TVK leader Vijay slams CM Stalin, BJP in first-ever political protest over custodial deaths
Criticising Stalin for referring the investigation into the death of Ajithkumar, a temple security guard in Madappuram in Sivaganga district, to the CBI, the TVK leader charged Stalin with taking shelter behind the BJP-led Union government.
Hitting out at the BJP, Vijay said, 'The CBI continues to be a puppet in the hands of the RSS and the BJP. Why are you hiding yourselves behind them by ordering a CBI probe into Ajithkumar's death?'
Taking a dig at Stalin, who said 'sorry' to the family of Ajithkumar, Vijay asked, 'You said sorry to Ajithkumar's family. Nothing wrong with that. But under your four-year rule, 24 persons have lost their lives while in police custody. Did you say 'sorry' to those families? Did you grant compensation to them? Please say 'sorry' to them too and announce compensation.'

Amid criticisms of targeted eviction from government lands, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sniffed a conspiracy behind people with their roots in present-day Bangladesh travelling miles to settle in areas dominated by 'Hindus or Assamese Muslims'. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Assam has been carrying out a series of eviction drives since June. Some 3,500 families, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims, have been evicted from reserve forests and wetlands so far. They are said to have encroached upon government-owned lands after being displaced by riverbank erosion across the State. 'Why are they moving to places 200-300 km from their native places to where Hindus or Assamese Muslims live? Our people are suffering from insecurity as a result. This is an issue beyond eviction; there is a hidden conspiracy to make us a minority,' the Chief Minister said after an eviction drive in the Goalpara district on Saturday (July 12, 2025). Asserting that the demographic balance in Assam was being threatened due to such migration of people, he said the phenomenon needs to be investigated to find out whether it is poverty-driven or a conspiracy with political leaders behind it. 'During an eviction in Lakhimpur (northeastern Assam), we found that the encroachers were from South Salmara (western Assam) and Sribhumi (southern Assam). If I am landless, will I not look for land in my district?' Mr. Sarma said. Citing the example of the Sarupathar constituency in eastern Assam's Golaghat district, he claimed that people from Dhing and Rupohi in central Assam's Nagaon district settled there in large numbers to change the demographic pattern. Last week, the State government carried out two major eviction drives in the Dhubri and Goalpara districts to clear more than 4,500 bighas (1,485 acres) of encroached land, including reserve forests. More than 2.64 lakh acres of government land were under encroachment across the State, Mr. Sarma said. 'We don't like carrying out eviction drives and pushing people out. But the Supreme Court and the (Gauhati) High Court have given strict orders that forest land, VGR (Village Grazing Reserve), and PGR (Professional Grazing Reserve) land should not be encroached upon,' he told journalists in Darrang district. The eviction drives would continue until government lands were freed from encroachers, he said. Data tabled by Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in the Assembly in March showed people of the State had been encroaching upon more than 2.5 lakh hectares of forest land, followed by encroachment by neighbouring States on 83,000 hectares, and by tea gardens on over 1,000 hectares. Cry of discrimination Opposition parties, including the Congress, said migrant Muslims were being targeted primarily to create space for power and industrial projects by corporate bigwigs close to the BJP's central leadership. They also alleged a design to polarise the State ahead of the Assembly election, to be held by May 2025. Criticising the eviction drives, the Congress promised compensation for all Indian citizens whose houses had been bulldozed, if it came to power in Assam. The Jamaat Ulama Council slammed the 'discriminatory' eviction drives, which it said affected the Muslims disproportionately. It called for an immediate halt to such 'unjust' measures. On Saturday (July 13, 2025), the All Assam Minority Students' Union organised Statewide protests condemning the 'inhuman' eviction drives that it said displaced thousands of poor and marginalised families across the State. The union also submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through district officials, seeking his intervention to stop the 'anti-people' actions.

Nitish Kumar promises jobs, employment for one crore people in five years
Ahead of the State Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday (July 13, 2025) promised to provide jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youth in five years (2025-2030). Making the announcement on social media platform X, he claimed that between 2005 and 2020, over eight lakh youth in the State were provided with government jobs. 'For the next five years (2025 to 2030), we are setting a target to double the goal by providing government jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youth. To achieve this, new job and employment opportunities will also be created in the private sector, particularly in industrial areas,' Mr. Kumar said in the post. 'University for skill development' The Chief Minister also said that a university will be established for skill development, which will be named Jananayak Karpoori Thakur Skill University in honour of Bihar's pride so that the youth of the State can find a new direction in skill development. The icon of Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), Mr. Thakur was awarded India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna posthumously on January 26, 2024. Mr. Kumar added that it has been the vision of his government since the beginning to ensure that more and more youth in the State receive government jobs and employment opportunities. 'To further accelerate the pace of providing government jobs and employment to the youth of the State, in 2020, under the good governance programme, Saat Nischay-2 was launched, under which we resolved to provide government jobs to 10 lakh youth and employment to 10 lakh people,' Mr. Kumar said. He said the target was later increased to provide government jobs to 12 lakh youth and employment to 38 lakh people by August 2025, setting a total target of 50 lakh jobs/employment opportunities. 'I am delighted to share that, so far, over 10 lakh youth in the State have been provided with government jobs, and approximately 39 lakh people have been given employment, and the target of providing government jobs/employment to over 50 lakh youth will certainly be achieved,' Mr. Kumar said.

An honour for Kerala too, says Sadanandan
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader C. Sadanandan, 61, a retired teacher from Kannur and a survivor of brutal political attack in the 1990s, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha under Article 80(3) of the Constitution, which allows the President to nominate individuals with expertise in education, social service, and other key sectors. Mr. Sadanandan told mediapersons in Kannur on Sunday that the proposal was part of the BJP's efforts to implement its slogan of a 'developed Kerala'. 'The party has high hopes for Kerala. This proposal is a step towards fulfilling those hopes,' he said, describing it as not only a personal honour but also a recognition for the State. He said the BJP Central leadership had always bestowed 'special attention' on Kerala regardless of its electoral success in the State. Modi's call Mr. Sadanandan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called him two days ago. 'He said the party would delegate me a task. I found out about it only this morning,' he added. He said the BJP's Central approach was not hindered by electoral losses in Kerala. 'That is not seen as a big issue or obstacle. Policies are being formulated for Kerala's development,' he said. Mr. Sadanandan, a native of Perincheri, was a teacher at Sree Durga Vilasam Higher Secondary School in Thrissur. He began his teaching career at Kuzhikkal Lower Primary School and was also as subeditor of Janmabhoomi and an announcer at All India Radio. His social engagements began at the age of 17 through Nehru Yuva Kendra and continued through organisations such as Bharatiya Vichara Kendra and Sri Parvathi Jana Seva Samithi. He also served as the State president of the Desiya Adhyapaka Parishad and Chief Editor of Desiya Adhyapaka Vartha for 15 years. Double amputee At the age of 30, Mr. Sadanandan underwent double amputation below the knees, following an attack allegedly perpetrated by CPI(M) workers in 1994. He continues to remain active in public life using prosthetic limbs. Mr. Sadanandan's elevation to the Raja Sabha is seen within BJP circle as a strategic move to energise the party base in Kerala while honouring a lifetime of ideological commitment and public service.
