Scottie Scheffler defends at the Memorial, first to do so since Tiger
Trevor Immelman tagged Scottie Scheffler with a new nickname.
'We might have to start calling him The Closer,' CBS's Immelman remarked on the network's broadcast of the Memorial.
Later, his CBS colleague Ian Baker-Finch compared Scheffler to the Hall of Fame closer for the New York Yankees.
'He never loses,' he said.
On Sunday, Scheffler converted his ninth straight 54-hole lead since the 2023 WM Phoenix Open. This time the world No. 1 shot 2-under 70 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, to win the 2025 Memorial Tournament by four strokes over Ben Griffin. Scheffler, who signed for a 72-hole total of 10-under 278, became the first golfer to win consecutive Memorial Tournament titles since Tiger Woods pulled off the three-peat from 1999-2001. It also marked Scheffler's third PGA Tour title in his last four starts and sweet No. 16 for his career.
Scheffler paced himself with a pair of 70s in the first two rounds before making his move with four birdies in his final five holes on Saturday. It added up to 68 and his first bogey-free round at Muirfield Village in 19 career rounds to assume the 54-hole lead by one stroke over Griffin.
'Obviously, Scottie Scheffler's the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat,' Griffin said before the final round.
Not this time. Scheffler was shaky early, missing the first four greens, but his short game kept bailing him out. Griffin's three-putt bogey at the fourth stretched Scheffler's lead to two. He tacked on a birdie at the par-5 seventh to improve to 9 under. Scheffler's streak extended to 31 straight holes without a bogey until dropping a shot at No. 10, his lone hiccup on the weekend. As Scheffler is apt to do, he bounced back with a birdie at 11, pouring in a 14-foot birdie putt. After that, all of his closest competitors fell by the wayside.
'You can't count on him shooting even tomorrow, so, it would take something special,' said Spieth, who finished T-7, of the difficulty he faced in chasing down Scheffler. 'What impresses me the most is his club face control is elite. It's maybe the best there's ever been as far as club face control. So his consistency is ridiculous. And then that just leads to his distance control being phenomenal.'
Case in point, Scheffler drilled a fairway wood from 250 yards at the par-5 15th that landed near the hole and hopped 14 feet past the hole to set up a 2-putt birdie.
'All he has to do is stay out of trouble and make pars,' tournament host Jack Nicklaus said. "[Don't do] something silly, which I don't expect out of Scottie Scheffler.'
Griffin eagled 15 and sank a 28-foot birdie at 16 to keep it interesting until he doubled 17. He shot 73 and remains the hottest golfer on the planet not named Scheffler. He has two wins, a runner-up at Memorial and a T-8 at the PGA Championship in his last six starts.
The other winner for the week? Rickie Fowler, who played on a sponsor exemption, closed in 73 to finish T-7 and earn a spot in the British Open in July as the top finisher not previously qualified.

Young guns: Golf's influx of youthful talent is on full display at 2025 John Deere Classic
As Americans spend this weekend celebrating the birth of their nation, long referred to as the "Land of Opportunity," several of the world's best golfers have descended upon what could be billed as golf's very own land of opportunity: The John Deere Classic. Held at TPC Deere Run in Moline, Illinois, the JDC has produced 24 first-time winners since 1970 — the most of any tournament on the PGA Tour. Roger Maltbie nabbed his first career victory at the John Deere Classic in 1975. David Toms did the same 22 years later. Then there's Jordan Spieth, who, at 19 years old, was granted a sponsor's exemption to compete in the 2013 John Deere Classic. He holed out from a greenside bunker on the final hole to force a playoff against David Hearn and hometown hero Zach Johnson, which Spieth went on to win. Twelve years and 13 wins later, that legendary shot still belongs near the top of Spieth's long highlight reel. The PGA Tour's stop in the Quad Cities is often overlooked in golf circles — chalked up as the event for players who need FedEx Cup points while others enjoy a holiday weekend at home. But there's no denying that the John Deere Classic has historically served as a breeding ground for the game's biggest stars. Jackson Koivun, who is No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, is in the field at TPC Deere Run this week as a sponsor's exemption. As a freshman at Auburn, Koivun became the first player to win all four major men's collegiate honors in the same year: The Haskins Award, the Jack Nicklaus Award, the Ben Hogan Award, and the Phil Mickelson Award. He's the perfect candidate to reinforce the narrative that the John Deere Classic is a launching pad for the game's future stars. "Obviously, it's really cool to have a bunch of sponsors' exemptions and amateurs play well here," Koivun said in a press conference Wednesday. "It just shows that it's doable. Just got to keep that in the back of my mind and trust my game and myself." Other young guns in this week's field — like 2025 Haskins Award winner David Ford, 2025 NCAA Individual Champion Michael La Sasso, and 2025 Ping All-American Ben James — fit the bill, too. It's a brotherhood of youthful talent. "We're all really good friends. That's definitely something that's cool," Koivun said. "We definitely compete against each other a lot, but it's definitely friendly competition. Me and La Sasso, we live about 20 minutes from each other in North Carolina, so we play a lot of golf together. Ben is an awesome dude. We've played a lot of tournaments together and going back even into junior golf. So there is definitely a sense of camaraderie there." It's a sign of the times in a game that seems to be getting younger by the day. Aldrich Potgieter, a 20-year-old from South Africa, won the Rocket Classic just days ago. "It shows just how golf has kind of changed in the past few years," Koivun said. "I mean, I look at junior golfers and I'm like, 'Wow, these kids are really good.' Even though I was a junior golfer three years ago. It's crazy the leap they've made." Just ask Johnson, the 49-year-old Iowan who is making his 23rd consecutive appearance at the John Deere Classic this week. "We've got athletes playing this game at a young age that could probably go a different direction in sports, but this sport grabbed them, for good measure, because it is awesome," Johnson said. "It's daunting, it's scary, but it's fantastic, if that makes sense. As a competitor, as an athlete out here, the youth of this game is impressive." Similar to Johnson, the John Deere Classic is also a home game of sorts for Koivun. He grew up in North Carolina, but his father is a Quad Cities native. "[There's] a sense of familiarity here," Koivun said. "We got a little bit of family still left in these areas, so it's nice to be able to come back. Obviously, my dad grew up here, so he's got a lot of friends from high school days here, so hopefully I'll get a little nice crowd around here." Koivun is making his fourth PGA Tour start this year. He made the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open (T-56) in January and the Arnold Palmer Invitational (T-48) before missing the cut by just one stroke at the U.S. Open. This week, he's "not trying to have too many expectations," but in golf's land of opportunity, anything is possible. "I feel like my game suits this golf course pretty well. I mean, years past you just need to make a lot of birdies out here to play well, so if I can get that putter hot, I'll feel pretty good about myself."

The PGA Tour is in Silvis, Ill., this week for the 2025 John Deere Classic. It's once again being hosted by TPC Deere Run, giving players ample birdie opportunities on a very scorable course. The first round begins on Thursday morning. Below, we search for the best value prop bets for the John Deere Classic from BetMGM Sportsbook's odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions. Davis Thompson is looking to defend his title at TPC Deere Run after winning here last year, and he comes in with the fourth-best odds of anyone at +2800. Ben Griffin (+1400) is the clear favorite atop the board, with Jason Day (+2200) and Denny McCarthy (+2500) among the other contenders in the field. TPC Deere Run (par 72) will play at 7,289 yards, so it's not a terribly long course. It features tree-lined fairways and greens that are on the larger side, so players should have plenty of birdie chances throughout the week. The winning score has been 18-under or better in every playing of this event since 2010, and Thompson set the scoring record at 28-under par last year – 4 clear of the field. Thorbjornsen is trending up at the moment, finishing in the top 5 three times in his last 6 starts. McCarthy tends to excel on TPC courses and Deere Run is no exception. He's finished sixth or seventh in each of the last 3 years at the John Deere Classic, going on a tear in this event in recent seasons. It helps that he's a great putter, especially with scores expected to be so low once again. John Deere Classic – Top-10 picks Smalley has finishes of 16th and second in his last 3 starts at the John Deere Classic, so he has a fairly good track record in Silvis. Prior to missing the cut at the Rocket Classic last week, Smalley tied for 13th at the RBC Canadian Open. Clanton has endured the typical ups-and-downs of a rookie on the PGA Tour but he has a ton of upside, especially at this course. He made a push last year at the John Deere Classic, finishing T-2 behind Thompson, who ran away from everyone en route to a 4-shot win. Gotterup finished 23rd at the U.S. Open and 26th at the Rocket Classic last week, showing some good form heading into the John Deere Classic. He's long off the tee and though he can be inaccurate with his driver, that's not as penalizing at an easier course like TPC Deere Run. He finished fourth in his tournament debut in 2022. John Deere Classic – Top-20 picks Schenk missed the cut in 2018 and 2024, but in the 3 starts in between that he made here, he finished fourth, fourth and sixth. At such a long price, he's worth betting for a top-20 despite some disappointing showings for most of this season. Valimaki finished 12th in his first start at the John Deere Classic last year, opening with a 61 on Thursday afternoon. His putting numbers are great this season, ranking eighth in strokes gained, so he just needs to give himself enough birdie looks to make some noise this week. Im has finished 26th, 47th and 12th in his 3 career starts in this event, so they aren't the best results. However, he tends to have more success when scoring is low, which it will be this week. He could snap out of a little bit of a funk after finishing no better than 57th in his last 3 starts this season. WATCH: Get ESPN+ John Deere Classic – Matchups Suggested play is golfer in bold. Sungjae Im (+100) vs. Kevin Yu (-125) Yu played well at the RBC Canadian Open and Travelers Championship, which were his last 2 starts. He also finished sixth and 20th in the last 2 years here, but Im is worth taking at plus-money to finish higher on the leaderboard. Denny McCarthy (-118) vs. Ryan Gerard (-105) McCarthy's record here is great and he's not an overwhelming favorite against Gerard, which makes him worth playing at -118. He has a legitimate chance to win this week. John Deere Classic – Top German Jaeger missed the cut at the Rocket Classic last week but getting him at +100 to be the top German against Thomas Rosemueller (+240) and Jeremy Paul (+250) feels like a good value. John Deere Classic – Top Asian Im has the 3rd-best odds to be the top Asian player in this market, behind only Si Woo Kim and Kevin Yu. He's capable of going really low at a course like this. John Deere Classic – First-round leader Valimaki is a terrific putter, ranking eighth in strokes gained on the greens this season.
