Killer inmates on America's harshest death row get rare privileges and incredible new perk

Some of America's death row inmates are getting a rare set of privileges which inmates say have "given guys hope".

Death row in Texas is considered one of the harshest in the nation. For decades inmates were subject to extreme isolation with many spending up to 22-hours a day in their cramped cells. But day-to-day life looks very differrent for some lucky inmates.

A prison program is granting some of Texas' most hardened criminals 'recreational time' for limited time periods each day. However, the rare set of privileges is only being offered to a select group of well-behaved prisoners on death row.

The program allows the selected prisoners to spend several hours a day outside their cells. The allowances include communal meals, TV time, prayer circles and - for the first time in decades - direct human contact.
Rodolfo 'Rudy' Alvarez Medrano, 45, is a death row inmate at Allan B. Polunsky Unit in West Livingston who has been chosen for the new program. He has been allowd out of solitary confinement and for the first time in two decades, he was allowed out of his death row cell without handcuffs.
He told the Houston Chronicle: "All of these changes have given guys hope." He explained how before the 'life-altering' new program, he was in isolation at least 22 hours a day.

Death row was in the Huntsville Unit from 1928 to 1999 but since a daring death row escape in 1998 prompted prison officials to move death row to a newer prison in Livingston in 1999.
The Polunsky Unit houses death row inmates separately in single-person cells, with each cell having a window. Death row inmates are also recreated individually. Inmates on death row receive a regular diet, and have access to reading, writing, and legal materials.
Depending upon their custody level, some death row inmates may have a radio. Inmates on death row do not have regular TDCJ-ID numbers; they have special death row numbers.

Following the attempted escape, restraints were tightened and inmates were thrown into solitary, lost their prison jobs and their access to rehabilitative programs was eliminated, reports MailOnline.
The pilot recreation program was launched under former warden Daniel Dickerson, as he believed offering basic privileges to well-behaved inmates would improve conditions for both prisoners and staff working there.

He said: "It's definitely helped give them something to look forward to. All it takes is one bad event, and that could shut it down for a long time. And they understand that because they've been behind those doors for so long - they know what they have to lose probably more than anybody else."
It seems the program is a huge success so far as in the 18 months since it began, officials say there have been no fights, no drug seizures, and no incidents requiring disciplinary action. Elsewhere across America many prisons are struggling with contraband and violence.
It has also had a huge impact on staff, who have reported fewer mental health breakdowns and better working conditions.

Serial killer inmate Levi Bellfield given weekly fry-ups and video game time

Levi Bellfield is enjoying a number of special privileges while serving two whole-life sentences for murdering two women and a girl. The 57-year-old was jailed in 2011 for murdering 13-year-old Milly Dowler, 19-year-old Marsha McDonnell and 22-year-old Amelie Delagrange between 2002 and 2003. The only prisoner in the UK to be handed two whole-life tariffs, he was also convicted of attempting to murder Kate Sheedy in 2004. He has been made an 'enhanced prisoner' at HMP Frankland, meaning he can have a cooked breakfast every Saturday, access to an Xbox games console, according to MailOnline. He also gets an extra £13.20 a week to spend on snacks at the canteen inside the Category A prison. Staff at the prison are said to be disgruntled about Bellfield's privileges. A source told the outlet: 'They don't call it Monster Mansion for nothing; we are used to the worst of the worst here. 'Bellfield isn't a problem on the unit, but it just doesn't feel quite right that a man in for his crimes should be playing Xbox computer games. 'Those on a whole-life order should get the bare minimum, but unfortunately as officers our hands are tied.' Inmates are not allowed to play violent video games but can play other games such as sports titles. Bellfield converted to Islam while in prison, now using the name Yusuf Rahim. Last year he made an application to get married, later withdrawing it and submitting one for a civil partnership. More Trending It's understood the request was denied, though the killer also attempted to secure legal aid to appeal the decision. In 2023 he reportedly wrote and signed a confession to killing 19-year-old Vietnamese student Elizabeth Chau, but detectives later concluded he was lying. Other inmates at HMP Frankland are Wayne Couzens, who killed Sarah Everard, and Soham child killer Ian Huntley. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: 'Having received two whole-life orders, Bellfield will rightly spend the rest of his life in jail.' Fourth person found dead at beneath beauty spot cliff in just four days

A fourth person has been found dead beneath cliffs near Whitby Abbey in just four days. Emergency services were called to the iconic beach 11.01am today after reports a woman's body had been found found at Sandsend near Whitby Abbey. Officers later discovered the body behind the main cark park, below the cliffs. It comes after three other people have been found dead beneath the cliffs this week. A man and woman, believed to be in their 40s, fell to their deaths from 200ft cliffs behind Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening. Brian Vickers, 63, camping nearby, told MailOnline the path was 'extremely busy with walkers and dog walkers'. He said: 'I was told the couple who died were walking along the path. Another couple were coming the other way. 'The next thing we know is they jumped. It was absolutely horrific to see. The poor souls did not stand a chance. They fell straight onto the rocks below. 'The coastguard helicopter arrived in an hour and we witnessed the horrific scene of them being winched from the beach to waiting ambulances on the cliff top.' A woman aged in her 60s was also found dead by the cliffs near Whitby Pavilion on Thursday. North Yorkshire Police said: 'It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. 'Officers are supporting the woman's family at this difficult time. 'The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.' The force added: 'There are no connections between this sudden death, the sudden deaths of a man and woman below Whitby Abbey on Wednesday 30 July or the woman below Whitby Abbey on Thursday 31 July.' Shock moment TV reporter screams as she's mugged right before going live on air

In a shocking incident, a television reporter was mugged moments before she went live — watch the footage here as the entire terrifying ordeal is caught on camera Clara Nery, a Brazilian journalist, recently suffered a shock incident while gearing up to report live on camera. ‌ A TV correspondent for the Band network, Clara was mugged on a sidewalk in Botafogo, a southern Rio de Janeiro neighborhood, moments before going live for the Bora Brasil morning program on Monday, July 28. ‌ In the bizarre clip, Clara can be seen typing intently on her phone in the run up to the live broadcast, as a man on a motorbike appears in the background and slowly closes in on the reporter. While driving past Clara, the assailant can be seen reaching out and swiping the journalist's phone from her hand. It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. ‌ The clip shows Clara screaming out in shock and letting out a swear word before lunging after her phone and disappearing from the camera's view. Clara later confirmed the mugger was unable to steal and make off with her device as she had a firm grip on it. She said: 'I had my back turned when this man rode by on a motorcycle on the sidewalk and tried to take my phone. In the video, you can see the moment he puts his hand on my phone and takes it from me. ‌ 'Luckily, and despite his lack of skill, I managed to retrieve the phone. But we already have the security camera footage, the camera that managed to focus on his face.' The scene of the attempted mugging was attended to by a Rio de Janeiro Military Police unit, which searched the southern Rio de Janeiro neighborhood; however, they were unable to locate the suspect, as per MailOnline. However, after a subsequent review of the CCTV surveillance cameras, authorities were successfully able to obtain a clear shot of the suspect. ‌ In a translated post on social media, Clara wrote: 'A scare of those to go live, but the important thing is that everything turned out fine! Thank you for the messages and support from colleagues from the Military police and Civil police. Shall we share his face that he wants to be known?' Transcribed by a Mirror reporter, Clara can be heard saying in her Instagram video: 'Hi everyone, I'm coming on now a bit more calmly just to say that everything is fine. A lot of people have been asking, sending me messages, wondering if I got hurt or if my phone was broken. I wasn't hurt, and my phone was recovered completely intact — it didn't break when it hit the ground. ‌ 'Despite the scare, fortunately everything was recorded, as there were security cameras around. I was with my colleague, cinematographer Leonardo Teixeira, so we also have his camera footage, because we were about to go live, which made the scare even greater. But all those images are already with the Military Police and the Civil Police. 'I also want to personally thank Lieutenant J. Gonçalves from the Botafogo Battalion, and Police Chief Dr. Alan Duarte from the Botafogo Police Department. They gave me a lot of support, and I really trust their work. I'm sure that soon he will be identified and arrested.' Clara continues: 'Now it remains to be seen whether, once arrested, he will actually stay in custody. Because we see so many cases like this, or even much worse, where the criminals are armed, the victims are threatened, and then the offenders end up being released shortly after — sometimes just a few days later, or even during the custody hearing. But what matters today is that everything is okay. 'These are alarming numbers, and this isn't an isolated incident. In fact, we're going to bring a full report on this in today's edition of Jornal da Band. And since so many things are going viral online and on social media, I'll also leave his photo here to see if it spreads and helps find him.' The Rio de Janeiro Public Security Institute reports a 27% rise in cell phone thefts in June compared to the same period in 2024. In total, over 2,300 mobile devices were stolen last month, up from 1,808 in June of the previous year.
