Illegal electricity connections targeted in Mzingazi

The Citizen5 days ago
As part of Eskom's ongoing campaign to tackle illegal connections in several communities, a team visited Mzingazi this past week.
Eskom technicians inspected the electricity infrastructure and removed multiple illegal connections, as well as replaced faulty meters with smart prepaid meters.
'This initiative, in collaboration with local leadership, aims to curb illegal connections and zero buyers, while ensuring that all households are legally connected and empowered to buy electricity with ease,' reads the statement by Eskom.
'The Eskom team also assisted customers with challenges related to purchasing electricity and addressed all service-related queries on the ground.'
Last week's campaign mirrors a similar one conducted in the area in 2019 where Eskom uncovered more than 300 illegal electricity connections and 1 054 tampered meters.
Eskom audited more than 1 500 households in Mzingazi after an analysis revealed that the power utility is only receiving 2% of the potential revenue from the area.
Meanwhile, the power utility continues to plead with communities to safeguard the power system.
'Illegal connections and meter bypassing not only constitute theft, but also place immense strain on the network, often leading to transformer overloads, equipment damage, and in severe cases, explosions and extended outages,' continues the statement.
'Electricity should be purchased only through Eskom-accredited vendors, and users are encouraged to regularise their electricity usage.'

Murdered politician's uncle arrested

A suspect accused of killing the late uMngeni municipal councillor, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, was his uncle. Ndlovu was gunned down at his Masosheni home near Mpophomeni in December 2023. The uncle (56), who is an iNkosi, was arrested on Wednesday and appeared alongside a 34-year-old accomplice at the Howick Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The arrest by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team brings the total number of suspects to five. DA leader Francois Rodgers said the iNkosi was allegedly implicated in a separate case involving the murder of his cousin. The matter has been postponed to 8 August for a formal bail application. 'While the DA welcomes the progress in this case, we remain deeply disappointed by the delays in the arrests. The information that ultimately led to the arrests was already available to the authorities by the DA's independent legal team, yet it was disregarded,' said Rodgers. 'The disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has further weakened the State's ability to address politically motivated crimes. 'The presence of senior SAPS intelligence officials during court proceedings only deepens concerns about whether our intelligence structures are being used effectively and impartially in such politically sensitive matters.' Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi commended the SAPS on the arrest, saying it was a 'significant breakthrough'. Buthelezi commended the task team for their diligent work, which led to this significant breakthrough and the arrest of more suspects. Don't have the ZO app? Protesters blockade uMkhanyakude Municipality

'The IFP caucus unequivocally condemns this short-sighted behaviour by individuals who appear to treat the municipality as their fiefdom.' This was the statement made by IFP Whip in uMkhanyakude District Council, Cllr Sihle Ndlovu who claims individuals have blockaded the entrance to the uMkhanyakude District Municipality building. ALSO READ: uMkhanyakude District Municipality challenges Cogta intervention He says they are 'operating with impunity' by actively seeking to disrupt a legal and binding decision by the provincial government to intervene in the municipality. 'Our position, as clearly articulated during the special council meeting on 3 July, is that we fully support the Section 139(1)(b) intervention. We believe that any legal challenge to contest this lawful intervention constitutes a wasteful expenditure of taxpayers' money,' he said. He says the blockade aims to prevent Administrator, Bamba Ndwandwe, from starting his crucial work of turning the municipality. 'The Municipal Manager's failure to cooperate with the Administrator has directly resulted in the non-payment of July salaries' he said. Ndlovu called on the Municipal Manager to instruct security to open the municipal gates, granting employees and the public access to the offices. Last week, uMkhanyakude Council Speaker, Solomon Mkhombo, said they were challenging the intervention in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, believing the KZN Legislature has not acted fairly. The matter is scheduled to be heard on Friday. Credit and debt collection failures Ndlovu said they support the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Thulasizwe Buthelezi, for launching a forensic investigation into municipal matters. MEC Buthelezi said the Auditor-General (AG) of South Africa, Tsakani Maluleke, requested the intervention due to the 'municipality's inability to implement a credit and debt collection policy' for a number of years, or take appropriate actions to address this. Buthelezi said he was aware of the grave nature of the issues raised by the AG which were raised in the 23 July meeting. 'I hold the AG's office is in the highest regard, and am committed to acting in the interest of the residents of the uMkhanyakude District. These residents bear the brunt of failed service delivery due to a lack of governance, financial, and consequence management measures within the District. 'The AG has requested a formal report from the MEC by 15 August. I will abide by the AG's request and comply with the deadline given,' he said. Don't have the ZO app?
