Inter Milan's Mehdi Taremi Misses Club WC Amid Iran Crisis
Taremi was in Iran last week on international duty, scoring in a 3-0 victory over North Korea in a World Cup qualifying game.
However the 32-year-old was unable to get a flight to join his Inter team-mates in Los Angeles due to the ongoing confrontation between Iran and Israel.
An Inter source confirmed to AFP that Taremi was stranded in his homeland.
Inter open their Club World Cup campaign against Mexican side Monterrey on Tuesday at the Pasadena Rose Bowl east of Los Angeles.
The opener marks the first game in charge of new Inter coach Cristian Chivu, who was named on Monday as the successor to Simone Inzaghi, who left following the club's 5-0 drubbing against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
Speaking at an introductory press conference at the team base in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Chivu said Inter were ready to bounce back from the double disappointment of just missing out on the Serie A title as well as the Champions League final.
The 44-year-old former Romanian international said Inter could look back on the season with pride.
'We should't forget this team's journey -- it was a great season,' Chivu said.
'This team has great quality. They got right to the end but they didn't get the trophies. It wasn't a failure of a season.
'We knocked out Bayern and Barca in the Champions League. We were top of the league, one of the best in Europe, for a long time. So we cannot forget this. Failure doesn't exist in football. Failure is making excuses.'

I haven't been home for two months. "As much as I just think they're a great group of young men. There's other things that I need to make sure I tick off." In victory as in defeat, Schmidt is not given to hyperbolic comments about his team and he merely said that he had been impressed by how they bounced back after losing the second test, and the series, to a late try in Melbourne last week. He also gave a little insight into the thoroughness of his preparations after Saturday's match was suspended for 40 minutes due to a lightning warning in the area. That the Wallabies came out firing after the delay while the Lions were a bit flat was clearly no accident. "We had been warned that there might be lightning, so we had a little bit of a plan," Schmidt said. "We wanted to make sure that players kept moving. So we had different guys rotating onto the bikes. "We had four balls in the changing room that we've just thrown around just so they could stay connected, and the rest of the time it was really just trying to get us organised for the restart of the game. Newcastle sign goalkeeper Ramsdale on loan from Southampton
LONDON: Newcastle United have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said today. The 27-year-old England goalkeeper, who made the second-most saves in the league last season at 125, has worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his spell at Bournemouth. THE United States set a new world record in sealing a dominant victory in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay at the world championships on Saturday. The US team took gold in Singapore in 3min 18.48sec, beating Australia's previous leading time of 3:18.83 set in 2023. The 'neutral athletes' team from Russia finished second in 3:19.68, with France third in 3:21.35. The American team of Jack Alexy, Patrick Sammon, Kate Douglass and Torri Huske took control from the start and from then on their battle was against the clock.
