English Premier League integrates Microsoft AI into fan app in new 5-year deal

CNBC3 days ago
The English Premier League is bringing artificial intelligence to the soccer pitch through a new partnership with Microsoft.
The five-year agreement will integrate Microsoft's Copilot AI into the English Premier League app, offering fans access to more than 300,000 articles, 9,000 videos and statistics from the league dating back to its founding in 1992.
Future iterations of the technology will translate text and audio into a user's native language and will enhance the digital Fantasy Premier League offerings.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"This partnership will help us engage with fans in new ways — from personalized content to real-time match insights," Richard Masters, English Premier League CEO, said in a news release.
The English Premier League is widely seen as the most prestigious soccer organization in the world and is the most-watched, airing matches in 189 countries and reaching 900 million homes globally, according to the league.
"By leveraging our secure cloud and AI technologies — including Azure AI Foundry Services with Azure OpenAI, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Dynamics 365 — we will transform how football is experienced, delivered, and managed on and off the field," Judson Althoff, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Microsoft, said in a statement.
Under the partnership, Microsoft is also becoming the league's cloud computing partner after a previous contract with Oracle ended.
The English Premier League season begins Aug. 15. Before that, fans can watch the Premier League Summer Series, a tournament of "friendly," or exhibition, matches, from July 26 to Aug. 3 in the U.S. The first matches will be held at MetLife Stadium near New York City with Everton facing AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United facing West Ham United.

If You Bought 1 Share of Microsoft at Its IPO, Here's How Many Shares You'd Own Now

Next to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), stock splits have been the most exciting trend on Wall Street. Since its initial public offering (IPO) in March 1986, Microsoft has completed nine forward stock splits. Microsoft's cash-flow-rich legacy operations blend perfectly with its cloud- and AI-driven future. 10 stocks we like better than Microsoft › Next to artificial intelligence (AI), stock splits have been Wall Street's hottest trend. A stock split allows a company to cosmetically alter its share price and outstanding share count without any effect on its market cap or underlying operating performance. Following over a dozen big-time stock splits in 2024, a trio of brand-name businesses have followed suit this year. However, few companies can match the success, or sheer number of splits, software behemoth Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has brought to the table. Microsoft made its debut as a public company on March 13, 1986, at an initial public offering (IPO) price of $21 per share. In the 39 years that have followed, it's completed nine stock splits: September 1987: 2-for-1 April 1990: 2-for-1 June 1991: 3-for-2 June 1992: 3-for-2 May 1994: 2-for-1 December 1996: 2-for-1 February 1998: 2-for-1 March 1999: 2-for-1 February 2003: 2-for-1 A single share purchased on March 13, 1986 for $21 would have grown to a cumulative 288 shares, worth $141,710 (not including dividends), as of the closing bell on July 1, 2025. Although access to fractional-share purchasing has reduced the urgency for companies to complete forward splits, Microsoft's meaningful share ownership by everyday investors, who hold 34% of its outstanding shares, and nominally high share price of $492.05, may coerce its 10th split sooner than later. Microsoft stock has benefited immensely from its aggressive investments in cloud computing and AI. Cloud infrastructure service platform Azure is No. 2 globally by spending -- a 23% share in the March-ended quarter, per Canalys -- and could see its sales growth reaccelerate as generative AI solutions are integrated into the platform. Don't overlook its legacy operations, either. While the growth heyday for Windows and Office is long gone, Microsoft's high-margin legacy segments generate boatloads of cash flow that it can use for high-growth initiatives, such as AI investments, stock buybacks, or its ever-growing dividend. Nvidia Could Be About To Do Something No Company Has Ever Done

Nvidia could be poised to claim the title of most valuable company in history, as its market capitalization nears $4 trillion. The chipmaker's shares closed at an all-time high Thursday, bringing its market value closer to Apple's record of $3.91 trillion set in December. Wedbush analysts said they believe Nvidia and Microsoft could breach the $4 trillion threshold this summer, something no company has done (NVDA) could be poised to claim the title of most valuable company in history, as its market value nears $4 trillion. The AI chipmaker's shares rose just over 1% to close at an all-time high of $159.34 Thursday, pushing its market capitalization to $3.89 trillion. If the stock had sustained its intraday highs closer to $161, its market value would have topped Apple's (AAPL) closing record of $3.91 trillion in December. With another roughly 3% rise from Thursday's closing price to $163.93, Nvidia could also hit the $4 trillion market cap threshold soon, something no other company has done. Microsoft (MSFT), which has jockeyed with Nvidia this year for the title of world's most valuable company, could too, according to Wedbush analysts led by Dan Ives. 'We believe both Nvidia and Microsoft will hit the $4 trillion market cap club this summer and then over the next 18 months the focus will be on the $5 trillion this tech bull market is still early being led by the AI Revolution," the analysts said in a note to clients Thursday. Thursday's rise came amid broader market gains, with the benchmark S&P 500 index and tech-heavy Nasdaq hitting all-time highs ahead of a long holiday weekend. The stock market closed early at 1 p.m. ET Thursday ahead of the July 4 holiday on Friday. Read the original article on Investopedia

Jim Cramer makes a bold statement on AI job threats

2025 has been the year of the AI boom, with one headline after another about how AI is now being used for everything you can possibly imagine. You can use the tech to replace your therapist, do hours of grueling research in minutes, and even apply to jobs en masse (which is making recruiters' lives miserable as we speak). Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter One of the most common headlines out there is that AI will replace millions of white-collar jobs, which has been quite scary for a lot of folks in that very workforce. Several key CEOs have said it in one way or another, including Amazon's Andy Jassy, Duolingo's Luis von Ahn, and Shopify's Tobi Lütke. Related: Microsoft sends a brutal message to loyal employees Add in the seemingly endless layoff announcements that have kept coming this year - Microsoft being the latest, having conducted multiple rounds of cuts in the past year - and things don't look good for the future of making a living. Companies have cut 744, 308 jobs since the beginning of the year, the largest amount of cuts since the pandemic hit in 2020, per outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. One well-respected financial voice has a different take on the whole situation, however, and he offered an opinion today many will be happy to hear. Image source: Galai/Getty Images CNBC pundit Jim Cramer is known for his opinions about a wide variety of topics, from the stock market to the state of the economy. "CEOs have been saying that AI will wipe out jobs at their companies," Cramer wrote. "But it hasn't happened at most traditional white-collar firms. They are still hiring, still paying a lot. AI is still not trusted at the highest rungs of major companies." A few voices sided with Cramer's take. "AI's potential is more hype than reality for now. Traditional firms are cautious, hiring is steady, and trust is still a barrier. Smart money knows the game: Invest in companies that leverage AI responsibly, not those that chase the buzz," wrote X user 007ofWallStreet. Related: Google's quiet AI win spells trouble for Amazon However, most opinions went in the opposite direction. "Tell that to the 9K people at MSFT that just got laid off due to AI," X user Luca said. "You are blind Cramer," wrote X user RaleighReefs. "I would think someone that deals in stocks would be able to see long term in other areas than stocks. Clearly your skills don't translate." "Any home-gamer or cramerican who has tapped into Grok, Chat GPT, or other AI platform can see the incredible power of this technology. This will translate to the corporate world as well. Hopefully new jobs will emerge as AI takes over the more mundane and repetitive tasks. Early innings," wrote X user Jim Pulanski. While many major tech companies are investing heavily in AI and aggressively cutting their headcounts, there is such a thing as moving too fast, too soon. Fintech company Klarna tried to embrace the tech quickly, going as far as to boast that it had saved $10 million by replacing 700 of its human employees with AI chatbots. But after its Q1 earnings reflected a $99 million net loss, Klarna backpedaled and said it would go back to hiring human employees. "As cost unfortunately seems to have been a too-predominant evaluation factor when organizing this, what you end up having is lower quality," Siemiatkowski said, referring to the customer experience with AI. Some other businesses, like Walmart, have promised a more hopeful approach, saying that it will use AI in tandem with its workforce rather than replacing them with it. "AI is a key enabler in improving how we work, and we believe its full potential is unlocked only when paired with the strengths of our people," Walmart Transformation & Innovation Senior VP Greg Cathey said.
