Stellantis recalls 636,000 units over diesel engine
Produced between 2017 and 2023, the models concerned have experienced problems with the timing chain that synchronises the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
Overall, 636,000 vehicles will be gradually recalled in France and still more in European countries affected.
The small 1.5 BlueHDI engine (called 'DV5') powers dozens of popular models, including the Citroen C3, C4, Opel Corsa, Mokka, and Peugeot 208, 2008, and 308.
Owners of those vehicles have expressed concern at issues including engine knocking or chirping sounds which could lead to broken valves or actual engine failure.
The manufacturer will be contacting affected owners.
When the vehicle arrives at the dealership an app can analyse the extent of the problem and see if parts should be replaced if premature wear is diagnosed.
Stellantis has extended the warranty on units affected to ten years or 240,000 kilometres (140,000 miles), the group said.
Customers who have had timing chain problems will be able to claim compensation for related expenses, Stellantis said, 'provided that the vehicle's maintenance and diagnostics follow the brand's recommended guidelines.'
The issue is the latest in a number of recent reliability issues to hit Stellantis. The group's new CEO, Antonio Filosa, has made vehicle quality a top priority. – AFP

Massive DC investments shield construction sector from AI export risks
RHB's top picks for the construction sector include Gamuda (GAM), Sunway Construction (SCGB) and Binastra. US President Donald Trump's administration via a draft rule plans to restrict shipments of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to Malaysia and Thailand. This is part of an effort to crack down on suspected activities of chips being smuggled into China. However, the rule is not yet finalised, and could still change. One provision under the draft rule would allow firms headquartered in the US and a few dozen friendly nations to continue shipping AI chips to both countries, without seeking a license, for a few months after the rule is published, according to media sources. The licence requirements would still include certain exemptions to prevent supply chain disruptions. Therefore, US-based tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Oracle, EdgeConneX and Amazon Web Services may continue their planned investments in Malaysia, which entails data centre (DC) setups. We also do not discount the possibility of some form of validated end user (VEU) status (similar to former US president Joe Biden's AI diffusion rule) to be obtained by US tech giants and allies which enables them to ship AI chips more freely to countries like Malaysia, given their massive planned investments in the country. However, VEU status holders may also then be subject to stringent security requirements, eg supply chain security including personnel checking and transit security. These 'friendly nations' may be countries previously listed under Tier 1, under the US AI diffusion rule proposed by the previous US administration. Some of the countries include the UK, the Netherlands, Australia and Japan. Key non-US DC players currently expanding in Malaysia include Yondr, Vantage, AirTrunk and NextDC. GAM, SCGB and IJM mainly have their DC jobs coming from either US-based corporations, or DC players from countries that could be deemed as friendly by the US, in our view. In fact, the near-term DC job pipeline is dominated by US-backed MNCs. For instance, there are some DC tenders, with outcomes expected to be known over July-September. The said tenders are related to Elmina Business Park Phase 2, and Eco Business Park V at Puncak Alam. Based on our estimates, there could be a potential construction value worth MYR7.4bn from the five DC tenders. Other DC hotspots include Negeri Sembilan – one in Port Dickson via a 389- acre piece of land (acquired from GAM) developed by PCM and another plot in Nilai that is said to be backed by a US investor, according to the Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan. The 389-acre land could likely house between 500MW and 700MW of DC capacity based on our analysis. Key downside risks to our sector call now include an unexpected slowdown in DC builds from US-based DC developers in Malaysia. —July 7, 2025 Main image: Freepik

Airbus Helicopters inks two MoUs with Malaysian aerospace, defence players
(Front) Dubrule and Nonee pose for photographs during the signing ceremony. KUCHING (July 7): Airbus Helicopters is collaborating with key players in the Malaysian aerospace and defence sectors to foster industrial cooperation in aerospace technologies and enhance military helicopter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. This follows two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin's official visit to France, underscoring shared commitment of both parties to innovation and regional security, said Airbus in a statement today. Under the first MoU, Airbus Helicopters and the Coalition of Defence Industry (CDI) Malaysia plan to pursue industrial opportunities with the latter's member companies specialising in aerospace and defence development. This MoU marks the first of its kind between Airbus and the Malaysian defence industry, establishing a dedicated framework to drive military helicopter innovations, growth, and development in the local defence sector, said Airbus. Under the second MoU, Airbus Helicopters will partner with local MRO service provider Global Turbine Asia (GTA) to advance in-country helicopter component MRO capabilities. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen Malaysia's defence ecosystem and accelerate industrial growth in alignment with the nation's plans to acquire new helicopters for its armed forces and related governmental agencies. CDI (M) president and GTA executive chair Datuk Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi said they look forward to deepening the collaboration with major European industries, building on the Malaysian aerospace industry's enduring partnerships with leaders such as Airbus. 'We are committed to reinforcing these relationships and exploring new areas of cooperation, ensuring sustained innovation, growth, and long-term value for all stakeholders,' she said. Airbus Helicopters head of Asia-Pacific Vincent Dubrule said these partnerships underscore Airbus' strong commitment to Malaysia's long-term goal of building a resilient, self-reliant defence ecosystem. By deepening local industrial growth and expanding MRO capabilities, he said they are strengthening the nation's aerospace and defence sectors, supporting technological advancement, and enabling greater industrial sovereignty. 'As Malaysia looks to acquire helicopters for key missions like tactical support, combat search-and-rescue and anti-surface warfare, these partnerships aim to strengthen local expertise, promote technology transfer and build autonomy. 'Airbus sees CDI (M) and GTA as trusted partners aligned to advance these priorities,' added Dubrule.
