The impact varies by company and sector.The metal stocks have already seen a rally and if you look at the numbers, the volumes in all the metal stocks have not been that encouraging for most of the companies. The margins have been there mainly because raw material prices have been benign. So, it is not the product pricing, but it is the raw material gains which have given them incremental profits and that is very well reflected in the stock prices because the stock prices have moved up by anywhere between 20% to 30% in the past two-three months.Now, incrementally, the volume growth has to pick up. Safeguard duty is responsible for giving some hopes that the prices will be sustained and the profitability will remain healthy. If the profitability remains healthy, we will not see any big cut happening in the stock prices of all the metal companies. But incrementally, from here on, the returns should be more moderate than what we have seen particularly in the last month or two.We have to look at this on a case-to-case basis because many of these companies or MNCs today are holding stocks not because they had come in very willingly or something, but because the government regulations at that point of time permitted them to hold. Today, in many of these large MNCs, the kind of valuations which are there in India whether you look at say some of these durable companies like LG Electronics or even Hindustan Unilever or others, the market cap seems to be disproportionately higher in terms of valuations because the Indian companies trade at a significant premium to where their MNC parents are trading today at. That is prompting some of these MNC parents to dilute some holding over there and reallocate their resources elsewhere globally where they see more growth or do some buybacks and things like that.Now, as far as growth is concerned, it depends upon how much commitment is there. For example, if there is some MNC parent which reduces a stake to say 15%, 20%, then they are gradually losing interest in that particular company and it also depends on the business of the company that how much that business is technologically or otherwise dependent upon the MNC parent. In many of the sectors where the companies need to get a continuous flow of technology from the parent, reduction of the stake below say a level of 51% in certain cases, I think that I would see that as negative.Now some of the companies which you showed in the chart, particularly some of these MNCs which are in the capital goods sectors like your ABB Siemens and many of these names, there the stakes are anywhere between say 51% to 75%, a couple of them I think maybe GE Vernova has also cut down stake below 51, although the company is growing well.But technically speaking, any company reducing the stake below 51% is not a very welcome signal because then you are not the majority holder of that company and in the longer term where your strategies are going to be, slightly difficult to say and that is how I would read and rest it all depends upon how much and what type of company it is, what type of technology transfer happens and how critical are the operations of the domestic entity for its parent.

New Delhi: A small group of Indian trade negotiators has landed in Washington this week. Their task is urgent. They must try, once again, to untangle the long-pending India-U.S. trade deal that has seen too many rounds, too many delays and now stares down a hard deadline, August 1. The clock is ticking. U.S. President Donald Trump, now in his second term at the White House, has already fired off tariff letters to a long list of countries. Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Thailand and Cambodia, each has received a note – explaining in clear terms why new tariffs are coming. India has not received one. That is only because New Delhi and Washington are still talking. But if there is no deal before the deadline, the letter could arrive. Where Are The Talks Stuck? Washington wants India to lower its tariffs on American agricultural and dairy goods. Milk, wheat, poultry and genetically modified soy, all are on the table. New Delhi, however, is not moving. India's position has been clear. Its farm sector, dairy cooperatives, food security architecture, they cannot take a hit. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has said any agreement must benefit both sides. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has echoed that line. No pressure. No compromise on farmers. No backdoor trade-offs. So far, India has kept these sectors out of most trade deals, including with the United Kingdom and Australia. The same applies here. Indian Team Lands in Washington Led by Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, the Indian delegation is back in the U.S. capital, hoping to break the deadlock. The goal is to find a formula, something that can be signed off before Trump's August 1 deadline kicks in and the United States begins slapping tariffs across the board. Goyal says talks are moving 'at speed'. Speaking to reporters, he confirmed that the Indian side is focused on crafting an agreement that works for both countries. There is still time. Barely two weeks. But the message is that the window will not stay open for long. Trump's Tariff Playbook Trump is playing hardball again. Twenty-five countries have already been hit with his new tariff regime. Canada was slapped with 35 percent. Others have seen higher. But in India's case, the U.S. president has dropped a telling hint. While speaking about his global tariff strategy, he said that 'key trading partners' may see lower tariffs, around 15 to 20 percent. And not every country will get a formal letter. It is a signal that if India clinches the deal, it may escape the harshest penalties. Why India Won't Budge On Dairy & Agriculture Behind India's tough stance lies a deeper concern. According to a recent report from the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), any wide-scale entry of subsidised U.S. dairy or poultry goods could damage India's rural economy. Not only small farmers but food security itself could be hit. The report warns against opening the gates to American grain or genetically modified soybeans. Once these products enter Indian markets, they could displace local produce and crush pricing structures. This is not only about trade margins, this is about the long-term sustainability of Indian agriculture. Can A Deal Still Happen? If all goes well in Washington, negotiators may stitch together a limited package. It will not be a full-blown foreign trade agreement (FTA). But it could be enough to avoid Trump's tariff stick. Enough to show progress. Enough to keep the trade lanes open. A senior official said that a breakthrough is still possible before August 1. But it depends on what each side is willing to give, and what each insists on keeping off the table. Until then, all eyes remain on the U.S. capital.

Taxing time awaits Pune tipplers as permit rooms & bars plan to up menu prices
Pune: Hard times await tipplers with owners of bars and permit rooms in the city making it clear that if state govt does not reverse its nod to revise the excise tax and liquor licence fees, they would pass on the financial burden to their customers. The price of a quarter bottle (180ml) of regular alcohol, currently available for Rs150, is likely to go up byRs90-100 with the state cabinet recently approving a revision in excise taxes. Similarly, liquor prices in permit rooms or bars are expected to rise proportionately, taking into account the increased taxes. "It will, however, not be a standard increase. Different brands will have different price increases," said Sudhakar Shetty, president of Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association. "For premium brands, we estimate a 15-20% increase. For Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and mass brands, the rise could be in the 60-70% bracket," he said. If the industry is to survive, owners are demanding a rollback of VAT, a phased increase in excise duty, and a limited increase in licence fees. Girish Poojari, owner of a restaurant and bar in Kharadi, said: "If a quarter bottle of regular alcohol costs us between Rs150 and Rs300, no one will be willing to pay Rs400-500. Many licences will be surrendered. We will also keep an eye on our business for 1-2 months and do a calculation to see if business is feasible. " Menu prices were likely to go up by at least 15%, said Saili Jahagirdar, owner of a bistro in Kothrud. "If licence fees are reduced, many restaurants can afford alcohol licences. This will also increase state revenues," she said. For smaller permit rooms and bars, the increase in prices will drive away 30-40% of the customers, the operators fear. "We have two options — either to increase the seating capacity or surrender the licence. With high licence fees and taxes, customers will not be able to afford liquor. Rentals, salary costs and overheads are difficult to manage if inflows are less," said an owner of a 150-seater permit room in Dhankawadi. Vishwanath Poojari, who runs a resto bar in Katraj, said, "About 30% of my customers will go to shops if prices are increased substantially. We are waiting for all the brands to finalise price increases before we increase the menu prices." All this could have a cascading impact on employment as many owners said they would be forced to reduce staff strength to manage costs. Ajinkya Udane, co-chapter head, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), said: "It (the rise in excise taxes and licence fees) will destroy small permit rooms and bars. At the end of the day, they also have to sustain and do business. Even a small permit room bar will have 15-20 employees." Rajesh Nadkarni, a resident of Karvenagar, said: "We may have to reduce our outings if alcohol prices increase so much. It is cheaper to buy directly from a store as the effective price increase would be less."
