Spitfires willing to stay patient waiting for decision on Red Wings pick
Even picking late, the Windsor Spitfires are still feeling great.

It wasn't until the 53rd pick in the first round that the Spitfires made a selection in Wednesday's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

Still, the club was thrilled to land Slovakian forward Michal Svrcek, who was a fourth-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings in Saturday's NHL Draft.

'He's a really good player,' Spitfires' general manager Bill Bowler said. 'He skates exceptionally well, has excellent offensive instincts and is always attacking with speed. We hope to get a chance to bring Michal over.'

Bowler added Kazakstan forward Beksultan Makysh in the second round with the 112th selection and, in the third round with the 139th selection overall, the Spitfires took Switzerland forward Loan Burkhalter.

'We think we got three players that can play in the OHL and excel,' Bowler said.

Detroit took the five-foot-11, 189-pound forward with the 119th pick overall and Svrcek wrapped up four days at the team's prospects camp on Thursday.

'I felt like Detroit could draft me,' the 18-year-old Svrcek said. 'I talked to them a lot and had great meetings. I was not surprised. It was a great moment. I've enjoyed every moment (at camp). I'm so happy.'

Svrcek is an intriguing prospect, but at this point not a lock to be in Windsor for the 2025-26 season.

'There's a rather complex process involved in the decision of Michal coming to the CHL this year or not,' said Allan Walsh, who represents Svrcek. 'We're actively involved in the process with Michal and Detroit in figuring out where the best place is for him to play and working quickly to make a decision in collaboration with each other.'

Svrcek played for several clubs in 2024-25, but spent the majority of the season with the Brynas IF's under-20 team in Sweden's top junior league where he had 14 goals and 30 points in 30 games. While known for his speed and skill, Svrcek also brings some grit to the game.

'I like to play a fast game,' Svrcek said. 'I try to play on the boards. That's kind of the North American game. Now, I'm going to decide what's best for me.'

Still, Walsh said he could not think of a better place for Svrcek to grow his game than Windsor.

'Michal is ecstatic to be drafted by Windsor, but there's a process we have to go through,' said Allen, who said a decision should be made within a few weeks. 'Windsor, in our estimation, is one of the premier destinations for any import coming to the CHL.

Paul Skenes dazzles in his first start since the All-Star Game as the Pirates blank the Tigers 3-0
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes allowed three hits over six efficient innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Monday night. Skenes (5-8), who last week became the first pitcher to start the All-Star game in each of the first two years of his career, struck out six, walked one and a hit batter to pick up his first victory since late May. The 23-year-old lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.91 as Pittsburgh responded from a weekend sweep at home by the lowly Chicago White Sox by keeping the team that entered Monday with the best record in the majors in check. The Pirates did enough against Jack Flaherty (5-10) to give Skenes a bit of breathing room, a rarity during Pittsburgh's frustrating season. Detroit's Skubal making a bid for a Cy Young repeat. He'd be the first in AL to do that since 2000
It's been a quarter century since an American League pitcher won back-to-back Cy Young Awards. It takes a pretty special pitcher to pull that off — but Tarik Skubal fits the bill. Skubal showed why he's the favorite to win the Cy Young for a second straight year, striking out 11 with no walks Sunday night in Detroit's 2-1 victory over Texas. If the Cy Young indeed goes to him, he'll be the first AL pitcher to earn it in back-to-back seasons since Pedro Martinez's remarkable stretch with the Red Sox in 1999 and 2000. Roger Clemens won consecutive Cy Youngs on two different occasions (1986-87 and 1997-98), and Jim Palmer did it in 1975 and '76. Those are the only AL pitchers besides Martinez to pull that off. It's been a bit more common in the National League: Greg Maddux (1992-95) and Randy Johnson (1999-2002) both won four straight, and Tim Lincecum (2008-09), Clayton Kershaw (2013-14), Max Scherzer (2016-17) and Jacob deGrom (2018-19) are in the two-in-a-row club. National Leaguer Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young in 1965 and 1966, back when there was only one award for both leagues. Only three times has a league had back-to-back winners of both its MVP and Cy Young — and all three times it happened in the NL. Albert Pujols was MVP and Lincecum won the Cy Young in 2008 and 2009. Barry Bonds was MVP in 2001 and 2002 while Johnson was winning the Cy Young — and Bonds was also MVP in 1992 and 1993 while Maddux was taking Cy Young honors. Skubal twirls gem and Vierling lifts Tigers over Rangers 2-1 to stop 6-game slide
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Sunday night. Vierling's base hit up the middle off Chris Martin (1-6) scored Gleyber Torres after the Rangers finally got something going against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh. Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in last Tuesday's All-Star Game, was cruising with a two-hit shutout going into the seventh. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton (5-3). Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs for his 16th save. Skubal struck out 11 and walked none on 105 pitches in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. Zach McKinstry singled home Wenceel Pérez in the second for Detroit's first run. Texas left-hander Jacob Latz allowed six hits and two walks over five innings in his third start this year and the fourth of his 72 big league appearances. Latz pitched in place of Nathan Eovaldi, who reported back tightness Saturday. Corey Seager, the lone left-handed batter in the starting lineup against the left-handed Skubal, had the first two hits off him.
