‘Sakshi Tanwar has enough money for six generations, Ronit Roy has villas and vacation homes': Ram Kapoor opens up about TV wealth

Indian Express26-06-2025
With popular television shows like Kasamh Se, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, and others, Ram Kapoor became a household name in India. In a recent interaction, he opened up about the remuneration television actors receive and how, if managed wisely, it can help them accumulate wealth for generations. He cited the examples of top TV actors like Ronit Roy and Sakshi Tanwar, highlighting how, thanks to their sensibile investments, they've made significant financial gains from television.
During an interaction with Humans of Bombay, Ram admitted that while many actors have maintained healthy bank balances, there were also some top actors in the industry who squandered their earnings and have since disappeared. 'When you make it to the top like Ronit Roy, Sakshi, and me, and you are sensible with your investments… there were a lot of people who had hit shows, but they spent more money than they should, and when that show shut down and they didn't get another show. They did not do well and disappeared,' he said.
Lauding Ronit for his sharp financial acumen and smart investment decisions, he shared, 'People like a Ronit… he has a lot of houses, vacation homes, and such a fantastic villa in Goa. He has been sensible because he started in films and he didn't make it in films. He was a flop actor in films and he didn't have money to eat. Then Ektaa Kapoor took him on. In television, he never looked back. He had seen failure so when he got success, he respected it from day one.'
Like Ronit, Ram praised his Bade Achhe Lagte Hain co-star Sakshi Tanwar and added, 'Same for Sakshi. She is a very sensible girl. She doesn't like fancy cars like I do. She has enough money for six generations because she spends it very wisely. If you spend money wisely, then you will have money for a lot of things in television.'
While Ronit made a name with hit shows like Kasautii Zindagi Kay, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Sakshi is known for her lead role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. In the same interview, he said that he has made enough money for multiple future generations of his family, and that he would earn eight years' worth of a regular person's salary in just one month on TV.

Amar Upadhyay on Kyunki...craze: Mobbed at Taj Mahal, got marriage proposals

If you grew up in the early 2000s, you would know the craze behind Tulsi and Mihir from 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. Played by Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay, the couple and their story were watched in every household every night. As the show is set to return with a second season, Amar, in an exclusive conversation with India Today, spoke about how the show's popularity changed his life show made him one of the most loved actors when it was launched. While it started with him being recognised in his building and then the city, it was a trip to the Taj Mahal that made him truly witness the success of his show and understand the popularity he had Upadhyay shared that months after 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' went on air, he decided to visit the Taj Mahal with his family and newborn daughter. As luck would have it, the actor reached the historical monument on a Friday, when there was free entry, leading to a larger crowd. "There were thousands and lakhs of people that day. I realised I made a mistake by coming on that day. It was complete chaos, but we were trying to move in when suddenly someone recognised me and shouted, 'This guy is Mihir!'. His words spread like wildfire, and before I realised, people were jumping on me. My T-shirt got absolutely torn, and we had to rush back. My family was thrown on one side, and I was on the other. We never got to see the Taj," he remarked with a added that the police and security soon arrived, but before taking on the crowd, they pulled him up for being in a public place without caution. He said, "They upfront told me, 'Why the hell would you come here on a free day?' I tried to explain that I didn't have any idea, but they were angry that I casually just walked in. In half an hour, I was cordoned off back to Delhi."The actor further spoke about how his character's death on the show went on to become a national crisis. The above-mentioned incident that happened in Agra made him realise how popular the show and it's characters had shared that while he was staying at a friend's house, people in the colony would often come to meet him, addressing him as 'Mihir'. There would be people who would watch the episode and immediately come to meet him, and have long discussions. "It was unreal, and what happened at the Taj Mahal, that madness, it finally hit me how our show had become immensely popular."The actor recalled another amusing anecdote that he still cherishes. While the term 'national crush' is loosely used today, the actor was definitely worthy of the title then. He revealed how women would come home to meet him and would sneakily try to pitch their daughters' marriage Upadhyay shared, "A lot of women, especially from Delhi, would come with their daughters to meet me. I would happily chat with them, click pictures, or give autographs. There were many times when they would ask me about my personal life, and as soon as I told them I was married and had a daughter, they would abruptly leave. That's when my aunt explained that they were here for proposals, and wanted me to meet their daughters. I was shocked that this could happen, and also embarrassed. But it was all Mihir; that was how much he was loved. That was the power of primetime TV back then, Mihir wasn't just a character; he was family."Given the show's popularity even 25 years later, the makers have planned to soon come up with the second part. The reboot version of 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' will star Amar Upadhyay and Smriti Irani in the lead roles, with other cast members also coming back.- EndsMust Watch

For Smriti Irani, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Is ‘A Shared Memory'

Last Updated: Smriti Irani, who became a household name as Tulsi Virani, shared, 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn't just a show, it's a shared memory." Some stories feel so personal, they reflect our own lives like a mirror. Exactly 25 years ago, Indian television experienced a turning point. On July 3, 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi premiered, not just launching a mega-hit serial but sparking a cultural phenomenon that would shape generations to come. Even after going off-air in 2008, the Ektaa Kapoor-produced show remains a household name and was remembered for its gripping drama, emotional arcs, and, of course, the unforgettable characters of Tulsi and Mihir. Starring Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay in the lead roles, the show not only ruled the TRP charts for years but also became a daily ritual for millions of Indian families. As the show completes 25 glorious years, the buzz surrounding its potential return is already thrilling fans. And on this milestone, producer Ektaa Kapoor and lead stars Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay have come forward to reflect on the legacy that continues to shape Indian television. In a heartfelt conversation with The Times of India, Smriti Irani, who became a household name as Tulsi Virani, shared, 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi isn't just a show — it's a shared memory. For those who created it and the millions who embraced it, it was a story of families, faith and the fabric that binds us across generations. Twenty-five years later, it still lives in our hearts. My gratitude to those who made the journey possible." Producer Ekta Kapoor, who created a revolution in Indian soap operas with the show, recalled, 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi still lives in every beat of my heart. When we started, we never imagined Tulsi would become a family to millions. Even today, people remember the title track, the tears and the emotion it sparked. This milestone belongs to every writer, actor, crew member, and most of all, every viewer who made it a part of their lives. We didn't just make a show, we created a bond that still feels like a home." Amar Upadhyay, who played the iconic role of Mihir Virani, spoke with equal emotion: 'Twenty-five years ago, we began a journey that was more than just a show-it was a mirror to a million households, a reflection of traditions, love, trials and the changing face of Indian families. Being part of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi wasn't just a role, it was a responsibility, a privilege and a turning point not just for me but for everyone who lived and breathed this world with us." He added, 'Even today, when someone calls me 'Mihir,' there's a warmth and familiarity in it– like a long-lost family member greeting you after years. That's the kind of love you can't manufacture; it can only be lived." The actor also shared a candid moment from their recent reunion that hints at the unchanged chemistry between the cast. Amar recalled with a smile, 'Smriti hasn't changed a bit. She looked at me and said, 'Tu buddha kab hoga?'" And this is a hint that the offscreen camaraderie between them is still the same, and that's what will make their return even stronger. Addressing the growing excitement around the show's grand comeback, he shared, 'The love story between Tulsi and Mihir has only deepened. Our characters have evolved, and so have we."
