HANOI : Investment in a planned Trump Tower in Vietnam is estimated at around US$1 billion and construction of the at least 60-storey skyscraper could start next year, a person familiar with the discussions told Reuters.
The building, for which plans are still preliminary, would be the second major project the Trump Organization, US President Donald Trump's family business, is reviewing in Vietnam. The Southeast Asian country is currently in trade talks with Washington to avoid crippling 46% tariffs.
Eric Trump, senior vice president of the Trump Organization, visited Vietnam last week to survey the site for the tower in the country's southern business hub of Ho Chi Minh City and to attend the groundbreaking for a golf resort in northern Vietnam. The approval for the golf club, according to prime minister Pham Minh Chinh, had been expedited by the authorities.
The Trump Organization would operate the golf club, while its Vietnamese partner, real estate firm Kinhbac City, would focus on developing it with an estimated investment of US$1.5 billion, the source said. The division of work had not been previously reported.
A similar arrangement is likely to be agreed for the Trump Tower, with the investment expected to come mostly from local partners, the source said, declining to be named because the information is not public.
The Trump Organization did not reply to a request for comment.
Kinhbac City, a leading industrial real estate developer in Vietnam, did not respond to a request for comment.
When it announced its collaboration with the Trump Organization in October, the company said the venture 'will focus on developing 5-star hotels, championship-style golf courses, and luxurious residential estates and unparalleled amenities in Vietnam'.
During his visit last week, Eric Trump toured the site where the skyscraper would be built and met local officials, the source said. That was in line with the schedule of his engagements with the city's authorities, according to a Vietnamese document seen by Reuters.
The tower would be built in Thu Thiem, an area under development in central Ho Chi Minh City where a new financial centre is planned to be built, the document from the city's authorities showed.
Envy of all of Asia
At the groundbreaking for the golf resort, Eric Trump said the projects to be developed in Vietnam would be 'the envy of all of Asia and of the entire world', adding he would visit the country frequently to further the company's plans.
Approvals for the tower project are still being sought and no final decision had been made about when construction will start, the source said, adding that the aim was to have the groundbreaking next year.
The investment could be larger than US$1 billion if permits are obtained for a building with more than 60 floors, the person said.
The Trump Organization operates several towers in the US and across the world, but does not own all of them.
The flagship Trump Tower in the Manhattan neighbourhood of New York City was built in the 1980s. Others have since been built in Chicago, Florida and abroad, including in Turkey and the Philippines.

Vietnamese stocks near record on reform hopes, trade deal optimism

Foreign investors bought US$411 million of Vietnamese shares on a net basis in July, the second month of inflows this year. (EPA Images pic) HANOI : Vietnam's stock benchmark is closing in on a record high, fueled by optimism over sweeping political reforms and clarity on a trade deal with the US. The government is undertaking its biggest administrative overhaul in decades to shrink bureaucracy as Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh pushes for more than 8% economic growth this year. A trade deal that cut US tariffs on the nation's goods to 20% from 46% in April also clears an overhang for the market. The moves have driven a 19% rally in the Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Stock Index this year, putting the market well ahead of its Southeast Asian peers. More gains could follow if Vietnam secures an upgrade to emerging-market status by FTSE Russell. 'Never before have we seen such strong reforms in Vietnam,' said Tyler Manh Dung Nguyen, chief market strategist at Ho Chi Minh City Securities Corp. 'I would allocate more in Vietnam right at the beginning of these changes,' he said. The government is cutting red tape and unnecessary costs to redirect funds to development projects, part of its aim to achieve high-income status by 2045. Its pro-growth policies are luring investors back to the country, reversing sentiment after global funds withdrew a net US$3.18 billion from local stocks last year. Foreign investors bought US$411 million of Vietnamese shares on a net basis in July, the second month of inflows this year, while selling their holdings in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Conglomerate Vingroup JSC, lender Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade and Hoa Phat Group JSC are among the biggest gainers on the index this year as investors bet on major beneficiaries of the country's strong growth. The economy expanded 7.52% in the six months through June, according to Vietnam's statistics office, supported by a surge in manufacturing as foreign buyers raced to avoid higher tariffs on sales to the US. 'We became more positive since May as valuations started to look compelling given the forecast earnings growth of about 15% and price-earnings multiples of 10 times in 2026,' said Christopher Leow, CEO at Principal Asset Management in Singapore. Investors are expecting a FTSE reclassification of Vietnam's market to take place as soon as September, which the index compiler projects may draw up to US$6 billion in capital inflows. That would give another boost to the benchmark, which is less than 2% away from its all-time high in January 2022. To be clear, Vietnam's growth outlook remains clouded by a potential slowdown in global growth in the second half of the year. Uncertainty over a 40% US tariff on goods deemed to be transshipped through the Southeast Asian nation also weighs on local businesses. Still, the bullish case for Vietnam is hard to ignore. 'What makes Vietnam stand out globally is that it's almost inconceivable it won't become a much bigger economy' and returns on invested capital are much higher than in many other countries, said Johannes Loefstrand, portfolio manager at T Rowe Price who manages a frontier markets fund with its largest allocation in Vietnam.

Employers must observe extra Malaysia Day holiday, says HR minister

PUTRAJAYA, July 23 — Employers must comply with the declaration of Sept 15 as an additional public holiday in conjunction with this year's Malaysia Day celebration, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong. He said employers could observe the additional public holiday and pay the regular salary, or instruct their employees to work and pay according to the public holiday rates. 'Employers can also opt to give a replacement holiday on another day if their employees are required to work on that public holiday. 'To ensure the implementation of the additional public holiday is fair and organised, the Department of Labour (JTK) is prepared to provide advisory services as well as answer any queries from employers and employees regarding the implementation of this additional public holiday,' he said in a statement today. Sim said the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) welcomes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that Sept 15 will be designated as an additional public holiday in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration. 'This announcement is good news for workers in the public and private sectors nationwide. 'This additional holiday allows all Malaysians to celebrate unity, strengthen the spirit of nationalism and appreciate the uniqueness of the formation of Malaysia as a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural country,' he said. Sim also called on Malaysians to use the long holiday for recreation, thus promoting well-being among workers and stimulating economic activities, which in turn will have a positive impact on the local economy. The implementation of the additional holiday is subject to provisions under Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955 (Act 265) for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan; the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Chapter 67), the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76) and the Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369) as the basis for the announcement of the official additional holiday by the Government. Laos and Australia deepen investment and development ties

VIENTIANE: Laos and Australia are stepping up efforts and reaffirming their commitment to boost trade, investment, and sustainable development, with several Australian companies already having a strong presence in Laos. Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Board of Investment, Saleumxay Kommasith, met Australian Ambassador to Laos, Megan Jones, on Tuesday (July 22) to discuss the growing commercial partnership, according to the Australian Embassy. The meeting focused on opportunities under 'Invested: Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040', which outlines key sectors for investment in Laos. 'Under Invested we have identified three key sectors as areas with the most opportunities for Australian investment: agriculture, green energy, and resources,' Ambassador Jones said. Trade and investment between the two nations have seen solid progress in recent years, driven by long-term cooperation and new initiatives. In June, the two governments launched the Laos-Australia Investment Facilitation and Transformation for Economic Resilience (LIFT 4 Laos) programme. It is designed to help Laos attract high-quality foreign investment, boost sustainable growth, and improve resilience to economic shocks. Australian businesses are already making a visible impact on the ground. In March, Australia's largest horticulture company, Costa Group, began developing a blueberry farm in Champasak province, which is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs. Earlier this year, Sydney-based asset manager New Forests acquired a majority stake in Burapha Agro-Forestry. The company's focus on reforestation and carbon credit generation supports both environmental goals and local development. In the logistics sector, Linfox signed a contract in 2024 with Carlsberg/Lao Brewery Company to transport products in Huaphan, Phongsaly and Vientiane provinces. This followed an earlier deal in July to provide forklifts to the company's warehouses. Australia has also maintained a long-standing presence in the mining sector. Australian Laboratory Services, known for its geochemical testing expertise, is celebrating 30 years of operations in Laos this year. Agriculture remains a strong pillar of cooperation, with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research supporting Laos for more than 35 years through research and capacity-building projects. The Laos-Australia Sustainable Energy Partnership is also moving forward, with Phase 2 of the programme scheduled to begin in 2026. Last year, Laos' Prime Minister Dr Sonexay Siphandone and the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, signed an agreement to elevate bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership. This agreement reflects growing cooperation in foreign policy, education, infrastructure, health, security, economics, and development. Australia and Laos have shared diplomatic ties since the 1950s, building a relationship that both sides continue to value and strengthen. During the meeting, Ambassador Jones congratulated Saleumxay on his new role, saying his leadership would play a key part in driving economic cooperation. Looking ahead, AustCham Lao, the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Laos, will mark its 20th anniversary in 2025. It is the country's oldest foreign chamber and represents a broad network of businesses operating in Laos or trading with Australia. - Vientiane Times/ANN
