WWE Legend Opines on Criticism for Goldberg's Swansong at Saturday Night's Main Event

Image via WWE Bill Goldberg and Gunther will battle it out at Saturday Night's Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta for the coveted World Heavyweight Championship in what is billed as Goldberg's last-ever WWE outing. However, there has been some opposition and criticism from the fanbase about a 58-year-old getting a title shot while the young crop work hard for their opportunities every week. Moreover, Goldberg has been out of his prime for quite some time now. He last competed in the WWE in 2022 at Elimination Chamber and has been involved in relatively shorter matches owing to his age. Joining the fan base was Bully Ray who recently questioned Goldberg getting an opportunity at this stage of his career. And it seems that the former WWE tag team legend has more to say just days out from the NBC special. Bully Ray Says WWE Is Looking to Bank on Goldberg's Starpower Bully Ray recently appeared on Busted Open Radio to discuss Goldberg's WWE return alongside many other topics. The former TNA Champion explained that the promotion is actually not looking to get an in-ring classic with the 58-year-old but is rather banking on his legendary status and the momentum that comes with it. Ray told his fellow host Dave LaGreca, 'I don't understand how you're not understanding why they would do it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Bill still has a name. Bill still looks great. They are not concerned about the match. That's why they are putting him in there with Gunther. They understand that a lot of — Bill's last five outings haven't been, you know, five-star bangers. That's not the point.' He added, 'The whole thing with Bill is the spectacle. The entrance. The show. What happens from bell to bell, they would do their absolute damnedest to keep the spotlight on what Bill does well, and what Gunther can get out of him." Ray's opinion makes perfect sense. Even in his heyday, Goldberg wasn't known to have in-ring spectacles but his presence and intensity had the power to sell out arenas and stadiums. His matches against Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW Heavyweight title were a massive success while his WWE outings against The Rock and Triple H were classics owing to Goldberg's enigmatic personality. And it is safe to say that the promotion is looking to make money that way. Moreover, the WWE legend has been putting in the work since January 2025 to be healthy come this Saturday in what could be his last WWE match.
