Emergency was a 'nasty affair': Gopalkrishna Gandhi
Speaking on 'A Name Inherited, a Voice Earned: Walking the Delicate Path between Legacy and Self' at the 9th edition of the Mysuru Literature Festival 2025 here on Saturday, Gandhi said Rajiv Gandhi had the courage to openly acknowledge his disapproval of the Emergency, something a few in his position would have dared.
'He said in Parliament that the Emergency should not have happened. I choose to remember the Emergency not only for what it was, but for the way it was resisted by people with tremendous guts. I don't see the need to simply condemn everything Indira Gandhi did. What stands out is the silent, brave resistance across the country, people going to jail without fanfare. My brothers — Rajmohan and Ramaswamy -- attended a meeting at Raj Ghat with special permission.
When Kriplani rose to address the gathering, the police raided it, arresting everyone present, even those with no connection to the meeting, and put them in jail. My brothers were among those arrested but were released by evening on Indira Gandhi's orders, knowing their detention would have international repercussions,' he said.
He praised the extraordinary courage of those who opposed the Emergency. 'The Emergency can happen again, anywhere in the world. We need that same guts everywhere to speak out against authoritarianism and supremacism,' he said.
Gandhi also shared that three people who profoundly shaped his thinking and world view were classical singer M S Subbulakshmi, independence activist Jayaprakash Narayan, and his grandfather C Rajagopalachari.

Rahul Gandhi spreading hatred through pre-planned actions, UP govt tells Supreme Court in Savarkar defamation case
NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh government has told the Supreme Court that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is deliberately spreading hatred through pre-planned actions, referring to his alleged remarks against freedom fighter Veer Savarkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022. The government made this claim in an affidavit filed in response to Gandhi's Special Leave Petition (SLP), which seeks to quash a summons issued by a Lucknow lower court based on a criminal complaint by lawyer Nripendra Pandey. A two-judge bench of the top court, comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Manmohan, is scheduled to hear the matter. In its previous hearing on 25 April, the Supreme Court had stayed the Allahabad High Court's order refusing to quash the summons and had directed the UP government to file a response. The Yogi Adityanath-led government, in its affidavit, defended the summons and urged the court to dismiss Gandhi's appeal, stating, "All the allegations are supported by the investigation, which indicates deliberate spreading of hatred through pre-planned actions." The affidavit claimed that the magistrate had thoroughly reviewed the case file, statements, and investigation report before issuing the summoning order under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505 (statements conducive to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Supreme Court extends stay on summons to Rahul Gandhi in Savarkar case
The Supreme Court on Friday (July 25, 2025) extended the stay of summons issued to Congress party leader and leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case accusing him of making derogatory remarks against Hindutva ideologue V.D. Savarkar during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in Maharashtra last year. A Bench headed by Justices Dipankar Datta listed the case after four weeks, giving the complainant, Nripendra Pandey, a Lucknow resident, a fortnight's time to file his response to the challenge filed by Mr. Gandhi in the apex court. The Court had stayed an Uttar Pradesh trial court summons issued to the Congress leader in an order in May while cautioning him from making 'statements against our freedom fighters who gave us freedom'. 'This is not the way to treat our freedom fighters. They have given us freedom,' Justice Datta had said. The Judge had even asked what prompted Mr. Gandhi to make these statements in Maharashtra, where Savarkar was 'worshipped as God'. Referring to Mr. Gandhi's remarks that Savarkar addressed himself as 'most obedient servant' in a communication to the British authorities, Justice Datta had at the time asked Mr. Gandhi's lawyers whether 'your client knows that even Mahatma Gandhi used 'your faithful servant' while addressing the Viceroy? Does he know that his grandmother, while she was Prime Minister, sent a letter to somebody praising this gentleman, the freedom fighter?' Justice Datta said Mr. Gandhi had a 'good point in law' which would entitle him to an order of stay on the summons. In his petition, Mr. Gandhi said the freedom of expression was essential for a dignified life and guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. The Congress leader said the proceedings against him were 'clearly frivolous, vexatious and designed to inflict the criminal process as a virtual punishment to and deterrent for the free exercise of his freedoms and from freely performing his duty as a responsible Opposition political leader at the national level'. The trial court, while summoning Mr. Gandhi, had observed that he had spread hatred and ill-will in society through his speech in which he had said that Savarkar was a servant of the British and that he took a pension from the British. Mr. Gandhi was charged with offences under Section 153A (promoting enmity) and 505 (public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Conspiracy to keep 'Bahujans' out of education, research: Rahul slams govt on vacant university posts
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday (July 25, 2025) attacked the Modi government over vacant reserved posts for SCs, STs and OBCs in central universities and said this is not just negligence but a "well-planned conspiracy" to keep 'Bahujans' out of education, research and policies. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha demanded that all such vacant posts be filled immediately and 'Bahujans' be given their rights, not "Manuwadi boycott". In a post on X in Hindi, Mr. Gandhi said the figures presented by the Modi government in Parliament are solid proof of 'Bahujans' being deprived of their rights and the presence of "institutional Manuism". In central universities, 83% of the posts of professor for STs, 80% for OBCs and 64 per cent for SCs have been "deliberately" kept vacant, he claimed. At the same time, 65% of the posts of assistant professor for STs, 69% for OBCs and 51% for SCs have also been left vacant, the Congress leader charged. "This is not just negligence, it is a well-planned conspiracy to keep Bahujans out of education, research and policies," Mr. Gandhi said. Due to the lack of adequate participation of 'Bahujans' in universities, the problems of deprived communities are deliberately made to disappear from research and discussions, he claimed. "In the name of NFS (Not Found Suitable), thousands of eligible SC, ST, OBC candidates are being declared ineligible under Manuvadi thinking and the government is not ready to take any responsibility," Mr. Gandhi said. "This is completely unacceptable. All vacant posts should be filled immediately, Bahujans should get their rights, not Manuwadi boycott," he said.
