Rory McIlroy's roller-coaster Open continues into second round at Royal Portrush

The Northern Irishman, from an hour down the road in Holywood, began the day three off the lead on one under but had to work hard just to maintain that score through his front nine.
But by the time he turned in a level-par 36 – after two birdies and two bogeys – the gap to the top had stretched to five as 2023 champion Brian Harman had taken advantage of good scoring conditions to reach six under.

McIlroy, last in the field for driving accuracy on Thursday after hitting just two fairways, struggled to recalibrate his radar but that did not prevent him making birdie at the first from 18 feet from the semi-rough.
However, he was a foot from driving out of bounds at the par-five next and had to take an unplayable lie and eventually chipped to seven feet to save par.
The 176-yard third caused him problems as his tee shot caught the bank of a bunker, forcing him to stand in the sand and choke down halfway on the shaft of his wedge with his ball well above him and that resulted in a bogey.
A 348-yard drive and approach to six feet brought a birdie at the next but the driveable par-four fifth caused him problems after pulling his three-wood into a bunker, which produced the response 'Don't go in there. Idiot.'
Another bogey followed and despite hammering a 372-yard drive down the par-five seventh he came up short with his approach, chipped to nine feet but missed the birdie attempt.
He missed fairways at eight and nine, meaning he found only one over his outward half, and it cost him scoring opportunities.

That was not the case for Harman, beginning the day two under, who had three birdies in 10 holes, to hold a one-shot lead over Rasmus Hojgaard and England's Tyrrell Hatton, who could consider himself unfortunate to only be two under through 10 holes of his round.
His Ryder Cup team-mates Robert MacIntyre and Justin Rose were in the pack on three under; the Scot bogey-free in carding three birdies on his front nine and Englishman Rose, runner up at the Masters and last year's Open, dropping his first shot of the tournament at the par-three sixth in an outward one-under 35.

Ex-Celtic and Hibs star ‘attracts interest from Sassuolo' as Serie A side eye move for another Scot to join Josh Doig

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SASSUOLO are reportedly lining up a move to bring another Scottish player to Emilia-Romagna. The newly-promoted Serie A side already have Josh Doig in their ranks, who played a key role in their Serie B title-winning campaign last season. The former Hibs youngster has since been linked with the likes of Juventus following his standout campaign in Serie B. But should the left-back remain at Sassuolo for their Serie A push then he could link up with another player who once starred for the Easter Road club - and Celtic. According to reports in Italy, Scottish midfielder Liam Henderson is being targeted by the Serie B champions on a free transfer. The 29-year-old was the one who started the trend of Scottish players heading to Italy when he left Glasgow to seal a move to Bari in 2018. He was the first Scot to play in Serie A in over 30 years and since then, he has watched the likes of Aaron Hickey, Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour, Lewis Ferguson, Doig and others follow in his footsteps. Since the midfielder's move to Bari, he has played for FOUR other Italian outfits - starring for Hellas Verona, Lecce, Palermo and most recently Empoli. He's now on the hunt for his next team after running down his contract at Empoli. And Tutto Mercato suggest he could make it FIVE Italian clubs in his career as Sassuolo are said to be looking at the Scottish blueprint once again. But he could also return to one of his former teams as his first Italian club Bari are also named as suitors. Edouard to return and Schmeichel's last year at Celtic Plus Munteanu LATEST Henderson has plenty of Serie A experience having made over 100 appearances in the top flight to date. Doig has so far followed a similar path to his fellow countryman in football as the left-back also enjoyed a stint at Hellas Verona before he moved to Sassuolo. Henderson spent two years with the club between 2018 and 2020 and helped them earn promotion to the Serie A via the Serie B play-offs in his first campaign at the club. Tom McKibbin vents his frustration after missing first Major cut of his career

'Not great. A little bit annoyed. Yeah, a little bit p****d off,' he opined bluntly after firing a two-over second-round 73 to finish the week at three-over-par, two shots too many for the cut line. You could hardly blame him, given he started the day so positively with a birdie at the first, but a double-bogey at the eighth after finding trouble over the green and two more bogeys at the par-fours 11 and 14 were enough to do the damage. He reinvigorated his hopes of making the weekend with a birdie at the 15th to get back to three-over, with the cut at that point threatening to move to two-over, but three pars to finish just wasn't good enough. 'The whole week was good, sort of positive,' he continued. 'I thought I played all right, just a few sort of stupid mistakes that, looking back, I wouldn't really hit different. 'The shot was fine, just sort of missed in the wrong spot or got the club slightly wrong. 'Overall, I actually thought I played quite nicely, just a few silly mistakes.' The Open at Royal Portrush: What happened in 2019 It is another crucial bit of Major experience for the 22-year-old, who has four more events on the LIV Tour to play in before he finishes his season with some DP World Tour invites, even if this was the first he has played where it only lasted for two rounds. He will take plenty of confidence from a strong showing on the greens, where he ranked fourth in strokes gained putting, and how he battled through some punishing weather but, ultimately, it wasn't enough to get him in for the weekend. 'I think that's what's probably most annoying. This is probably the best I've played out of them all,' McKibbin fumed. 'Just so many like stupid errors, just pins at the back of the green, hitting over the green. It's just where there's nothing really wrong with the shot. So, I think that's what's a little bit frustrating.' Meanwhile, if this was Darren Clarke's final appearance at a Major, then it was a great one to go out on, and he gave himself a chance of making the cut even if he did end up missing the number by a considerable distance. The 56-year-old looked visibly emotional as he walked up towards the 18th grandstand to round out a second consecutive three-over 74 to end the week at six-over, but he will not forget holing a 56-footer for birdie on the 10th that fostered hope that he might do something special. In the end, though, five bogeys sunk him, including at the 13th and 18th after the birdie at 10, and it's a missed cut for the Dungannon man. Time will tell, but it could very well be his last in this hallowed event.
