Iraq expands Baiji refinery complex

Iraqi News12 hours ago
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The northern Iraqi province of Salah al-Din marked an important milestone in the energy sector with the opening of a new oil refinery and the commencement of a large project to rehabilitate the Baiji gas power plant, ushering in a new era of growth in the country.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated on Saturday the oil refinery and a power plant in the city of Baiji, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The project is part of the Iraqi government's ambitions to reconstruct terrorism-damaged facilities and attain self-sufficiency in fuel and energy production.
The refinery is currently operating at full capacity, producing up to 250,000 tons of oil annually.
Al-Sudani noted that the inauguration of the refinery demonstrates Iraq's ability to accomplish projects that used to be carried out by foreign corporations.
The prime minister also inaugurated a 50-megawatt power plant designed to meet the refinery's electrical needs independently of the national grid. This ensures continuous operation and alleviates pressure on the country's electrical network.
The refinery produces various types of oils, such as engine oils, heavy oils, and turbine oils, in addition to 600,000 tons of multi-grade asphalt each year. This output supports the local market and helps conserve foreign currency.
Al-Sudani said in January that the city of Baiji is expected to be one of the largest cities in the oil industry in the region.
At the following phase, a petrochemical plant will be set up at refineries in Baiji, according to Al-Sudani.
The Iraqi government is working on several strategic initiatives that are being carried out for the first time in the country's history. These initiatives are projected to increase the country's output of oil, gas, and electricity.

Chevron, SLB Deals Signal US Return to Iraqi Oilfields

Chevron, SLB Deals Signal US Return to Iraqi Oilfields There are two distinct superpower strategies at play to capture the very heartland of the Middle East - Iraq. On the one hand, China and Russia want to end the semi-independent status of Kurdistan in the north, have it rolled into the rest of Iraq as a regular province, and then expel all Western firms from the then-unified country. On the other hand, the US and its allies want to bolster the independence of the Kurdistan region to act as leverage to extend their influence in the rest of Iraq to the south. German-Chinese Consortium Expand Baiji Power Station

By John Lee. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has officially launched the first phase of the second Baiji Gas Power Station in Salahuddin province, a project that will add up to 1,014 megawatts to Iraq's power grid. Speaking at the launch event on Saturday, Al-Sudani reiterated that energy is the cornerstone of Iraq's comprehensive development plans. He confirmed that the government has allocated financial resources to support the full energy value chain - production, transmission, and distribution - across the country. The project will be executed by a consortium of Siemens Energy (Germany) and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). The contract covers the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 169 MW. Key components include: A load evacuation network of seven lines at 400 kV, linking six transmission lines to the national grid. A new 132 kV transmission system comprising 16 lines to serve Salahuddin province. The first two units are expected to be operational within 27 months, with subsequent units coming online at two-month intervals. (Sources: PMO, Ministry of Electricity)

Iraq calls for stronger worldwide recognition of Yazidi genocide

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Foreign Ministry urged international recognition of the 2014 assault against the Yazidi community as genocide and crimes against humanity, denouncing the deaths, kidnappings, and abuse of minorities. The ministry reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to find the missing and support survivors, as its embassies kept on advocating for justice. It also emphasized the need to collaborate with humanitarian organizations to track down abductees and help rebuild the community. ISIS militants launched a catastrophic assault on August 3, 2014, against the Yazidi people of Sinjar in northeastern Iraq, near the Syrian border. ISIS committed genocide, as well as several crimes against humanity and war crimes, including mass killings, forced religious conversions to Islam, enslavement, and wild sexual assault against women and girls, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani urged the government to increase efforts to find the missing, expedite the exhumation of mass graves, and fully enforce the Yazidi Survivors Law, which was passed in 2021 to support women enslaved by ISIS. Following the offensive on Sinjar, ISIS terrorists forcefully relocated thousands of abducted Yazidis to Syria, where young females were subjected to sexual slavery and Yazidi boys were forced to train for warfare and suicide missions.
