PNGRB wants GST on CNG vehicles to be lowered, no excise on CBG

From pegging Goods and Services Tax rate on a par with that on electric vehicles to waiving excise duty on compression of natural gas and on the compressed biogas component in the fuel, India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is for a clutch of changes to accelerate compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle usage. It is also for maintaining a delta between CNG and petrol prices to keep the interest in the former going, primarily by tweaking excise duty rates. Reduction in allocation of CNG at administered prices or under the APM remains a concern and could upset the calculations, a document prepared by the oil regulator earlier but made public now showed. Listing the policy interventions required, PNGRB said the transport segment will be a key driver to push up the share of natural gas in India's energy mix to 15% by 2030 from the existing around 6%. Towards this, it wanted GST on CNG vehicles to be reduced, from 28% to the 5% that levied on EVs. On changes to excise duty, the regulator said compression of natural gas, which is undertaken to fill more fuel in the tank and consequently increase vehicle range, is considered as deemed manufacturing. No excise duty would translate into lower CNG prices for consumers and consequent benefits to the environment from use of the eco-friendly fuel. Also with APM allocation headed towards zero in future, reduction in excise duty is necessary to keep CNG competitive compared to other alternate fuels. Full excise duty waiver will have an immediate impact of Rs.6500-7000 crore a year for the exchequer, but bring multiple benefits, including reduction in healthcare costs. On CBG blending, the regulator said the additional excise and VAT that CBG attracts impacts the final price of CNG. Earlier this week, the PNGRB Board approved the Second Amendment to the Natural Gas Pipeline Tariff Regulations, 2025, which included reducing the number of Unified Tariff Zones from three to two to simplify natural gas transportation system across the country, ensures a more equitable tariff structure and enhance access to natural gas, especially in underserved regions. It said the benefit of the Unified Zonal Tariff of Zone 1 has been extended countrywide to CNG and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) Domestic segments to enhance the affordability of the fuel.

Toyota Glanza Prestige Edition launched: Here's what it gets

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has refreshed its premium hatchback offering, the Glanza, by introducing a new limited-period 'Prestige Package' accessory bundle. Aimed at enhancing the car's visual appeal and cabin ambiance, the package is available across dealerships until July 31. This latest update builds on the Glanza's growing popularity in India's competitive hatchback market. The 'Prestige Package' includes several stylish, dealer-fitted cosmetic upgrades. These comprise chrome-accented body side mouldings, rear lamp and lower grille garnishes, door visors, illuminated scuff plates, and a sporty rear skid plate. Though optional, these accessories are expected to appeal to buyers seeking a more personalised and upmarket look for their vehicle. Launched in 2019, the Toyota Glanza is based on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and has carved a niche for itself with over two lakh units sold since its debut. It is particularly popular among urban commuters and first-time buyers, thanks to its combination of fuel efficiency, modern features, and compact proportions that suit city driving. Under the hood, the Glanza continues with the same 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that delivers a peppy yet efficient performance. Customers can choose between a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox, while a CNG variant is also available for those prioritising low running costs. Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 22.94 km/l for the AMT variant and an impressive 30.61 km/kg for the CNG model. The hatchback remains well-equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Head-Up Display (HUD), 360-degree camera, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and connected car technology via Toyota i-Connect. Additionally, safety has received a boost with six airbags now being offered as standard across variants. Priced from ₹ 6.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the updated Glanza continues to offer great value in the premium hatchback space. It also retains Toyota's standard 3-year/100,000 km warranty, which can be extended up to 5 years or 2,20,000 km—reaffirming the brand's commitment to reliability and peace of mind. With the addition of the Prestige Package and enhanced safety features, Toyota's Glanza is now an even more compelling choice for buyers looking for a stylish, feature-rich, and dependable hatchback.

KMC seeks funds from govt for upgrading waste management system

Kolhapur: The KMC administration has sent a proposal of Rs 13 crore to the govt to upgrade waste management system at the trash processing site at Kasba Bavda. If the system here is upgraded, 300 tonnes of waste can be processed per day, said deputy commissioner Paritosh Kankal. This proposal has been sent with a view to increase the capacity of waste processing, considering the eight villages that will be included in the city after the merger of fringe villages with Kolhapur Municipal corporation limits, added Kankal. On Friday, KMC administrative officials visited all the projects under the health department of KMC, such as STP plant, solid waste project, biomedical waste processing plant, and garbage project. The waste coming from the city is processed through RDF (refuse derived fuel), biogas, compost fertilizer, slurry horticulture, etc. projects. Assistant commissioner Krishnat Patil, Hemant Kashid, and other officials were present. Around 230 tonnes of waste is collected from the entire city per day at the waste processing plant at Kasba Bawda. Of this, 200 to 210 tonnes of waste is processed here. Deputy commissioner Paritosh Kankal said, "The existing system was installed in 2019. Currently, the system needs to be updated. A fund of Rs13 crore is required for this, and the proposal has been submitted to the govt by the municipal administration. The upcoming biogas project has a capacity of 30 tonnes. It will be upgraded to 50 tonnes. If the capacity of the project is increased, it will be able to generate electricity and produce CNG gas. The power generation system is ready. But a project will have to be set up to convert biogas into CNG gas, and a fund of 5 crore is required for this. Efforts are underway to provide funds from MPCP and the non-conventional energy department." Assistant commissioner Krishnat Patil said, "Around 1,65,000 metric tonnes of waste is lying at the project site. The garbage dump will be removed through biomining. The process of biomining is in the final stages. Biomining will start soon after the monsoon. The garbage mountain here will be destroyed within a year. The work on the third development plan of the city is underway. In this, there is a demand that space be given for waste processing projects under the four divisional offices of the city. It is expensive to collect waste from the entire city in one place. Therefore, the municipal corporation will try to decentralise the waste processing project in future."
