Land for jobs ‘corruption' case: CBI ‘cherry picking' to target Lalu family, argues lawyer in court
Lalu and his family have been accused by the CBI of enabling the recruitment of candidates for Group D railway substitute jobs who had allegedly transferred them land parcels as a quid pro quo.
'They're trying to dig deep to open all threads against the family… They're trying to link their names somehow,' argued Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, who is representing Lalu's daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav. Singh was accompanied in court by advocate Aekta Vats.
'The land sales were years apart from the dates when the jobs were given… How can the CBI connect the two,' he argued before Special Judge Vishal Gogne of Rouse Avenue Courts. 'In three days, the Pacific Ocean changed due to the tsunami… multiple years is a long long time to wait.'
'This case seems to be the interpretation of one gentleman who sits in a room determined to point out that something was wrong,' the advocate said.
'The CBI has said there were no requirements for the jobs and that there was no urgency… Has any (land) seller ever told them they were under pressure from Lalu Prasad,' Singh asked the court.
Singh also said while there were 103 accused persons in the case, there was a mention of just 12 land parcels in the chargesheets.
Earlier last month, the CBI which was represented in court by Senior Advocate and Special Public Prosecutor D P Singh and Advocate Manu Mishra, had argued that Lalu had threatened Railway Ministry officials to speed up the recruitment process.
The CBI case pertains to the alleged transfer of land at cheap rates to the RJD chief and his family in return for appointments made in Group-D substitute jobs in the Central Railways between 2004 and 2009, when Lalu was the Railway Minister.
In its multiple chargesheets, the CBI has claimed that there were several discrepancies in the documents furnished by those who were given jobs in exchange for land such as candidates having sequential roll numbers on their caste and residence certificates.
As per the CBI, Lalu had earlier acquired over 1 lakh square feet of land for only Rs 26 lakh as against the circle rate of over Rs 4.39 crore.

‘Bhoomipujan' for facelift of Raxaul rly station performed
Motihari: Raxaul railway station under East Central Railway (ECR), located near India-Nepal border in the Darbhanga-Narkatiyaganj section, is set to get a facelift at a cost of Rs 54 crore in the first phase under the Amrit Bharat scheme. Once developed, the station will resemble a replica of the famous Pashupati Nath Mahadeo temple of Kathmandu. The foundation stone for remodelling of the station was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After performing the 'bhoomipujan' of the project on Saturday, Sanjay Jaiswal, MP, said the new station building will be four storeyed and will have four domes like the Pashupati Nath temple. He said the station will have facilities for foreign travellers too. A state-of-the-art railway yard will also be built on the station premises. Jaiswal expressed hope that after remodelling of the station, trade and movement between India and Nepal will further improve. Divisional railway manager (DRM) of Samastipur rail division, Vinay Srivastav, said the station will have entrances on both the north and south sides, which will facilitate movement of passengers from Nepal. The DPR of the station has already been prepared, and a contractor has been appointed for carrying out the remodelling work. Prajwal Revanna, former JD(S) MP, given life sentence in rape case
Bengaluru: A Special Court here on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment, former MP and suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna in a rape case. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of Rs 10 lakh on the accused. The court had on Friday convicted the 34-year-old in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him and reserved the sentencing for Saturday. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice — at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence– in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. Earlier in the day, while the prosecution sought life sentence for Revanna, the 34 year-old sought leniency, claiming he did nothing wrong and that his only mistake was his 'fast' growth in politics. He broke down in court as he appealed to the judge for a lesser punishment. He told the court that he is a BE Mechanical graduate, and has always passed on merit. '…they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)…the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them give a complaint,' Prajwal told the court. Pointing out that the woman (victim) had not complained to anyone including her husband or kin about the alleged rape, he said that she comes and gives complaint when certain videos were circulated. Stating that he will bow down to the court's conviction, Prajwal said, 'I have a family, I have not seen my mother and father for six months now…..please give me a less sentence is what I request the court.' 'The only mistake I made in my life is growing fast in politics,' Prajwal, arrested in May last year upon his arrival from Germany, told the court. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the case had filed a 1,632-page charge sheet with 113 witnesses in the case in September, 2024. Revanna was booked under sections 376(2)(k) (being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, commits rape on such woman), 376 (2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the IT Act. Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Nayak and Additional SPP B N Jagadeesha following Prajwal Revanna's conviction on Friday had said that the court had accepted the prosecution's case and convicted him on all counts. Noting that the prosecution examined 26 witnesses and marked 180 documents and the main evidence is of the victim, Nayak said the prosecution relied not only on the oral evidence, but also the digital and technical evidence, DNA report and Forensic Sciences Laboratory report. 'The clothes that were worn by the victim during the rape were also identified and the Investigation Officer (IO) was successful in seizing them even after three-four years. Also, digital evidence played a role as the accused himself had recorded the video.' Four separate cases have been registered against Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual harassment, and the SIT was tasked with probing cases. Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD (S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda. The cases came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26, 2024. Revanna was arrested by the SIT on May 31 last year, upon his arrival at Bengaluru Airport from Germany in connection with a case registered at the Holenarasipura Town Police Station. Revanna had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. JD(S) suspended him from the party following the cases filed against him.

Tejashwi Yadav Alleges Voter List Omission; ECI, Patna DM Refute Claim
Days after the Election Commission of India completed its month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and released the draft electoral rolls for Bihar in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on Saturday, alleged that his name was missing from the voter list. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has refuted his claim. Tejashwi Yadav claimed that he couldn't find EPIC number RAXXXXX120 in the Digha Assembly Constituency in the draft Special Intensive Revision (SIR) published on August 1. However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) stated that the RJD leader's name is indeed included in the draft SIR for Digha. ECI records show that Tejashwi Yadav is registered with a different EPIC number—RAXXXXX228. According to media reports, ECI sources confirmed that Tejashwi Yadav had submitted the EPIC number ending in 228 in his election affidavit. Meanwhile, responding to the allegation made by the RJD leader, Patna District Magistrate Dr. Thiyagarajan SM stated that the name is still listed at the same booth where he previously voted. "It is available in the public domain. Everyone can see it," he added. "Want to say very clearly that all the voters of Patna district are requested to have some patience. You can see your name in the draft by your name or EPIC number," he further added.
