Five star performers for trainer Peter Easterby
A typical Easterby type in that he was precocious enough to be good on the Flat, finishing second in the 1976 Ebor, and hardy enough to be even better over jumps. Winner of the Arkle Trophy in 1978, he successfully stepped up in distance to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year. It was close between him and Tied Cottage at the final fence where the Irish horse fell, leaving Alverton to coast home in the snow and mud. He started favourite for the Grand National in the same year and was going easily when suffering a fatal fall Becher's Brook on the second circuit.
Goldhill
Easterby may be better known for training stayers and jumpers, but it was the sprinter Goldhill that first put him on the map. After winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1963, Goldhill would have gone there for the King's Stand Stakes in 1964 but the meeting was abandoned due to waterlogging. However, he put the record straight when taking the five-furlong feature in 1965. Coincidentally, Goldhill retired to stud and became a successful stallion, most notably siring dual Champion Hurdle winner Comedy Of Errors.
Little Owl
Little Owl led home a one-two for Easterby in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1981 when denying his stablemate Night Nurse. The trainer picked up Little Owl for 2,300 guineas and the sky appeared to be the limit when he captured the big prize at the tender age of seven on only his fifth start over fences. It was not to be, though, as he was badly hit by a virus and was never anywhere near his best form again.
Night Nurse
A good Flat career was expected from this son of Falcon, but though he won a Ripon maiden at the age of three, it was over jumps that he made his name, winning 32 of his 64 races over obstacles. He was 'all heart', according to Easterby, and was one of the star turns in a golden era. He won the Champion Hurdle in 1976 and 1977 and in the latter year dead-heated with Monksfield, giving him 6lb, at Aintree. He also gave his all over fences and recovered from a bad injury to go down by only a length and a half to Little Owl in the Gold Cup in 1981.
Sea Pigeon
Sea Pigeon had been a good horse on the Flat for Jeremy Tree and over hurdles when with Gordon Richards, but became a great one under Easterby's guidance from early 1977. His exploits under both codes are legendary and it was his burst of speed that stood him out from the rest. A dual Chester Cup hero and memorable winner of the Ebor, it was his four consecutive appearances in the Champion Hurdle that are perhaps most fondly remembered. Second in 1978 and 1979, he finally lifted the prize in 1980 and repeated the trick the following year at the age of 11 under a vintage John Francome ride.

A 3lb rise in the weights is more than fair and he can strike for Karl Burke with Christophe Soumillon doing the steering. Templegate's TV verdicts GOODWOOD 1.20 SING US A SONG can be forgiven one poor run at Royal Ascot where he was sleeping in the stalls. Ralph Beckett's Camelot colt is better judged on his blistering Sandown win that kicked off this season. He shapes like this trip will be ideal and has more to come off a fair mark. The yard has another chance with Cape Breton who won nicely from the front at Salisbury. This is tougher but there's more to come. Sudu deserves this hike in grade after winning by seven lengths at Epsom earlier this month. He's been hiked 11lb but has lots of talent. Omni Man was a solid fifth at Royal Ascot on a tough handicap debut. He likes this trip and Ryan Moore rides for Joseph O'Brien. They have every chance. Kurakka didn't enjoy dropping to 1m2f at Newmarket last time after a good Haydock win over this trip. 1.55 PICK up the Tab with Ralph Beckett's improver in the Oak Tree Stakes. She's been placed here and in this grade but was pulled up on firm at Royal Ascot and may prefer a mile. FORMAL 3 FORMAL wary. Epsom Listed winner in June but well held since at York. Yet to truly convince at this level but has potential if back on song. SAQQARA SANDS 3 SHIFTING Sands. Carlisle Listed win last time after good runs at Epsom and Newbury. Respected but likes soft. SILVER GHOST 2 GHOST her. Two good 7f handicap wins in spring and shaped okay in big Royal Ascot field. Likes this track, but others stronger on form. TABITI 5 BITI has bite. Lightly raced filly who took a step forward when third in Sandringham at Royal Ascot. She travels well and finishes strongly. Big potential improver with drop to 7f fine. 2.30 LADY IMAN looks much the best filly in this race and hopefully top Irish trainer Ger Lyons can land his first winner on British soil since way back in 2019. Ameeq got clattered by a rival jockey's whip when finishing strongly behind superstar Charles Darwin in the Norfolk Stakes last time. That was a smart performance he relishes this trip. A repeat of that would take him close. Sands Of Spain showed lots of zip when third in the Super Sprint at Newbury and still looked green so there should be more to come. Argentine Tango is proven at Listed level over 6f and could nick a place if the pace isn't too hot. 3.05 FIELD OF GOLD looks on a different level to his elders and can follow in his sire Kingman's hoofprints by winning the Sussex Stakes. We all know he should have won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket before he demolished his rivals in the Irish version before a bloodless success in the St James's Palace at Royal Ascot last time. There are no trip or ground worries and, while he hasn't tackled a tricky track like this before, there's no reason why he won't handle it. There are only two places thanks to the small field but I still fancy Docklands to make the frame. He survived his rider dropping the whip to take the Queen Anne ahead of Rosallion last time and there won't be a lot between them again. Rosallion already has a couple of Group 1s on his CV but it was a bit surprising that Docklands was able to hold off his challenge at Royal Ascot. Aidan O'Brien sends over his French 2,000 Guineas winner Henri Matisse who was a solid second to Field Of Gold in the St James's Palace without ever looking likely to win. He gets the three-year-old weight allowance off the older horses but needs a big step up to figure. Aussie raider Carl Spackler was a fair sixth in the Queen Anne and it will be a surprise if he turns that form around. 3.45 BINTJEDDAH finished like a train when second over a mile at Newmarket last time and this longer trip should be ideal. The handicapper has been fair with a 2lb rise and there's more to come for William Haggas. Quebella looks a threat having run well in a Listed contest here in June before going close in a decent handicap at Southwell. Her mark of 87 looks lenient and she's capable of figuring in this company. Model Yuko makes her handicap debut on the back of a bloodless maiden win at Wolverhampton. She looks all about stamina and should improve for this longer trip. Ashariba was just over a length off the pace at Newcastle latest and has solid turn form too. She's a contender in an open race along with Music Piece who travelled well over 1m4f at Ascot last time before his stamina gave way. Patrick Kielty's TV future confirmed after Cat Deeley split as bosses issue statement
Patrick Kielty's RTE bosses have confirmed the star's future on the channel after his surprise split from wife of 13 years, Cat Deeley. Patrick Kielty's television career remains on track despite his recent split from Cat Deeley, with Irish broadcaster RTE providing an update after the couple's unexpected announcement. RTE has confirmed that despite personal difficulties, Patrick will be back at the helm of The Late Late Show when it returns in September. It comes following the surprising news that Patrick and his wife Cat Deeley are separating after 13 years married. The pair, who live in London with their two young sons, James, eight, and Milo, five, have been based there while Patrick travelled back and forth to RTE for his presenting commitments. An RTE spokesperson has confirmed the comedian's continued involvement with the show, saying: "RTÉ looks forward to Patrick returning to the Late Late Show in September." According to the Mirror, Patrick had previously revealed a three-season agreement with the national broadcaster. The dad of two has also made it clear that he will personally handle all travel and accommodation costs related to his work on the programme. Patrick, who is set to receive €250,000 per season, further noted that he would get €20,000 for pre-show work and rehearsals. Prior to taking over as host of the Late Late Show, he expressed: "I'm pleased to finally be able to share that I've signed a three-season deal to host The Late Late Show beginning this September. "I'm being paid €250,000 per 30-show season. If additional shows are requested by RTÉ, they'll be paid on a pro-rata basis. "I'm also receiving a one-off payment of €20,000 to cover the pre-production and rehearsals from now to September. The contract allows me to submit flight and accommodation expenses, but I've waived this. "I've made it clear to RTE that I will be covering my own flights and accommodation costs. I've also asked RTÉ to carbon offset my flights. I genuinely hope this helps clarify things going forward. I can't wait to get started." The update on Patrick's career moves comes following his separation from Cat, with the couple issuing a joint statement. It said: "We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved." They emphasised their commitment to their children and requested privacy, noting, "We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment." Details regarding when the split occurred remain unclear, though the couple had been living apart due to work commitments. Patrick was tied up with a significant contract in Ireland, while Cat was needed in London for her role on This Morning. Cat last mentioned Patrick on her Instagram in October 2023, following their final public appearance together the previous month.
