Najeeb Ahmed case to be closed: Missing JNU student's mother vows to fight till her 'last breath'; slams CBI for negligence
Fatima Nafis, the mother of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student
Najeeb Ahmed
, on Tuesday accused the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and
Delhi Police
of "negligence" after a Delhi court
allowed
the CBI to close the case of her son, who has been missing since October 2016.
In a Facebook post, his mother said she would "fight till my last breath."
"It's been (almost) nine years since my Najeeb went missing. But the negligence shown by Delhi Police and the CBI from the very first day has led to this moment," Nafis wrote in her post.
Asserting that her fight is for every woman who is seeking justice for their children, the woman added that she would approach higher courts too, if needed.
"Many times I ask myself — how can I give up hope? How can I let my courage break? He is my son after all.
I want my son back. If I have to go to every court in this country for that, I will. I will fight till my last breath," she said.
Nafis further alleged that no action was taken against the "goons" of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS is the ideological parent of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which leads the government at the Centre.
"Neither Delhi Police nor CBI arrested or took any action against the ABVP-linked students, the goons who assaulted my son and then made him disappear," she charged.
Ahmed, a first-year student, went missing from JNU's Mahi-Mandvi hostel on October 15, 2016, after a scuffle with some students allegedly affiliated with the ABVP the previous night.
The case was initially probed by Delhi Police and later transferred to the CBI.
Nafis, who was at the forefront of protests along with JNU students to demand a fair probe in her son's case, praised those who stood with her.
"Their solidarity and this shared struggle give me strength.
Throughout this time, when the system tried to silence us, it was students from JNU and from across the country — from colleges and universities like Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia — who stood with me. These very children faced police batons on roads and raised their voices for us," she stated.
The CBI filed its closure report on Monday, after permission from the Delhi high court. However, it had closed its investigation back in October 2018 as its efforts to trace Ahmed did not yield any result.
Also, though she accepted the closure report, additional chief judicial magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari granted liberty to the agency to reopen the investigation on the receipt of any credible information on Ahmed's whereabouts, and intimate her accordingly.

TVK leader Vijay slams CM Stalin, BJP in first-ever political protest over custodial deaths
CHENNAI: Taking part in a public demonstration for the first time since his plunge into politics, TVK founder and actor Vijay on Sunday targeted DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the alleged custodial deaths that have occurred during his four-year rule. Criticising Stalin for referring the investigation into the death of Ajithkumar, a temple security guard in Madappuram in Sivaganga district, to the CBI, the TVK leader charged Stalin with taking shelter behind the BJP-led Union government. Hitting out at the BJP, Vijay said, 'The CBI continues to be a puppet in the hands of the RSS and the BJP. Why are you hiding yourselves behind them by ordering a CBI probe into Ajithkumar's death?' Taking a dig at Stalin, who said 'sorry' to the family of Ajithkumar, Vijay asked, 'You said sorry to Ajithkumar's family. Nothing wrong with that. But under your four-year rule, 24 persons have lost their lives while in police custody. Did you say 'sorry' to those families? Did you grant compensation to them? Please say 'sorry' to them too and announce compensation.'

Surrey mayor's call to Meta, X, TikTok after shooting at Kap's Cafe: ‘Don't let criminals weaponise you'
The incident occurred during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday at Kap's Café that opened last weekend in Surrey, British Columbia. Unverified videos circulating on social media show armed individuals firing at the establishment. Her call came after a shooting at TV host Kapil Sharma's newly opened café in Canada, followed by the disturbing circulation of the attack video online. New Delhi: Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has slammed major social media platforms, including Meta, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and others, to take immediate and decisive action against the online glorification of violent crime. 'A recent shooting at a local business was brazenly filmed and posted online by an individual claiming responsibility. This act was meant not only to harm its direct victim but to terrorize our whole community,' Mayor Locke said in a public statement 11 July. Shortly after the attack, a man identifying himself as Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting in a Facebook post. Laddi is a known member of the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and is listed among India's most wanted individuals by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). 'A recent shooting at a local business was brazenly filmed and posted online by an individual claiming responsibility. This act was meant not only to harm its direct victim but to terrorize our whole community. That fear is real,' said Locke. The Surrey mayor also mentioned that she visited the scene after the incident and spoke with employees and people in the area. 'I felt it first-hand last night while visiting Kap's Cafe and nearby businesses and speaking with employees and customers who now worry about their safety. A place that should have been filled with buzz and excitement about the establishment was instead overtaken by fear and unease,' she added in her public statement. Role of social media Mayor Locke also criticised the role of tech platforms in allowing violent content to flourish: 'It is intolerable that legitimate news content is sometimes blocked, while videos glorifying violent crime circulate freely,' she said. In a strong message, she called on tech companies to do more: 'I am calling on Meta, X, TikTok, and other social platforms to stop allowing violent criminals to weaponize your networks against the people of Surrey.' In the purported post Thursday, Laddi while claiming responsibility cited some remarks made in 'The Kapil Sharma Show', as the motive behind the attack. The post mentions that a character in the show had made certain remarks on Nihang Sikhs. The post claims that Laddi tried contacting Sharma's manager about it but the calls went unanswered. After the incident, Surrey Police issued a statement that no one at the business was injured, and that SPS officers gathered evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage. Mayor Locke outlined specific and urgent steps that social media companies must take to immediately stop the promotion of violent content. She emphasised the need to permanently ban accounts linked to criminal organizations, promptly remove all content that promotes or glorifies violent crime, and implement real-time detection tools to prevent dangerous videos from going viral. 'These steps are neither optional nor aspirational; they are essential,' she said.
