The Lakshadweep administration is considering the acquisition of Bitra, one of the 10 inhabited islands in the archipelago, for defence purposes. The move invited a strong protest from Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed, who extended complete support to the local residents of the island and promised them to explore political and legal avenues to resist it. At present, there are 105 families on the island. And several have opposed the move.
A recent government notification outlined this proposal for the Department of Revenue to take over the entire land area of Bitra Island, reported news agency PTI. The intent is to transfer it to relevant defense and strategic agencies of the Centre. What is the reason behind acquiring Bitra Island?
The notification, issued last week, clarified that the initiative is driven by the strategic location of the island, its national security relevance, and the inherent logistical and administrative challenges posed by the civilian habitation.
According to the news agency PTI report, the territorial administration would take over the island as per the relevant provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resetlement Act, 2013 for which Social Impact Assessment study has to be undertaken for the affected area.
District Collector Shivam Chandra, in the order, said all stakeholders, including grama sabhas, would be consulted as part of the Social Impact Assessment initiatives. The survey of the proposed area under the acquisition would be completed within two months from the date of the publication of the notification on July 11, it stated. On the other hand, Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed has stood up firm against the move to take over Bitra island by the UT administration. He stated that the real objective behind the move is to displace the indigenous population. In a statement issued by his office, the MP said Bitra is the smallest inhabited island in the UT and he would strongly protest against the administration's attempt to acquire it under the pretext of defense requirements. He also demanded that the decision be withdrawn immediately.
Sayeed pointed out that the land required for defense purposes has already been acquired by the government in several islands. He stated that targeting Bitra, which has had a permanent population for decades, without considering any of these alternatives, is completely unacceptable. Furthermore, he criticised the administration for initiating such actions without any consultation with the indigenous residents, especially at a time when there are no functioning of local panchayat in the islands. He stated that this kind of unilateral action undermines the democratic system and violates the constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens.
In a statement, the MP assured that he would stand with the people of Bitra and would explore all political and legal avenues to resist the move. In addition, he also stated that he would raise the issue in the upcoming Parliament session, urging the central government to intervene immediately.
Hamdullah Sayeed, MP for Lakshadweep, in a video message has given assurances to the people of Bitra not to panic or feel anxious about the notification. 'As your MP, we held a conference that included leaders from Bitra and Lakshadweep and discussed it in detail. We have decided to fight with the people of Bitra, politically and legally,' Hamdullah Sayeed stated, as reported by The Times of India.

Amaravati, Jul 27 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, as part of his five-day visit to Singapore, met the Indian High Commissioner and several investors on Sunday and showcased the state's vast potential. He said that Andhra Pradesh is the most suitable destination for global investments, highlighting strengths in the green energy, electronics, ports, logistics and manufacturing sectors. 'Andhra Pradesh offers abundant opportunities for investment across multiple sectors," said Naidu in an official release. The CM held talks with Indian High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule, who shared insights into Singapore's achievements in diverse areas, its robust economic growth and the effective public policies being implemented there. Naidu shared details of the state's newly introduced policies, aimed at attracting investments across various sectors. The state has set an ambitious target of producing 160 gigawatts of green energy, he added. He informed the High Commissioner that green hydrogen projects have already been launched in Visakhapatnam (in partnership with NTPC) and Kakinada. Under the India Quantum Mission, Andhra Pradesh is set to establish the country's 'first-ever Quantum Valley' in Amaravati, said Naidu, adding that global tech leader Google is setting up a data center in Visakhapatnam. Highlighting Andhra's industrial potential, the CM said Rayalaseema is ideal for defence and aerospace units and urged support to make the state a gateway for Singaporean investments. Ambule informed the CM that on several sectors, the Singaporean companies are exploring investment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh, including electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, shipbuilding, port operations, data centers and pharmaceuticals. According to the release, major Asia-Pacific firms headquartered in Singapore, including STT (ST Telemedia)–which specialises in digital infrastructure and data centers and Keppel Corporation–which operates in infrastructure, energy, and urban development have shown interest in investing in Andhra Pradesh. Similarly, Equinix, a global leader in data centers and internet connectivity services and PSA International-a port operating company and logistics firms have shown interest in investing in Andhra Pradesh. The meeting also focused on collaboration in fields such as artificial intelligence, startups, medical device research, and academic partnerships between universities in the southern state and Singapore. Andhra Pradesh Education Minister Nara Lokesh shared plans for expanding higher education institutions while Municipal Minister P Narayana presented state's housing schemes, inspired by Singapore's successful public housing model. Later, Naidu met the representatives from Surbana Jurong, a global urban infrastructure company who has shown interest in investing in Andhra Pradesh and invited them to join large-scale housing projects under the state's 'Housing for All" initiative. The CM explained that the state is focusing on infrastructure development projects and highlighted the development of 20 ports and 15 airports, positioning itself as a logistics hub. Similarly, Eversendai Engineering, a Malaysia-based construction firm, has shown interest in investing in Andhra Pradesh after its chairman Tan Sri Dato' AK Nathan met Naidu. They discussed plans to set up a state-of-the-art manufacturing factory and integrated training center in the state, with Visakhapatnam or Krishnapatnam shortlisted as possible locations. The proposed factory, spread over two lakh square meters, will aid nationwide product distribution, boost industrial growth, and create large-scale employment opportunities across Andhra Pradesh's emerging industrial zones, said the release. 'It's Not Final List, Why Such Fuss?' EC Clarifies Amid Bihar Voter Roll Revision Row
Last Updated: The Election Commission of India criticised opposition parties for misinformation about Bihar's electoral roll revision. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday took a veiled dig at opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll ahead of the assembly elections saying that 'some people" are spreading misinformation about the exercise. The poll body further asserted that the draft electoral roll to be published in Bihar is not the final voters' list, saying a month's time will be available to include eligible electors and exclude those ineligible. PTI. It further said that it is 'not able to understand" that when a month-long period from August 1 to September 1 is available to point out wrongful inclusions and exclusions of voters' names, 'why are they creating such a big fuss now?" It said political parties are free to check with their workers on the actual progress of the process. 'Why not ask their 1.6 lakh BLAs to submit claims and objections from August 1 till September 1?" the ECI quipped, referring to booth level agents, or BLAs. 'Why are some people trying to give an impression that the draft list is the final list, which it is not, as per SIR orders." As the first phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll ended on Friday this week, the ECI said that at the end of the month-long first phase, enumeration forms from 7.24 crore or 91.69 per cent voters of the state have been received. The state, going to the polls later this year, has an electorate of nearly 7.90 crore. The numbers shared by the ECI showed that at least 65 lakh names will be dropped as they are no longer eligible. This includes 22 lakh deceased electors, seven lakh electors registered in more than one location, and about 36 lakh electors who have either permanently migrated or could not be traced. The poll body also said that enumeration forms of approximately 1.2 lakh electors were yet to be received back. The EC said booth-level officers did not find these electors or get back their enumeration forms because they have either become voters in other states or Union territories, or were not found in existence, or did not submit the forms till July 25. Another reason was that they were not willing to register themselves as voters for some reason or the other. The poll watchdog said the exact status of these voters will be known after a scrutiny of these forms by August 1. The poll authority also that 99.8 per cent of Bihar electors have been covered so far and forms of 7.23 crore have been received and digitised on the last day of the phase 1 of the revision on Friday. The ECI said that the digitisation of forms, along with BLO reports, of the remaining electors will also be completed by August 1. Opposition To SIR Various opposition parties in Bihar have claimed that crores of eligible citizens will be disenfranchised during the roll revision for want of documents. They have also claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will benefit from it as the state machinery will target people opposed to the ruling alliance in the state. Meanwhile, the EC said the first aim of the SIR is to ensure the participation of all electors and political parties. 'Out of 7.89 crore electors as on 24.06.2025, over 7.24 crore electors have submitted their Enumeration Forms indicating overwhelming participation," it said. The EC said it is making special efforts to ensure that no eligible voter in Bihar is left behind. No names can be deleted from draft rolls without due process: EC
New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) The Election Commission on Sunday asserted that no name can be deleted from the draft electoral roll of Bihar without following due process, including an order from the electoral registration officer (ERO). The EC underlined the due process involved in the exercise amid allegations by opposition parties that crores of eligible persons will lose their voting rights for want of documents due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar. The poll panel said there will be no deletion from Draft Electoral Rolls without a 'speaking order". A speaking order is a self-explanatory order that details the reasons for reaching a particular conclusion. According to SIR guidelines, no name can be deleted from the draft list published on August 1 without notice and a speaking order of the Electoral Registration Officers/Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO/AERO), it said. Any elector aggrieved by any decision of the ERO can appeal to the District Magistrate and the Chief Electoral Officer thereafter. The final voter list will be published in the state on September 30.
