Moot to spotlight plastic waste solutions
The event marks World Environment Day more meaningfully with a thematic conference and appreciation awards for the good work.
The conference will include the high-level inaugural panel on "Plastic Waste: From Pollution to Solution". The other two sessions will focus on "Single-use Plastics: Sustainable Consumption, Production and Alternatives", and "The Waste Business: 3Rs and Integrated Resource Recycling (IRR)".
The Second Pakistan Environmental Awards will also be conferred upon some of the best practices promoted under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Corporate Environmental Compliance (CEC), and environmental conservation projects by the nongovernmental sector. Some individuals and media persons will also be awarded for their good work.
Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said: "By beating the plastic pollution, together we can create a healthier future for the planet earth. This year's World Environment Day theme reminds us of our collective responsibility. This year's World Environment Day comes exactly two months before countries meet again to continue negotiating a global treaty to end plastic pollution.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world. The Republic of Korea will host World Environment Day 2025 with a focus on ending plastic pollution globally.

Pakistan, UK agree to deepen defence cooperation
Pakistan and the United Kingdom have agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of defence, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. The development came during a high-level meeting between British High Commissioner H.E. Last month, ministers from the UK and Pakistan announced new measures to boost trade between the two countries, following the launch of the UK-Pakistan Trade Dialogue. The ministers announced the creation of a new UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council, bringing together senior business leaders and government officials to facilitate high-value trade and investment. The council will provide strategic advice on policy reform, offer a confidential forum for engagement, and help promote commercial opportunities by addressing market access challenges and sharing best practices. The UK has also announced up to £200,000 to support Pakistan's aspirations to attract investment from the UK. The funds will provide technical assistance for investor outreach, and support matchmaking between Pakistani investors and UK-based opportunities. Bilateral trade is currently valued at £4.7 billion.

KATI for removal of Iran-Pakistan trade barriers
KARACHI: Calling for enhanced governmental support, the President of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Junaid Naqi urged both governments to take practical steps to eliminate trade barriers and help local businesses explore opportunities in the Iranian market. He also advocated for the promotion of barter trade to accelerate bilateral trade expansion. Welcoming the signing of 12 ministerial-level agreements between Pakistan and Iran, he said that the recently concluded negotiations on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will pave the way for economic prosperity and deeper bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly nations. The FTA, according to Naqi, will lead to tariff reductions, removal of trade obstacles, and stimulate the business environment in both countries. He underscored the urgent need to strengthen economic linkages and business-to-business interactions, suggesting that joint exhibitions and B2B meetings be organized regularly. Naqi further urged the government to introduce effective policies to support domestic and foreign investors, citing lucrative opportunities in Pakistan's agriculture and industrial sectors. 'The Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement has the potential to redefine our economic landscape and help both nations meet their growth targets through enhanced regional cooperation,' he concluded. Naqi highlighted that the current bilateral trade volume stands at just $3 billion, with Pakistan contributing only one-third, well below expectations. He stressed that with mutual efforts, the trade volume could be expanded to $10 billion. He identified key sectors with significant potential, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather, and food products, and emphasized the importance of leveraging Iran's affordable energy resources for Pakistan's industrial growth. 'Pakistan and Iran have long-standing relations that continue to strengthen over time. ‘Mera Brand Pakistan' event to be held at Lahore Expo Centre
LAHORE: Mera Brand Pakistan' Expo will be held at Lahore Expo Centre from August 14 and 15. The event aims to promote Pakistani products and industries and foster self-reliance in the national economy. It was revealed at a Press Conference jointly organized by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Pakistan Business Forum. Addressing the press conference, President of LCCI Mian Abuzar Shad, Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman, Chaudhry Mohsin Bashir, Ijaz Tanveer, Abdul Wadood Alvi and Asim Shafiq Sheikh underscored the importance of trust building trust in locally made products and promoting the 'Made in Pakistan' identity. LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad said that it is time to end reliance on foreign goods and embrace the immense potential of local industries. 'Our national industries have remarkable capacity – they only need trust and promotion. The Mera Brand Pakistan Expo is designed to provide every Pakistani manufacturer and brand with a platform to showcase their products to the public, buyers and exporters. He said that Pakistan must become self-sufficient to meet its needs and that pride in national production and participation in such expos is essential. The key to Pakistan's growth lies in boosting exports, and that is only possible by enhancing the global identity of Pakistani products. Engineer Khalid Usman, LCCI Senior Vice President, called the event a significant step toward economic self-reliance. He said the exhibition has especially created space for small and medium enterprises. He said that Economic stability is impossible without the growth of local production. The exhibition will feature a wide array of Made-in-Pakistan goods, including textiles, cosmetics, food, household items, furniture, footwear, leather goods, engineering products and daily-use essentials. Ijaz Tanveer said that every small industrialist in Pakistan has the potential to bring major change. This is the moment for our youth entrepreneurs to benefit from such a platform and transform Pakistan from a consumer market into a producer economy.
