Intel cuts over 500 jobs in Oregon as part of layoff plan

Time of India10-07-2025
HighlightsIntel Corporation is laying off over 500 employees in Oregon, primarily affecting facilities in Aloha and Hillsboro, as part of a broader plan to reduce approximately 20% of its workforce. The layoffs, which are set to begin on July 15, 2023, follow job cuts at Intel's headquarters in Santa Clara, California, where 107 positions were eliminated. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan, Intel Corporation aims to become a more efficient organization by removing complexity and empowering engineers to better meet customer needs.
Intel
Corp. is cutting more than 500 positions in Oregon as part of a layoff plan that's ultimately expected to affect roughly 20% of the chipmaker's staff.
The Oregon job reduction will hit facilities in Aloha and Hillsboro starting on July 15, Intel said in a regulatory filing. The layoffs are expected to eliminate about 529 employees on a permanent basis. The latest disclosure follows an announcement in California, where 107 employees were let go at Intel's Santa Clara headquarters.
Under new Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan, Intel embarked on a plan in April to slash jobs and reduce operating expenses. The company hasn't given a total figure for the cuts, but a person familiar with the matter has put the amount at more than a fifth of staff.
The Oregon announcement helped lift the stock as much as 6.9% in New York trading. Intel shares had climbed nearly 10% in 2025 before Tuesday's move, compared with an 11% gain for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index.
Tan is trying to turn around the Silicon Valley pioneer after years of decline. The company lost its technological advantage to other manufacturers, and has missed out on the boom in artificial intelligence computing — a surge that greatly benefited Nvidia Corp.
In a statement, Intel said it was making the Oregon cuts to become 'a leaner, faster, and more efficient company.'
'Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution,' the company said. 'We are making these decisions based on careful consideration of what's needed to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work.'
Hillsboro, a suburb of Portland, is home to some of Intel's biggest factories and research centers. The struggling chipmaker is the city's largest employer.

Intel may be planning to go the ‘AMD way' and how that can be ‘good news' for gamers

Representative Image Intel may be planning to offer a suite of gaming-specific CPUs, according to a report. This reported move may be an effort by the US-based chip-making company to build goodwill with the gamer community after navigating various internal challenges and facing a cautious outlook on its future. According to a report by VideoCardz, multiple leakers have suggested that Intel is planning to emulate the design elements that contribute to the reliability of AMD's gaming CPUs. AMD's top gaming-specific CPUs utilise "3D V-Cache," which involves a larger memory section that the CPU can quickly access for complex gaming tasks. The CPU acts as the PC's processing unit, handling game logic and physics simulations, while the GPU focuses on graphics rendering. How Intel is planning to offer gamers better CPU options Multiple posts by tipsters suggest that Intel may be working on new desktop chips under its upcoming Nova Lake series that feature a different cache layout. One of the leakers, named Raichu, took to the social media platform X to suggest that some Nova Lake processors may include a component called a Big Last-Level Cache, or bLLC. Another leaker, Haze, also shared similar information earlier this month about the bLLC being part of the new Intel microarchitecture. The exact size of this cache remains unknown, and it's not yet clear how it may compare to AMD's current lineup. Still, it suggests a potential shift in Intel's approach to performance in its upcoming chips. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo In recent years, some PC gamers have turned away from Intel's gaming-focused CPUs. The 13th and 14th-generation chips faced criticism for stability issues caused by incorrect voltage behaviour, which Intel later addressed through patches and extended warranties. However, these problems affected Intel's image among chip enthusiasts. The Arrow Lake series, which followed, didn't significantly improve things on the gaming front, with many users noting that performance lagged behind the company's own earlier releases. Intel issued a patch in February to improve performance, but by then, AMD had already introduced its Ryzen 7 9800X3D, featuring 96MB of V-cache, which drew considerable attention among gaming users. Arrow Lake appears to have been optimised more for general computing and AI tasks than for gaming. While the gaming CPU segment may be smaller than enterprise or productivity-focused markets, gamers remain among Intel's most vocal user groups. To rebuild confidence, Intel may be working toward delivering better gaming experiences once again. According to a report by Gizmodo, some recent gaming laptops equipped with Intel's mobile Arrow Lake HX processors have shown improved performance compared to their immediate predecessors. However, desktop variants have yet to follow suit. Intel's broader challenges may be more closely tied to its slower entry into the AI chip market . Nvidia capitalised on the early demand for AI training hardware, while AMD has recently promoted its Threadripper Pro 9000 WX series as a solution for AI-related tasks. House meeting of Chandigarh MC to discuss major proposals including tax defaulters' list, revenue initiatives

The upcoming General House meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Tuesday is set to witness deliberations and approval of several key proposals, many of which are directly tied to the Corporation's financial health and revenue recovery. Among them, a particularly significant agenda item is a question raised by Councillor Maheshinder Singh Sidhu, seeking details of the top 20 property tax defaulters in the city. In addition to the tax defaulter issue, the meeting will also discuss a policy guideline for managing community centres, Janj Ghars and Dharamshalas under the Corporation. The proposal aims to address observations raised in the audit report of 2023-24, particularly objections regarding the provision of free bookings for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families for marriages, under the existing policy. The audit had flagged the need for clearer regulation and accountability in this regard. Moreover, several representations from public bodies and the Deputy Commissioner's office have raised concerns over noise pollution caused during functions in these venues. In response, a committee chaired by the Joint Commissioner was formed to review and draft a new policy. The committee's recommendations were earlier tabled in the House on March 25, but the proposal was deferred. Subsequently, the mayor constituted a committee of councillors to further refine the policy. The revised proposal is now being brought back for discussion, aimed at creating revenue streams while maintaining public welfare. However, opposition members have criticised the move, terming it an economic burden on the common public. Another proposal on the agenda focuses on the commercial utilisation of gym and fitness centres currently operating in the city's community centres. The Corporation plans to issue Request for Proposals (RFPs) for its professional operation and management. At present, 29 community centres have gym facilities. Selected private operators will be given a three-year contract, with a possible one-year extension based on performance and mutual agreement. The proposal also mentions a 5 per cent annual increase in monthly license fees, helping the MC generate consistent revenue. In yet another bid to boost municipal earnings, the House will take up the proposal for handing over the operation and maintenance of the Rose Club in Sector 16 under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The agreement, if approved, would run for 10 years, with a possible two-year extension. Under the proposed terms, the selected service provider would be responsible for the repair and renovation of the Rose Club without altering its original structure. Facilities like a restaurant, gym, and library would also be operated under the same agreement.
