Brooklyn Mirage closed for year as troubled owner files for bankruptcy

The curtains will fall on the Brooklyn Mirage for the rest of the summer after the venue's troubled owner filed for bankruptcy Monday. Avant Gardner LLC took the drastic step after it faced ongoing financial snags and failed to reopen the prized East Williamsburg open-air concert hall in time for its 2025 season of shows – as newly minted CEO Gary Richards claimed he had no choice but to plunge into a reorganization. 'Two months ago I was brought in as CEO to rebuild the Company's culture and turn the business around,' Richards said in a statement. 'I believe this Chapter 11 restructuring is the most viable path forward.' 3 An aerial view of Brooklyn Mirage. NY Post The company faced a mountain of bad publicity and scrutiny over safety after two ravers were found dead near the Mirage in 2023. Each died after leaving separate shows at the isolated location. The venue has also been criticized as a haven for hard drugs even as Avant Gardner has argued it has strict protocols in place. The business was dinged up after chaos unfolded the same year at the Electric Zoo festival – a three-day event operated by Avant Gardner. The annual set of shows didn't take place last year and hasn't been scheduled for this year. 3 Safety issues have dogged the Mirage. Adam Gray for NY Post The Mirage was supposed to open in May after a massive renovation, but was dogged by delays and will remain shuttered for now, according to the company. 3 The Mirage won't be open until next year. Getty Images The other venues in the sprawling complex, the Great Hall and Kings Hall, will still be operational, but the closure of the Mirage has been 'catastrophic' for the company's finances, Richards said in a court filing, according to Bloomberg. The Mirage is expected to reopen by next year, the company said. Avant Gardner, which is owned by co-founder Juergen 'Billy' Bildstein, owes various vendors more than $10 million, including a cool $1.8 million to South African DJ Black Coffee Entertainment, according to the Chapter 11 filing that paints a bleak financial picture. The company hopes to borrow up to $45 million to go toward the Chapter 11 proceeding and keep operations going, the filing shows. Meanwhile, the company has up to $500 million in liabilities and only at most $100 million in assets.

Concept Medical Announces First Patient Enrollment in MAGICAL-SV IDE Trial, Expanding its Coronary Clinical Program Across the U.S. and Europe

Concept Medical announces first patient enrollment in MAGICAL-SV IDE trial, expanding its Coronary Clinical Program across the U.S. and Europe. Business Wire India Concept Medical Inc. , a global pioneer in drug-delivery technologies, announced the enrollment of the first patient in the MAGICAL-SV (MAGIcTouch™ Sirolimus-Coated Balloon for Treatment of Coronary Artery Lesions in Small Vessels) trial, a U.S. Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study evaluating its MagicTouch™ sirolimus-coated balloon (SCB) for the treatment of small coronary vessels. This first U.S. enrollment follows the FDA's IDE approval of MagicTouch SCB, marking a major milestone in Concept Medical's mission to revolutionize coronary artery disease (CAD) treatment and expand its clinical program into the US and Europe. Dr. Samin Sharma enrolled the first patient at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, Director of Interventional Cardiology, marking a crucial step in advancing treatment options for patients with small-vessel coronary artery disease. 'Today marks a great feat for us and for the MAGICAL-SV trial,' said Dr. Samin Sharma. 'My team at Mount Sinai is privileged to be the first to begin this study. This is a proud moment for all of us, especially knowing what the trial signifies and aims to achieve by evaluating MagicTouch as a potential alternative for treating small vessels in the U.S.' Concept Medical is now actively enrolling in three IDE trials concurrently in the U.S., across coronary and peripheral interventions, underscoring its commitment to bringing innovative therapies to patients worldwide. MAGICAL-SV is a prospective, multicenter, single-blind randomized trial (2:1 randomization) comparing Concept Medical's MagicTouch sirolimus-coated balloon to DES (Everolimus eluting stents [EES] or Zotarolimus eluting stents [ZES]) for the treatment of small coronary artery lesions. Randomization is stratified by study site and presence of medically-treated diabetes mellitus status. The trial will enroll 1,605 patients across the U.S. and Europe, to evaluate the primary endpoint of target lesion failure (TLF) at 12 months. An international team of renowned cardiologists, Dr. Martin B. Leon (USA) – Study Chair, with principal investigators (PI) Dr. Azeem Latib (USA), Dr. Ajay Kirtane (USA), and Prof. Antonio Colombo (Europe) will lead the MAGICAL-SV trial. Dr. Azeem Latib, a U.S. PI for MAGICAL-SV, noted, 'The first U.S. patient enrollment in the MAGICAL-SV study marks an exciting step forward in building robust evidence for SCB technology in the treatment of small-vessel coronary disease. As we explore metal-free PCI strategies, this study brings renewed hope for safer, more effective options for our patients.' Prof. Antonio Colombo, who leads the European arm, added, 'Starting small and going big! MAGICAL-SV represents an important step in building evidence for sirolimus-coated balloons.' This milestone embodies a 'leave nothing behind' philosophy in coronary interventions, treating arterial blockages without permanent implants and addressing the limitations of metallic stents in small vessels. Dr. Martin B. Leon, the Study Chair, emphasized evaluating a no-stent strategy through this trial: 'The initiation of the MAGICAL-SV trial marks an important step in evaluating sirolimus-coated balloon therapy for small coronary vessels. By addressing key limitations of stenting in this complex anatomy, the study aims to generate strong comparative data versus DES. The results could inform future treatment strategies in the U.S. and Europe, offering clinicians a potential alternative for managing small-vessel disease.' The pioneering MAGICAL-SV trial aims to yield strong clinical evidence for sirolimus-coated balloon therapy, supporting Pre-Market Approval (PMA) for MagicTouch SCB in small vessels and potentially redefining CAD treatment. Dr. Manish Doshi, Founder and MD of Concept Medical, said, "MAGICAL-SV marks another step in our mission to redefine vascular care. We're focused on delivering next-generation solutions, helping clinicians achieve better outcomes and give CAD patients a better quality of life." Africa's richest country to boost continental trade ties after U.S. 30% tariff hit

South Africa is strategising to tap into alternative markets to mitigate the impact of the United States' 30% tariffs on its exports. South Africa is pursuing alternative markets to mitigate impacts of newly imposed US tariffs. President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to scale up trade missions and enhance export programs. The tariffs threaten over 100,000 jobs in export-driven industries within South Africa. South Africa is strategising to tap into alternative markets to mitigate the impact of the United States' 30% tariffs on its exports. 'In the coming months, we will be scaling up our trade missions into new markets in Africa and beyond,' President Cyril Ramaphosa said. The government also plans to expand its National Exporter Development Programme, which aims to increase the number of export-ready businesses, according to Bloomberg. Pretoria had been negotiating for months to avert the tariff hike, proposing to buy U.S. liquefied natural gas and pledging $3.3 billion in investments into American industries. But those overtures fell short. On Thursday, President Donald Trump slapped a 30% tariff on imports from South Africa, the steepest in sub-Saharan Africa, as part of a broader wave of new levies under his revamped global trade agenda. Economic impact South African Trade Minister Parks Tau called the tariff escalation a direct threat to the country's export-driven sectors, particularly automotive manufacturing, agro-processing, steel, and chemicals. Last month, Central Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago cautioned that tariffs could endanger over 100,000 jobs in South Africa's automotive and agricultural industries. Already burdened with one of the world's highest unemployment rates and sluggish economic growth, South Africa's fragile economy now faces an added threat from the newly imposed tariffs. The United States stands as South Africa's second-largest bilateral trading partner, trailing only China, with trade between the two nations totalling $8.8 billion last year, according to data from the South African Revenue Service. According to South African officials, trade negotiations were entangled with political frictions, most notably Washington's disapproval of South Africa's affirmative action policies, its land reform agenda, and its decision to bring a genocide case against Israel, a close U.S. ally, before the International Court of Justice.
