Google's Discover page now summarizes news with AI
The AI summaries in Discover display overlapping icons in the top-left corner, indicating the number of cited stories. Tapping the icons reveals a 'More' sheet with all the contributing articles. Users get a quick three-line preview before needing to tap 'See more' to expand the summary. A prominent warning is displayed underneath the text disclosing that the summaries are generated with AI, 'which can make mistakes.'
This feature appears to have been in development for a while. Google bug hunter AndellDam found that trending cards with AI Overview-like summaries were being tested on Google Discover in June. A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that this is not a test, but a US launch on iOS and Android. Google told the publication that the feature will focus on trending lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment, and aims to make it easier for people to decide what pages they want to visit.
This is the latest of several AI features Google has been toying with that discourage users from clicking on web links, following AI Overviews, Audio Overviews, and AI Mode being tested in Search. This is cause for concern across the publishing industry, which has seen a dramatic fall in website traffic and referrals now that AI is pulling information out of articles and negating the need for readers to click through to original sources. That loss of traffic and revenue from Google Zero has already contributed to killing sites like AnandTech, Giant Freakin Robot, Laptop Mag, and Buzzfeed News — reducing the pool that Google can feed to its AI.

Poll: Which abandoned Android phone features do you miss the most?
Robert Triggs / Android Authority Our phones have undergone remarkable changes over the years of their existence. Android phones are unwarrantedly sleeker, significantly faster, have larger screens, and even feature cameras that, for most non-professionals, can replace a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. Yet, Android manufacturers have made some compromises to make the phone less bulky, increase internal space for more advanced components, or even just to save costs. Newer Android phones are deprived of some amazingly useful features, such as FM radio, notification LEDs, and the beloved headphone jack. Even though most hardcore Android fans have moved on, some of these features can still evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and are difficult to forget, especially if you banked on their utility and haven't found a perfect replacement. So, today we're asking you about features from old Android phones that you miss or still hope to return. Which forgotten Android feature do you still crave or want back? 0 votes 3.5mm headphone jack NaN % Removable battery NaN % Expadable storage NaN % IR blaster NaN % Notification light NaN % FM radio NaN % Any others (tell us in the comments below!) NaN % For me, the biggest letdown, as I believe might have been for many others, was the removal of a headphone jack. While I have (unwillingly) adjusted to Bluetooth headsets, I sometimes still crave the ease and flexibility of using wired headphones. Despite the lack of dependence on wires in Bluetooth headsets, I loathe the arduous process of keeping each headset charged (and as someone who reviews many of them, this is really exhausting!) or pairing it to the device I'm using at the moment. I have my gripes with the lack of a removable battery too. I doubt I would need to pull out a battery to recover an unresponsive phone, simply because there are far fewer instances. However, I despise taking the phone to a service center to replace the battery, which is pertinent in case of a faulty one. As someone who still has a Pixel 6a, I might have no choice but to do that to avoid becoming another victim of battery fire, and I really wish we still lived in simpler times of phones with removable batteries. What additional features do you think should also be on the list above? I wouldn't be surprised if your decisions for buying an Android device still revolve around having one or a few of the features from older Android phones. If that is so, tell us in the comments below. Follow

Google Assistant Is Basically on Life Support and Things Just Got Worse
Voice assistants are… not perfect. That's me being nice. But if I were to cease being nice, I'd probably say something more like 'voice assistants suck,' and I think most would agree I'd be justified in saying so. While no voice assistant really manages to escape that criticism, I usually opt for Google Assistant, which—in my experience—is the least sucky. Or it used to be, but after some recent hiccups, I may have to start rethinking that dishonorable distinction. Last week, Google Assistant users reported that the voice assistant was bordering on broken. Those complaints across Reddit and X were so loud, in fact, that Google itself decided to get out there and address them. Here's Google's Director of Product Management, Google Home & Nest, Anish Kattukaran, doing some damage control on X last week. Hey everyone, I want to acknowledge the recent feedback about Google Assistant reliability on our home devices. I sincerely apologize for what you're experiencing and feeling! — Anish Kattukaran (@AnishKattukaran) July 23, 2025Pretty bad, right? Well, unfortunately, those attempts at getting out ahead of problems appear mostly rhetorical, because things somehow have gotten worse, and now Google Home is at the center of what I would describe as a reputation shitstorm. According to way too many people on Reddit, Google Home is so broken that some people are actually unable to even turn their smart lights on and off properly. And it's not just lights; if Reddit complaints are anything to go off of, it looks like all kinds of smart devices are affected by problems with Google Home, including other speakers and even (disconcertingly) cameras and smart doorbells. While Google has apparently promised to fix the issues, it looks like, for lots of people, they've persisted. A quick scan of the Google Home subreddit reveals that connectivity issues and general issues are still pouring in, with no official announcement from Google. Mileage may vary, but if you're one of the many unlucky Google Home users having issues with third-party devices, you can pull open your Google Home app and navigate to the settings and see if the connecting app is still synced. To do that, go to Settings in the bottom-right corner, then tap 'Works with Google,' and a list of your synced apps should show up. If they're no longer synced, re-sync the app by finding it under 'Add new.' If they're still synced and not working, unsync the app by tapping on the icon and then tap 'Unlink account.' After that, you can try syncing once more and hope that it works. Obviously, having to do any of this is annoying for lots of reasons. For one, people use the Google Home app and smart products on a daily basis to do things like turn their freaking lights on and off. It's also frustrating from a more general standpoint, given Google Assistant's slow erosion over the past few years to the point where some of its core functions have basically broken. To me, this is the clearest indication that voice assistants are in a very bad place, and something needs to be done. That something, if Google, Apple, and Amazon have anything to do with it, will probably be a much-needed dose of AI chatbots like Gemini, but it remains to be seen whether an infusion of a large language model will be enough. The bittersweet news is that it looks like it can't possibly get any worse, though. On the bright side, Apple must feel pretty good about delaying its promised next-gen Siri. Better late than broken, I say.
