Residents living close to the station and the newly painted lines were critical about the level of traffic in the town.Jason Russell, 36, said his property had been affected by passengers parking outside and claimed warning notices were often "ignored".He added: "They (whoever has painted the lines) have obviously tried to replicate real lines but people don't take notice of signs, so they won't take notice of a few squiggles."It's a nice idea but it won't work."Other people called for the station car park to be expanded to stop vehicles from being parked on neighbouring streets.David Roberts, 65, said the lines showed the level of frustration felt by many in the town."People get territorial about things. It's imaginative, creative, I can't condone it but I understand why they've done it. They're obviously sick of people parking there," he added.But Mark Langton, 58, said he was concerned about the impact the lines would have on safety, adding: "You can't take it on yourself. If it causes an accident, who is responsible?"The BBC has contacted Transpennine Express, the operator of Brough Station, for comment about the parking situation.

New safety officers to start evening patrols in York
A new scheme to keep people enjoying nights out in York safe is launching this Night Safe Officer programme, run by the city's Business Improvement District (BID), will start on Friday and run until early January, every Friday and Saturday night from 20:00 to 02:00 officers wearing hi-vis jackets will patrol the streets during those times with the aim of tackling anti-social behaviour and keeping noise levels manager Carl Alsop said the officers will be there to support emergency services with any potential incidents that could occur in the evenings, or to provide support for people visiting bars and clubs. Riley Roberts, the 35-year-old web developer fiancé of AOC, was seen Tuesday morning guiding security personnel around as they cased out the building for any vulnerable areas, exclusive photos show. The 35-year-old congresswoman has received multiple death threats in recent days according to AOC's campaign manager, and her team have called in security to beef up safety measures, a staffer revealed. Roberts was walking the couple's French Bulldog, Deco, while he was engaged in a serious conversation with a black-clad guard near their newly built Queens apartment complex. The visibly coordinated security check by AOC's red-haired fiancé came just hours after her Bronx campaign headquarters was defaced with red paint in a disturbing act of vandalism by pro-Palestinian activists. Roberts, in a baseball cap and dark glasses, was seen talking to the security man and gesturing to the couple's apartment, where they have lived since 2022. A chilling video spread online on Monday showing the congresswoman's Bronx offices splattered with 'fake blood' and a note attached to the front gate reading 'AOC Funds Genocide in Gaza.' The viral footage of the incident showed NYPD forensic officers investigating the scene and collecting evidence. An outfit named the Boogie Down Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the attack on her HQ, saying 'the Bronx is sick and tired of people like AOC and Ritchie Torres using us as a stepping stone for their own political careers'. In a statement, the group went on: 'The Bronx stands with the people of Palestine, and we denounce the hypocrisy of AOC who voted to fund Israel's ongoing genocide and starvation campaign in Gaza. The disturbing attack came after AOC voted against an amendment proposed by MAGA republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to slash funding to Israel's Iron Dome air defense systems by $500million. AOC, a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza, was criticized by some of her fellow progressive for her stance on the defense spending bill. But she hit back in a series of social media posts. During the weekend, she posted on X: 'Marjorie Taylor Greene's amendment does nothing to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza. 'Of course I voted against it. 'What it does do is cut off defensive Iron Dome capacities while allowing the actual bombs killing Palestinians to continue. 'I have long stated that I do not believe that adding to the death count of innocent victims to this war is constructive to its end. 'That is a simple and clear difference of opinion that has long been established. 'I remain focused on cutting the flow of US munitions that are being used to perpetuate the genocide in Gaza.' In another X post addressing the criticism on Monday, she included screenshots of her voting against the spending bill, adding: 'If you're saying I voted for military funding, you are lying. Comply with child age checks or face consequences, Ofcom tells tech firms
Tech firms have been warned to act now or face the consequences, as new online safety protections for children come into force. From Friday, so-called 'risky' sites and apps will be expected to use what the regulator has described as 'highly effective' age checks to identify which users are children and subsequently prevent them from accessing pornography, as well as other harmful content including self-harm, suicide, eating disorders and extreme violence. But some online safety campaigners said while the new measures should have been a 'watershed moment for young people', regulator Ofcom has instead 'let down' parents, accusing it of choosing to 'prioritise the business needs of big tech over children's safety'. The Molly Rose Foundation, founded by bereaved father Ian Russell after his 14-year-old daughter Molly took her own life having viewed harmful content on social media, said the changes lack ambition and accountability and warned that big tech will have taken note. In the face of campaigners' criticism, Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes has previously defended the reforms, insisting that tech firms are not being given much power over the new measures, which are coming into effect as part of the Online Safety Act. The changes include age checks on pornography websites, as well as others such as dating app Grindr, which Ofcom said will ensure it is more difficult for children in the UK to access online porn than in many other countries. The regulator said sites such as X, formerly Twitter, and others including Bluesky and Reddit have also committed to age assurances. Ofcom said its safety codes also demand that algorithms 'must be tamed and configured for children so that the most harmful material is blocked'. It said it has launched a monitoring and impact programme focused on some of the platforms where children spend most time including social media sites Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, gaming site Roblox and video clip website YouTube. The sites are among those which have been asked to submit, by August 7, a review of their efforts to assess risks to children and, by September 30, scrutiny of the practical actions they are taking to keep children safe. Actions which could be taken against firms which fail to comply with the new codes include fines of up to £18 million or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater, and court orders potentially blocking access in the UK. Dame Melanie said: 'Prioritising clicks and engagement over children's online safety will no longer be tolerated in the UK. 'Our message to tech firms is clear – comply with age checks and other protection measures set out in our codes, or face the consequences of enforcement action from Ofcom.' But Andy Burrows, chief executive of the Molly Rose Foundation, said: 'This should be a watershed moment for young people but instead we've been let down by a regulator that has chosen to prioritise the business needs of big tech over children's safety.' He said the 'lack of ambition and accountability will have been heard loud and clear in Silicon Valley'. He added: 'We now need a clear reset and leadership from the Prime Minister. That means nothing less than a new Online Safety Act that fixes this broken regime and firmly puts the balance back in favour of children.'
