Nearly two months after communal violence rocked West Bengal's Murshidabad district during anti-Waqf demonstrations, police on Tuesday arrested two men alleged to be the masterminds of the April protest that sparked the unrest.According to police sources, the arrested duo, Kausar Sheikh and Mursalim Sheikh, were involved in mobilising the crowd that had gathered at Samsherganj's Dakbungalow intersection to protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Both are residents of Samsherganj and are said to be linked to an NGO.advertisementPolice said they ran a local campaign to draw people to the protest site.
The two were produced in the Jangipur sub-divisional court on Tuesday, where police sought their custody for further questioning.The April protest turned violent after clashes broke out between police and the protesters during anti-Waqf demonstration.The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, was passed by Parliament after lengthy debates and got the President's approval on April 5. The Act updates the Waqf Act, 1995, which deals with managing waqf properties in India. The changes focus on keeping better records, resolving disputes, and improving oversight.There were pan-India protests over the Waqf Act, with the demonstration turning violent in Bengal.Several shops owned by Hindus were attacked in Samsherganj, leading to large-scale arson, looting, and three deaths.The unrest later spread to Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, where supporters of the India Secular Front clashed with police and set vehicles ablaze after being stopped from marching to Kolkata.In the aftermath, paramilitary forces, including the Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force, were deployed to control the situation. CHENNAI: Police are conducting a statewide search for a migrant teenager accused of sexually assaulting a Class IV student in Arambakkam, Gummidipoondi, on July 12. The victim was walking near her home when the suspect allegedly gagged her, dragged her to a secluded area, and assaulted her before fleeing. Security has been heightened at the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border, particularly the Elavur checkpost, to prevent the accused from escaping. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday led a protest in Villupuram, questioning the DMK government's commitment to social justice and demanding the implementation of 10.5 per cent internal reservation for the Vanniyar community, a prominent backward community in the the founding day of the Vanniyar Sangam, Anbumani lashed out at the DMK for failing to conduct a caste survey and for not implementing the Supreme Court's directive granting internal reservation to the Vanniyars, which he claimed has been pending for 1,208 by exposing the social injustice of the DMK government and through intense, non-violent struggles, as we did in the past under the guidance of Ramadoss, can we secure reservation for Vanniyars,' Anbumani said while addressing the gathering. He recalled the sacrifices of 21 protesters, including 15 from Villupuram, who were killed during earlier agitations for reservation. 'They lost their lives so that the community's children could study and live with self-respect. Stalin should immediately bring internal reservation for Vanniyars,' he to Anbumani, the Supreme Court had clarified that the Tamil Nadu government has full authority to implement internal reservation without the need for a caste survey or approval from the Centre. Yet, he alleged, the DMK government continues to delay.'Even a panchayat leader has the authority to conduct a caste survey under the Indian Statistical Act, 2008.
