Alibaba DAMO Academy collaborates with United Nations and hospitals to advance AI for good initiatives
Announced at the AI for Good Global Summit 2025, this collaboration will facilitate expert exchanges and knowledge-sharing mechanisms between the two organizations. It will also support initiatives of AI for Health, AI for Climate, and AI for Science through a series of joint activities, including online lectures and offline events. Additionally, both parties plan to explore cooperation in robotics and embodied intelligence, while deepening their work in AI and video technologies, contributing to global technological development, solution deployment, and standardization.
As part of its broader commitment to advancing AI capacity building, Alibaba DAMO Academy has also joined the AI Skills Coalition, a global, open, trusted, and inclusive platform led by the United Nations. As a founding member, Alibaba DAMO Academy will support the Coalition's mission to empower governments, businesses, and organizations—particularly those in less developed countries—to harness AI for sustainable development and good governance.
Advancing AI for Health in Singapore and Saudi Arabia
To advance AI for Health initiatives globally, Alibaba DAMO Academy has also announced a collaboration with NHG Health in Singapore to drive innovation in AI-powered medical research and clinical applications at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), one of the country's largest multi-disciplinary hospitals.
This partnership leverages the combined expertise of both organizations in medical AI technology and scientific research. The focus is on enhancing early screening for conditions such as pancreatic cancer, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, breast cancer, and kidney masses. Through joint research, development, and external validation, the collaboration aims to expand access to AI-driven early detection tools, ultimately supporting the advancement of precision medicine and enabling more timely and effective treatments.
Additionally, Alibaba DAMO Academy will collaborate with Abdul Latif Jameel Health, the health division of the Saudi Arabia-based multinational enterprise Abdul Latif Jameel Group, to explore opportunities in AI-assisted diagnosis for cancers such as pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancer, chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and fatty liver disease, as well as acute conditions including acute aortic syndromes and pulmonary embolism.
This collaboration seeks to extend the benefits of medical AI to more people and regions by combining Alibaba DAMO Academy's cutting-edge technology products with Abdul Latif Jameel Health's extensive global network.
Recognition of DAMO Academy's Innovation in AI for Good
Alibaba DAMO Academy's technological innovations have been acknowledged in the United Nation's AI for Good Innovate for Impact Interim Report 2025.
Among its frontier AI solutions is Baguan AI Weather Forecasting , which generates specialized weather indicators for applications in power energy, agricultural meteorology, low-altitude weather forecasting, and regional renewable energy planning.
Another notable achievement is the DAMO PANDA system (Pancreatic Cancer Detection with Artificial Intelligence), which uses deep learning to detect and classify pancreatic lesions with high accuracy using non-contrast CT scans. Recently, it developed DAMO GRAPE (Gastric Cancer Risk Assessment Procedure with Artificial Intelligence), a deep-learning framework that analyzes 3D non-contrast CT scans to detect and segment gastric cancer with high sensitivity and specificity. These innovations exemplify Alibaba DAMO Academy's commitment to leveraging AI for societal benefit and advancing the frontiers of science and healthcare globally.

Dewa and Shell explore ways to advance clean energy drive
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD&CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), welcomed a high-level delegation from Shell, led by Fakher Bader, Country Chair for Iraq and the UAE. The delegation included Geraldine Wessing, Chief Political Analyst – Strategy Insights & Scenarios; and Hessa Abdulla, MENA Media Lead. The meeting centered on Shell's latest report, The 2025 Energy Security Scenarios: Energy and Artificial Intelligence, which explores how AI could reshape global energy systems through three distinct pathways: Archipelagos, Horizon, and Surge. These scenarios are vital tools for strategic decision-making, helping stakeholders anticipate future challenges, assess risks, and identify opportunities in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. Discussions also highlighted opportunities for synergy in advancing a circular and green economy. Al Tayer shared Dewa's pioneering projects in clean energy, particularly the ongoing development of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's largest single-site solar park based on the independent power producer (IPP) model. Its current capacity is 3,860 megawatts (MW), with a planned capacity of 7,260MW by 2030 (the original plan was 5,000 megawatts). The 1,800MW sixth phase of the solar park uses the latest bifacial solar photovoltaic technologies with single-axis tracking. This phase, developed under the IPP model, will provide clean energy for approximately 540,000 residences and reduce around 2.36 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Al Tayer also highlighted the Al Shera'a building, Dewa's new headquarters, which will be the tallest and largest net-positive energy government building in the world. Al Shera'a is designed to achieve platinum certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and silver certification in the WELL Building Standard. The building will leverage advanced technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics and AI, alongside modern renewable energy solutions that ensure outstanding efficiency. He also underlined Dewa's remarkable achievements in adopting AI technologies. Dewa has launched a strategic roadmap to become the world's first AI-native utility, integrating artificial intelligence across all core operations. This supports Dewa's global leadership, ranking first worldwide in 12 key performance indicators in its areas of work. In 2024, Dewa recorded the world's lowest electricity transmission and distribution network losses at 2%, compared to 6% to 7% in Europe and the USA. Water transmission and distribution losses were also the lowest globally, at 4.5%. Additionally, Dewa set a world record for the lowest customer minutes lost (CML), achieving 0.94 minutes per year, compared to an average of 15 minutes in the European Union. Fakher Bader affirmed Shell's commitment to supporting the UAE's clean energy transition. Separately, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer received recently the certificate for the Energy Infrastructure Award, which Dewa won at the prestigious 2024 S&P Global Platts Energy Awards for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. Outperforming 1,000 leading companies that applied for this global honour, Dewa is the first utility in the Middle East and North Africa to receive this award. QIB expands its mobile app features to enhance customer experience
Doha, Qatar – Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Qatar's leading digital bank, has introduced a series of new features to its award-winning Mobile App and the QIB Lite App, further strengthening its digital offering and enhancing access to essential financial services for all customers. QIB has enhanced its Instant Credit Card feature by extending it to all eligible customers without requiring a salary transfer to QIB. The feature enables non-salaried customers to instantly apply for and receive a Credit Card via the QIB Mobile App, backed by a lien—a temporary hold—on a deposit or account balance. This update simplifies access to credit and offers customers greater flexibility and control over their finances. Additionally, QIB has expanded its Instant Cash Pickup service to include Pakistan through direct API integration with Habib Bank Limited (HBL) via both QIB Mobile App and QIB Lite App. The Cash Pickup service enables QIB customers to send money securely to beneficiaries in Pakistan, who can collect the cash instantly from any participating HBL branch. The new corridor builds on the existing Cash Pickup network covering Jordan, Egypt, and the Philippines, offering valuable remittance options to Qatar's expatriate communities. Among the newly introduced services, the Salary Advance feature is now available for eligible low-income earners (WPS) through the QIB Mobile App as well. Customers can instantly access up to 80% of their net salary in just a few steps. The service offers a one-time settlement in the following month and a fixed monthly profit rate of only 1%, making it a simple, fast, and affordable solution for customers needing short-term liquidity. The service is now available on both QIB Mobile App and QIB Lite App. Commenting on the launch, Mr. D.
