Alleged judicial interference being probed under OSA
PETALING JAYA : An ongoing police probe into allegations of judicial interference is being conducted under the Official Secrets Act, a high-ranking source has revealed.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said the police had completed their probe, but that the investigation papers were handed back to them.
'The Attorney-General's Chambers found the investigation incomplete and told the police to gather evidence and record statements,' the source said.
The source said that to date, the police had interviewed several people from a news portal, Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) members, and officers serving under several judges.
FMT reported last month that a senior judge had been summoned by JAC to answer claims of interference in the appointment of judges dating back to last year.
A source told FMT that there was a heated exchange at the JAC meeting, with the commission's members allegedly split into two camps: one camp siding with the judge and the other wanting to throw the book at him.
Subsequently, a subordinate of the judge in question filed a police report against a reporter from a news portal who had asked the judge to comment on the allegations of interference.
The officer said the report was filed to urge the authorities to investigate how such information was leaked.

PETALING JAYA : Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said today it had ordered hawkers in Desa Pandan to vacate a site in January, following a brief standoff between enforcement officers and a parang-wielding man yesterday. DBKL said it wanted the area on Jalan 2/76 cleared to carry out road works and upgrade facilities. In a statement, it said it had engaged and informed the stakeholders, including the hawkers and their associations, of its plans. The hawkers were officially told to vacate the site on Jan 15, it said, and a final notice was issued on July 4. 'Demolition work was to be carried out on July 15, but it was put on hold due to the commotion at the site,' it said. Police arrested a 43-year-old man after he brandished a parang at DBKL officers during an operation to demolish the illegal structures at Desa Pandan. The man is said to have confronted the officers at about 11.15am during the operation, which also involved the police, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, and Air Selangor. Wangsa Maju police chief Lazim Ismail had said the man shouted profanities at the officers before being calmed down by members of the public.

Defence in cop's murder trial gets 6 weeks to file new submissions

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The defence in the murder trial of senior police officer Nazri Abdul Razak, who is accused of killing 17-year-old Zaharif Affendi Zamrie two years ago, has been given a new date to file its submissions. Counsel M Athimulan told the Ipoh High Court that the defence needed to review its previous submissions to focus on another section under the Penal Code that the prosecution is focusing on, Bernama reported. 'Our submissions comprised both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more focused on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d). 'This creates a need to revise our submissions. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks,' he was quoted as saying. Section 300(c) states that culpable homicide is deemed murder if 'done with the intention of causing bodily injury' and if that injury could cause a person's death 'in the ordinary cause of nature'. Meanwhile, Section 300(d) states that it is murder if someone commits an act knowing that it is likely to cause death, even if there was no intention to kill. Judge GSP Bhupindar Singh gave the defence six weeks to file the new submissions, with the prosecution allocated four weeks after that to respond. He fixed Oct 1 and 2 for the full hearing of submissions. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Afzainizam Abdul Aziz and Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, while the accused was represented by lawyers Athimulan, Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman. Nazri is accused of causing the death of Zaharif, a student, at Jalan Taman Jati 1, near Meru, between 12.05pm and 12.40pm on Dec 15, 2023. The deputy superintendent from the Kedah police contingent headquarters was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison and at least 12 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.

Rulers weigh national security, vape ban and top judicial picks at latest conference
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — Issues concerning national security, judicial appointments, and the proposed ban on vape were among the key topics discussed at the 269th Conference of Rulers meeting held at Istana Negara today. The Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, in a statement, said the meeting was presided over by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. 'Today, the Conference received the latest briefings on national security from the Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, and on national defence from the Chief of Defence Forces, General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar,' he said. Syed Danial said that the meeting also deliberated on appointments of judges, including those to the Federal Court, Court of Appeal, and High Courts, as well as on appointments of the Chief Judges of Sabah and Sarawak High Courts, President of the Court of Appeal, and the Chief Justice of Malaysia. 'The Conference also took note of the proposal to impose a complete ban on the sale and use of vape or electronic cigarettes in the country. 'Also tabled at the meeting were legal opinions from the 126th and 127th Meetings of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) Muzakarah Committee, along with resolutions from the 2025 Special Meeting of the Muzakarah Committee,' he said.
