CM Fadnavis Should Apologise: MVA After SIT Clears Aaditya Thackeray In Disha Salian Case

India.com6 hours ago
New Delhi: Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday strongly criticised the ruling Mahayuti alliance and called for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a Special Investigation Team's (SIT) submission to the Bombay High Court stating there was no foul play in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of maligning Aaditya Thackeray with baseless allegations linking him to Salian's death. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'Devendra Fadnavis must apologise. If the police have concluded it was a suicide, BJP leaders and even Eknath Shinde should apologise for defaming Aaditya Thackeray.'

Senior NCP leader Eknath Khadse echoed Raut's condemnation, accusing the BJP of exploiting the case for political gains. 'They levelled baseless allegations against Aaditya Thackeray and played dirty politics over the death of a woman,' Khadse told ANI.
Earlier, Mumbai Police told ANI, "So far, the findings of the SIT pertaining to the circumstances that caused deceased Disha Salian's death are coherent with the findings of the earlier investigation officer of the said case. However, further investigation is still being carried out by the SIT."
Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 14th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. Her death had sparked widespread conspiracy theories and political disputes within Maharashtra.
Salian's father, Satish Salian, has repeatedly claimed that his daughter was gangraped and murdered. However, the Mumbai Police's affidavit submitted to the Bombay High Court rejected these claims, stating there was no evidence of sexual or physical assault.
The police affidavit, filed by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Malvani Police Station, indicated that Salian died by suicide, jumping from her apartment window of her own volition. It cited that she was under 'tremendous mental stress' due to family disputes and failed business ventures, and was inebriated at the time of her death. Her fiancé, who was present on the night of the incident, also ruled out any foul play.
In March, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a First Information Report (FIR) against Aaditya Thackeray. Subsequently, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded Thackeray's resignation and criminal action against him.
Aaditya Thackeray has challenged the petition, terming it 'false, frivolous, and motivated' and has sought a hearing before any orders are passed.
The Bombay High Court is yet to decide on Satish Salian's plea for a CBI investigation.

WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. Rioters were seen in video clips looting an outlet of a retail chain. Police had reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas after vehicles were torched, shops looted, and policemen attacked. 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.' Banerjee urged the home minister to launch large-scale awareness campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour, alongside sensitisation programmes, digital literacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives. 'This is a collective challenge requiring urgent and coordinated action to safeguard public order, national unity, and the integrity of our democracy,' the Trinamool Congress posted on X.

Poll panel urges voters to join roll revision amid oppn flak

Patna: Amid mounting opposition protests over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, the Election Commission on Thursday made a direct appeal to the electorate to take active part in the exercise to ensure no eligible voter is excluded. The appeal came shortly after Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, sparked controversy by calling for a boycott of the drive. "I appeal to all citizens not to allow booth-level officers or any election officials into their villages since the SIR is nothing but a nautanki," Yadav wrote on social media. Urging people not to hand over any documents or details, he added, "Just serve them tea and water and see them off." His comments drew widespread backlash from netizens and sharp criticism from political parties. Reacting strongly, the BJP described the remarks as highly inflammatory and called on the EC to act. "This is a complete violation of EC guidelines. The EC must take cognisance of his remarks and act in the matter," BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma said. Calling Yadav's words dangerous for democracy, he added, "It was because of elections conducted by the same EC that he was able to become an MP." In a press release issued later in the day, the EC stated, "The Election Commission urges all eligible citizens in Bihar to participate actively in this special drive to ensure that no voter is left out." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! According to the EC, enumeration forms are being printed and distributed to 7.90 crore electors in Bihar, based on records as of June 23, 2025. A total of 77,895 booth level officers have been deployed with another 20,603 being appointed. These BLOs are delivering pre-filled forms door-to-door to all electors listed as of June 24, 2025, the date of the SIR order. The forms are to be filled and submitted by July 25, 2025 with nearly four lakh volunteers, including govt staff, NCC cadets and NSS members, assisting the elderly, sick, disabled, poor and other vulnerable voters. The completed forms will then be collected by BLOs along with self-attested documents, and the data uploaded daily via ECINET. The draft electoral roll will be published on Aug 1, after which people can file claims and objections. The final roll will be released on Sept 30 and both hard and digital copies will be shared free of cost with recognised political parties and published on the ECI website.
