
American Airlines just bet big on Hydrogen engines - is this the end of jet fuel?

The first step in American Airlines' exciting new project to reinvent flights is the company's acquisition of 100 hydrogen-electric engines from startup ZeroAvia.

Perhaps a cleaner fuel source will be used to categorize aviation instead of jet fuel. American Airlines and ZeroAvia's partnership could mark the beginning of flights powered by hydrogen.
ADVERTISEMENT American Airlines first revealed their tentative agreement with ZeroAvia on July 2, 2024, and it was categorized by the 100 hydrogen-electric engines they would purchase. Utilizing hydrogen to produce energy to power the electric motors' rotating propellers is the fundamental idea behind electric engines. Using these engines would require a greater distance from combustion engines.Although it appears that hydrogen-electric technology is currently being tested on a 20-seat aircraft, the work is far from over. The engine that ZeroAvia is developing would be appropriate for larger planes like the Bombardier CRJ700.

Even though engineering is still in progress, these hydrogen-electric engines could end up being the answer for shorter routes and short-haul flights. Reducing some of the emissions that the aviation sector produces is a worthwhile objective, as per a report by Eco News.

America has established itself as a leader in environmentally friendly aviation by collaborating with ZeroAvia. The road to hydrogen-powered engines is not totally straightforward, though, as greater investments are required because of the expensive infrastructure required to fuel hydrogen-powered aircraft. Although long-haul flights are not yet possible with hydrogen-powered engines, they show promise for shorter journeys, such as powering flights between North American airports.

After examining flight recorder data, the NTSB first reported a discrepancy in the helicopter's altitude readings on February 14. Live Events As part of the investigation, tests were conducted with three of the same helicopter models -- Sikorsky Black Hawk Lima -- belonging to the same battalion. The findings revealed this week showed differences between the altitude indicated by the radar altimeter and the barometric altimeter on the aircraft. Investigator Marie Moler noted that the altimeters "showed an 80- to 130-foot (24- to 40-meter) difference in flight" although the differences were within 20 to 55 feet in a controlled test environment. "Once the helicopter rotors were turning and producing lift and thrust, the altimeter readings lowered significantly and stayed lower throughout the flights," Moler said. NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy called the discrepancy significant, calling for more investigation. "I am concerned. There is a possibility that what the crew saw was very different than what the true altitude was," Homendy said. "A 100-foot difference is significant" in this case, she added. In the Potomac River area where the collision occurred, helicopters are required to stay below 200 feet, officials said during the hearings. President Donald Trump was quick to blame diversity hiring policies for the accident although no evidence has emerged that they were responsible. Federal Aviation Agency air traffic control specialist Clark Allen told the hearing there was sufficient supervisory staff present in the control tower that night. The collision was the first major plane crash in the United States since 2009 when 49 people were killed near Buffalo, New York.

Rebalancing trade ties: India's path to reduced Chinese import dependence
Synopsis Despite escalating geopolitical frictions and diplomatic tensions, India's merchandise trade with China has shown significant resilience, increasing by 81% to $128 billion in FY 2024-25 from $71 billion in FY2015-16. iStock India's top imports from China in 2024 were concentrated in machinery and electronics, such as electronic integrated circuits, telephone sets and parts, automatic data processing machines, and photovoltaic cells. Over the past decade, India's merchandise trade with China has shown significant resilience, increasing by 81% from $71 billion in FY 2015-16 to $128 billion in FY 2024-25 (Figure 1), despite escalating geopolitical frictions and diplomatic tensions. However, this growth masks a significant imbalance for India. Although total trade has grown, this expansion has been largely driven by an 84% surge in imports. In 2024-25, imports from China accounted for about 16% of India's total import basket, totalling around $114 billion. This made China India's largest source of imports. The economic asymmetry has been further aggravated by the relatively sluggish growth in India's exports to China, leading to a widening trade deficit over the years. In 2024-25, this deficit reached a record high of $99.2 billion. China now accounts for nearly 35% of India's overall trade deficit, making it the country's biggest trade imbalance with another country. India's top imports from China in 2024 were concentrated in machinery and electronics, such as electronic integrated circuits, telephone sets and parts, automatic data processing machines, and photovoltaic cells. These items together accounted for 56% of total imports from China (Figure 2). Significant import volumes were also concentrated in critical sectors, such as chemical products (15%), which include pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, and fertilisers. Base metals, plastics, and rubber followed at 8% and 6%, 75% of India's imports from China comprised high- and medium-technology manufactures in 2024 (Figure 3). In terms of the industrial use, intermediate and capital goods accounted for 55%.China's dominance is further underscored by its overwhelming share in India's global imports in several products. In 2024, India imported 560 different products from China, with at least 80% of its total global imports originating from China alone. The combined value of these imports was approximately $19.5 heavy dependence on Chinese imports raises critical concerns about India's industrial reliance and strategic autonomy. However, as highlighted in the Economic Survey 2023-24 and echoed by several prominent economists, a complete decoupling from Chinese supply chains may not be a viable option for India due to China's deep integration into global supply chains, particularly the large share of intermediate and capital goods sourced from China that are vital for sustaining India's manufacturing capacity. Hence, a more pragmatic approach would be to reduce overdependence on imports by encouraging greater Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in India's manufacturing sector, especially through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. This approach holds particular promise for India's electronics and automobile sectors—areas where import dependence on China is high. Another key concern regarding the long-term sustainability of India's trade balance with China is the dominance of uncompetitive imports in India's import basket. A product imported from China can be considered uncompetitive when its per-unit import price is higher than that offered by at least one of India's top three alternative supplier countries for the same product. In 2024, of India's top 50 imported products from China at the HS-6-digit level, 23 were uncompetitive. For instance, penicillin, which India imports from China, is available from Hong Kong at a 15% lower price, and from the UAE, it is about 36% cheaper. These uncompetitive products alone made up nearly $30 billion in imports, which is about two-thirds (64%) of the total value of India's top 50 imports from China, dominated primarily by machinery and electronics, followed by chemical goods, which include pharmaceuticals as well (Figure 4).The persistence of such uncompetitive imports despite available cheaper alternatives can, in part, be attributed to China's strategic export promotion practices. These include offering deferred payment options, low-interest financing, and technical cooperation arrangements for its exporters to make its exports more attractive to importing countries. Thus, the China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation—Sinosure, the country's official export credit agency (ECA), provides credit insurance to Chinese companies engaged in international trade, safeguarding them against the risk of non-payment. This protection encourages exporters to offer deferred payment terms to foreign buyers, enhancing trade turnover and benefiting both parties. Hence, these mechanisms significantly reduce payment risk, encourage higher trade turnover, and make Chinese products reducing India's dependence on uncompetitive imports from China should remain a key strategic priority. This can be achieved by gradually diversifying towards more price-competitive suppliers and by seeking new source countries for imports. Simultaneously, India should make concerted efforts to encourage Chinese FDI into non-strategic sectors where the country faces high import dependence, as this could strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity along with paving the way for a more sustainable trade relationship with China. To further tech manufacturing, India rethinks China blockade
Nearly half a decade ago, India adopted a 'China-out' strategy of sorts, in response to the border clashes in 2020, introduced an anti-Beijing foreign investment policy, and kept Chinese firms out of critical sectors like telecommunications. Now, however, necessitated by changing geopolitical dynamics, following US President Donald Trump's unprecedented onslaught on global trade, and India's own manufacturing ambitions, New Delhi is undertaking a serious rethink on the existing strategy, and is strongly considering particularly easing China-based entities' entry into the country, with some riders. The most recent sign of the thaw came in the form of a recommendation made by the government think tank Niti Aayog, earlier this month, to ease India's foreign direct investment (FDI) rules, which involves government scrutiny into investments made by Chinese firms. Earlier, the Economic Survey 2023-24 had sprung a surprise by advocating attracting investments from Chinese companies to boost exports. India had earlier put restrictions on investments from China through Press Note 3 in April 2020 to curb potential opportunistic takeovers of Indian companies during the Covid-19 pandemic by making a government approval mandatory for all investments from countries sharing a land border with India, including China. It continued to be in force in the wake of national security concerns due to border tensions after the Galwan clash. Early signs of a thaw There have been some signs that India is slowly, but surely, allowing Chinese companies to partner with Indian entities. Dixon Technologies, which is a major Indian electronics assembly company, received approval from the IT Ministry to set up a joint venture with China-based Longcheer. The new company will focus on manufacturing and supplying a wide range of electronics, including smartphones, tablets, true wireless stereo (TWS) devices, smartwatches, AI-powered PCs, automotive electronics, and healthcare devices. Dixon will hold 74 per cent in the JV, and the remaining 26 per cent will be with Longcheer. 'We can not continue to avoid China. The truth is, they make things which we need for our assembly operations, and if we want to go deeper into the supply chain, our companies have to work with Chinese companies,' a senior government official said. The IT Ministry, earlier this year, notified a Rs 23,000 crore policy for electronic components manufacturing, and it is widely anticipated that Indian firms would partner with Chinese entities to participate in the scheme, given the expertise they have. Recently, India also resumed issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals as part of a broader effort to repair bilateral ties. Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to China where he had underlined that 'differences should not become disputes' nor should 'competition ever become conflict' and that while India and China have made good progress in the past nine months towards the normalisation of bilateral relations, they should work to address de-escalation on the border. China out in letter, not in spirit, and some repercussions Of course, while the government managed to keep China out in some sectors like finished smartphones, imports from the country continued, particularly for a number of electronic components, which are crucial for the final assembly process in India, but for which New Delhi has little to no production base. The Indian Express had earlier reported that the financial year 2023-24, India imported electronic components worth over $12 billion from China and $6 billion from Hong Kong, with the two accounting for more than half of total such imports to India – suggesting that the country's growing footprint in electronics manufacturing was not necessarily into reduced reliance on Beijing. In the last five years, electronics imports from China and Hong Kong have far outnumbered imports from other major manufacturing hubs like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and all ASEAN countries, combined. China, for its own part, and seeing India's growing manufacturing footprint, also imposed restrictions on its companies, making it harder for them to do business with Indian firms. For instance, India's share in US smartphone imports surged to nearly 36 per cent in the first five months of 2025, from about 11 per cent in 2024. China, which continues to dominate the product category, saw its share drop from 82 per cent to 49 per cent over the same period, this paper had reported earlier. China's actions include pulling workers out of India, and making it more difficult for India-based manufacturing companies to obtain capital goods, which are needed for the assembly process. China has also imposed a blockade on several rare earth metals and magnets, and while the prime target of that restriction is the United States, India has found itself caught in the crosshairs.
