Seb Atkinson credits England call-up to 'freedom' at Gloucester

Seb Atkinson believes the 'freedom' he has been given by Gloucester's coaches this season has been key to his first senior England call-up.
Atkinson has had a brilliant season for the Cherry & Whites and was one of 14 uncapped players in a recent training squad assembled by Steve Borthwick ahead of this summer's tour of Argentina and USA.
The centre's stock has been rising for a while, having made his senior debut for Worcester in 2021, and he hopes to crown it with an international debut this summer.
"You never expect a call-up, but I'm really proud," he said.
'Credit to the team and the coaching staff at Gloucester for what they've done this year.
"They've given us the freedom and the exposure for me to play the way that I feel I play best, so cheers to them and hopefully I can keep moving forwards.
"We had some dark times last year where people were frustrated, we weren't performing the way that we felt that we could, but credit to the coaches.
"They gave us the opportunity to express ourselves and play freely. With the squad that we've got we've really taken that into our own hands this year and played some enjoyable rugby."

The Bromsgrove native has taken the freedom and run with it, ranking top in carries, tackles, passes, and post-contact metres and second in total metres, line break assists, and try assists among Premiership centres this campaign.
He also broke Beauden Barrett's 'bronco' test world record earlier this season, clocking in at four minutes and eight seconds.
"I guess I can verify it," the centre said. "We did one during the Six Nations training block. I wasn't expecting that time at all.
"Our training had been pushing us to a level where I was able to achieve that, but I still surprised myself by a good 20 seconds or so."
The coming tour to the Americas, which is preceded by a clash with a France XV on June 21, could be Atkinson's springboard into a long and impressive international career if he transfers his domestic performance into an England shirt.
Steve Borthwick knows how important these tours can be and has identified Argentina as an opportunity for players to put their hand up.
"The example you'd use would be 2017,' he said. 'Players emerged in that series against Argentina and really staked their claim two years out from the World Cup and became really important, influential players for England at the 2019 World Cup.
"I have no doubt there will be players who emerge and stake their claim this summer, and say 'I want to be part of that team in 2027'. I'm looking forward to that. The enthusiasm, the energy and the excitement they bring is really, really impressive."

Chelsea's 4-1 win against Benfica in the last 16 of the Club World Cup took a mammoth four hours to complete due to the match in Charlotte being stopped because of yet another weather delay Enzo Maresca branded Chelsea's farcical Club World Cup tie a 'joke' after it was delayed for nearly TWO HOURS. Chelsea boss Maresca was furious after his players were taken off the pitch for one hour and 53 minutes because of lightning storms and severe weather warnings. And Maresca claimed the United States was not fit to host the tournament after Chelsea were caught up in the SIXTH weather delay of the tournament which will have a knock-on effect for next year's World Cup. They eventually went through against 10-man Benfica 4-1 after extra time as the game took four hours and 38 minutes to complete from the original kick-off time. Strict US rules state that games must be delayed for 30 minutes for safety reasons if lightning is spotted within a five-mile radius - and it resets every time another flash is spotted. It is the sixth weather delay in the tournament, with Chelsea now into the quarter-finals against Palmeiras and on course for a potential semi-final showdown with Manchester City if they both progress. Maresca said: "It's a joke. That's why I said it. if they're already suspended six games, probably there is something that is not working. I'm not here to decide the rule. I'm no one to decide the rule. I'm the last one. I'm talking as a manager. As a manager, it's difficult to manage two hours suspended. "There is some problem for me personally. But I'm not talking - I'm talking as a manager. Because when you are two hours inside and you try to keep them in the game, but for two hours, they are speaking with the family outside for safety reasons. "They are eating something, they are playing, they are laughing. How can you keep them two hours inside, focused? Then we are happy. We are happy to be here. We are happy to be in this competition. But it's something that it's not normal for." Maresca argued that certain cities in the United States should not be staging games because of the weather warnings at this time of year. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the game was suspended with 84 minutes on the clock only for Benfica to snatch a last gasp penalty before they had Gianluca Prestianni sent off in extra-time and Maresca's men ran riot. It's completely something you know, but I struggle to understand. I can understand that for security reasons, you are to suspend the game. 'Scary' David Beckham incident that left Martin Brundle shaken up at F1 race
Martin Brundle has interviewed a host of celebrities during his time on the F1 grid, but there have been few incidents that have left him feeling as shaken as when he tried to talk to David Beckham Martin Brundle has opened up about a "scary" encounter he had when he tried to interview David Beckham during one of his famous F1 grid walks. The Sky Sports commentator has been a part of the motorsport world for over four decades. As both a driver and broadcaster, Brundle is a respected figure in the sport. However, the current generation of F1 fans may best know him for his pre-race grid walks, where he chats with celebrities and other stars on the grid. Over the years, Brundle has had engaging conversations with some of the biggest names in showbiz and sport on the grid. However, not all have been keen to chat with the 66-year-old, leading to some less-than-stellar interviews. One such instance involved Manchester United legend Beckham, whom Brundle bumped into at the Miami Grand Prix in 2022. The ex-England skipper, who is now the co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami, was attending his local Grand Prix. After spotting him, Brundle made a beeline to grab a quick word with the football superstar. Although he managed to briefly discuss F1's presence in Florida, Brundle later admitted that he was not sure why he bothered. However, it appears he was more determined to speak to the former free-kick specialist, having failed to get a word with him at the Qatar GP that year. At the time, Beckham had accepted a multi-million-pound deal to be a paid ambassador for the Qatar World Cup. Beckham was on the grid at the same time as Brundle, but he was far from alone. The Sky Sports reporter told SPORTbible:"I was in Qatar trying to speak to David Beckham and there were two guys man-marking me. "Wherever I went, they were just looking at me! They did not want me to talk to David Beckham on that grid; the World Cup was coming up, wasn't it? That was a little bit scary. "They were literally on the grid to stop me. So, I went round the back of [Lewis] Hamilton's car, and they went round the front and kind of just looked at me. That was a little bit odd." In a subsequent interview with GQ Magazine, Brundle was notably critical about his brief interaction with Beckham. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the grid walk and numerous celebrity guests, he maintained that it is still his domain. Brundle said: "I was pretty determined to speak to him. And then when I did, I thought, 'I don't know why I bothered', basically. "I didn't feel good about it, particularly. I don't like bothering people. If they don't want to talk to you, they don't want to talk to you. There are plenty of people who do. "You've got to remember I've been on a F1 grid for 38 years, well over half the life of Formula 1. I've been to well over half of the grands prix in the history of Formula 1, so I feel pretty comfortable in that space – I feel it's my territory."

Lionel Messi will come up against a former club for the first time in his storied career when Inter Miami take on Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 at the Club World Cup Lionel Messi will face his former club Paris Saint Germain in the Club World Cup with a huge point to prove. Inter Miami superstar Messi, 38, had two years at PSG when even one of football's all-time greats could not take the French giants where they wanted to go. Incredibly, Messi scored 32 goals and assisted 35 in 75 appearances for PSG before moving onto Inter Miami. But it simply did not work as PSG had the best names - Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Co - and yet they looked like a group of individuals rather than a team. Fast forward two years and PSG boss Luis Enrique finally delivered the Holy Grail of the Champions League and proved you can win European football's biggest prize without the biggest names. The Messi experiment did not work for PSG and it ended amid some bitterness, acrimony and disappointment. It was good on the pitch for Messi but he did not really fit into a team structure. There was also public fall-out as Messi's family struggled to settle in Paris and, as a result, there is no particular love lost there. And yet he has been a phenomenal success for Inter Miami. He has been a transformational signing. Bigger than when David Beckham went to LA Galaxy and arguably the biggest in MLS history. This week, as they always do, Major League Soccer published the earnings of their players and Messi was top as he pocketed £14.5m - or £290,000-a-week - which was way ahead of anyone else. Messi has been in the US for two years. His debut was a star-studded affair where even LeBron James and Kim Kardashian queued up for selfies. His influence on and off the pitch has been huge. When he first arrived, he saw United States international Benjamin Cremaschi in training and told him: 'run less, think more.' His influence has been huge. Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets followed. The reality is that Inter Miami and the MLS believe he is worth every penny of that giant salary and the charade is now beginning over his future. Messi is in the final year of his contract, they are desperate for him to stay and it is huge for the United States generally because there is less than a year to go until the main World Cup. That is the background and story behind Messi's date with destiny against PSG and a chance to prove his worth and make his point in the last 16 tie on Monday in Atlanta. This is the sort of showdown that FIFA could only dream about when they created the Club World Cup. It was also probably a bit of a pipe dream when Inter Miami started their Club World Cup with a goalless draw against Al Ahly. Inter Miami were lucky to escape with a draw. But the fairytale began when Messi scored a winner with a glorious free kick to beat Porto. They drew against Palmeiras but threw away a 2-0 lead and yet for a MLS side to reach the knock-out stages was a huge moment for the league. That is how they view it here. And also Inter Miami are growing in confidence, belief and meanwhile they are gaining momentum. They have been the best of the three MLS teams in this tournament. Yes, PSG should win. And they are among the favourites to win the Club World Cup. They blitzed Atletico Madrid, lost to Botafogo and then got the job done against Seattle Sounders. They were the best team in Europe bar none last season. Along the way, Enrique kept referencing winning without big stars and names. That will surely fire up Messi. And when Messi is in the mood, he is still a force to be reckoned with.
