Lily Allen Apologises To Katy Perry For ‘Mean' Space Trip Comment
Famous pop singer Katy Perry recently made headlines for her participation in the all-female space trip organised by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. The 11-minute space trip included notable women such as Lauren Sanchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, television host Gayle King, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist and scientist Amanda Nguyen.
While the space journey was hailed as historic by some, it also sparked criticism. Many celebrities criticised Katy and called her decision tasteless. Among them was actor and singer Lily Allen, who referred to the flight as 'out of touch," during an April 17 episode of her podcast Miss Me? 'I just think it's so out of touch. We're on the brink of recession, people are f–king struggling to make ends meet and get food on their table," Allen said.
But, in a turn of events, she publicly apologised during the April 28 episode of her podcast, calling her previous remarks a reflection of her 'own internalised misogyny." According to US Weekly, the apology came after her co-host, Miquita Oliver, mentioned Meghan Markle, prompting Lily to reflect on her comments.
'Because we're talking about a very famous female person who's a bit divisive, I would like to apologize for being mean about Katy Perry last week. There was actually no need for me to bring her name into it, and it was my own internalised misogyny," Lily Allen said. She further added, 'I've been thinking about it a lot, and it was just completely unnecessary to pile on with her. I do disagree with what it was that they did, but she wasn't the only person that did it. She was possibly the most famous and the one that divides people the most. There was something in me that decided to choose her as the person that should… Anyway, I just, I'm really sorry."
Allen apologised to Perry saying, 'I would have been hurt if it had been me and someone in my industry used me and my name. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Katy Perry, I know you don't listen to the show, but yeah, sorry."
While Allen took her comments back, she was not alone in her criticism about the all-female space tour. Celebrities like Joe Rogan, Jessica Chastain and Olivia Wilde also voiced concerns over the Blue Origin Space flight.
Following the backlash, Katy Perry reportedly experienced a dip in ticket sales for her Lifetimes Tour. During her April 23 concert in Mexico, she addressed the crowd, asking, 'Has anyone ever called your dreams crazy?"
