The FTC has mentioned that you can apply for a refund if you meet at least one of the following criteria, as compiled by TechRadar:
You were charged in-game currency for items you didn't want between January 2017 and September 2022
Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges

Who can file a claim?
However, to submit the claim form, you must be at least 18 years old and above, so a parent or guardian can also complete the claim form on behalf of those under that age, as reported by TechRadar.
Watch out for scams
According to the report, the claims process is only open for those in the United States, while the FTC has also warned against potential refund scams, reiterating the fact that it will never charge in order to file a claim. "Don't pay anyone who promises you an FTC refund in exchange for a fee," as quoted in the report.

Why is Epic Games refunding players?
The refunds stem from a 2022 settlement between the FTC and Epic Games, Fortnite's developer, according to the report. Epic Games was accused of using deceptive design tactics, which are called 'dark patterns,' to trick players into making unintended purchases, according to the report. The company was also charged with violating children's privacy laws, which is the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), as per the TechRadar report.
FTC says kids were targeted
FTC chair Lina M. Khan said previously that, "Epic used privacy-invasive default settings and deceptive interfaces that tricked Fortnite users, including teenagers and children," as quoted in the report.
Khan also said, "Protecting the public, and especially children, from online privacy invasions and dark patterns is a top priority for the Commission, and these enforcement actions make clear to businesses that the FTC is cracking down on these unlawful practices," quoted TechRadar in its report.

The company had then agreed to pay $245 million as compensation for the agency's claim that they used 'deceptive practices to trick players into making unwanted purchases.' The announcement came on Wednesday (June 25). How to get a Fortnite refund? The first round of refunds worth $72 million was issued by the FTC in December. Those who file a valid claim by June 2025-26 will receive payments totaling $126 million. As per FTC guidelines, those who satisfy any of these statements can file a claim: 'You were charged in-game currency for items you didn't want between January 2017 and September 2022 'Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018 'Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges. What is the deadline to submit a claim? Applicants can go on to the FTC's website and file a suitable claim by July 9. Those above 18 years of age can do so on their own while those who are underage need a parent or guardian to do the same for them. However, in such a case, the parent/ guardian must enter their own name and contact information. When will payments be processed? The FTC will send all additional payments in 2026 once they have 'reviewed and validated all claims'. Refunds will be processed via checks or PayPal payments. The exact amount depends on how many claims are filed by individuals which the FTC is currently approximating to be around 900,000. 'The Commission's interactive dashboards for refund data provide a state-by-state breakdown of refunds in FTC cases. Epic agreed to pay $245 million after the agency accused the company of using 'deceptive practices' that led players to make unintended in-game purchases. The first round of refunds was issued in December 2024 by the FTC, where the agency made over 629,000 payments, bringing the total sum to $72 million. In its latest round of refunds, the agency sent out nearly 970,000 payments, including checks and PayPal transactions. However, these will only reach consumers who have filled out a valid claim. On June 25, the FTC stated, 'Today's announcement brings the total amount of refunds the FTC has issued to consumer related to Epic's deceptive billing practices to nearly $200 million,' in a news release, as reported by USA Today. According to the agency, consumers chose their preferred payment method, check or PayPal, when completing the claim form. Check recipients must cash their checks within 90 days, as indicated, while PayPal users have 30 days to redeem their funds. Those who haven't filed a claim yet have until July 9, 2025, to do so at Fortnite is known for its popular Battle Royale mode, which allows up to 100 players to fight in one go until there is one last standing. The game is free to download; however, there are in-game purchases, which are known as microtransactions among gamers. These microtransactions can be anything from costumes to certain dance moves, which gamers have understood over a period of time. However, FTC believes that Epic Games used 'dark patterns' to disguise in-game purchase prompts, leading players, often children, to unknowingly make purchases. In some cases, a single button press, such as waking the game from sleep or previewing an item, triggered charges without consent. These practices occurred between 2017 and 2022.
