The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sentenced Abednego Desmond Mbuyane on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Hawks provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, confirmed to The South African that Mbuyane killed Nkosi after finding him in a room with his wife at Kwanyoni Lodge, Nelspruit, in April 2023.

The former traffic cop had been calling his wife multiple times to no avail. Seeing that she was not answering his calls, he became suspicious and tracked the vehicle she was travelling in, which pointed him to the lodge.

Nightclub stabbing leaves Isipingo teen dead
THE police are investigating a case of murder after a 19-year-old Isipingo youth died after being stabbed during an altercation outside a nightclub on July 12. School bus accident on West Park Road leaves children injured
An incident occurred on July 28 when a school bus transporting children rolled over on West Park Road in Montgomery Park. SCP Security responded promptly to the motor vehicle accident, where a taxi overturned while carrying a load of schoolchildren. Jaun van der Westhuizen, from SCP Security, reported that they received a call for assistance at 07:15 that morning. 'SCP Security got called for a taxi that lost control and rolled while transporting schoolchildren on the famous West Park Road,' he said. The security team arrived on the scene within minutes to find chaos, with children climbing out of the vehicle, some crying, and others in shock or injured, said Van Der Westhuizen. Fortunately, there were no life-threatening injuries reported. 'Approximately eight children were injured and were transported to the hospital by ER24, Help24, and Netcare911. Witnesses at the scene indicated that the taxi was speeding and had overtaken another vehicle before losing control.' This incident follows a tragic accident on the same road just three weeks prior, where three people lost their lives. SCP Private Fire Search and Rescue and the City of Johannesburg were called to that scene to extricate the deceased from the vehicle. Van Der Westhuizen questioned how many more lives needed to be lost before something gets done on this road. Committee slams poor enforcement of prison overcrowding laws
The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services has expressed concern over the low success rate of legislation aimed at reducing overcrowding in the country's correctional facilities. This follows a briefing from the Department of Correctional Services on the implementation of Section 49G of the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 and Section 62F of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. Both sections aim to ease pressure on the country's overburdened correctional system. Section 49G states that a remand detainee may not be held for more than two years without the matter being brought before the relevant court. The head of the remand detention centre must refer such a case to court at least three months before the two-year period lapses to give the court time to consider it. If the detainee remains in custody, further submissions must be made each year. Section 62F allows for the placement of awaiting-trial detainees under the supervision of a correctional official as a bail condition. During a briefing on Friday, the committee heard that the success rate under Section 49G for the 2022/23 financial year was just 1.25% of 12 283 court referrals nationally. The Eastern Cape and Western Cape recorded a 0% success rate. In 2023/24, the Eastern Cape again reported 0%. In 2024/25, only one of 142 court referrals was successful, while two were successful in the current financial year. 'The committee also heard that approximately 40% of the total sentenced offender population are serving sentences above 15 years, including life sentences. Lifers will typically remain incarcerated for longer periods and are sentenced or convicted of serious crimes.
