‘I stopped being afraid of my numbers': US woman pays off $12K credit card debt with ChatGPT's help
Jennifer Allen, a realtor and content creator, told Newsweek that although she earned a decent income, managing her finances had always been a struggle. 'Not because I don't make enough, but because I was never taught financial literacy,' she admitted. For years, she focused on working harder instead of tackling the real issue that was 'poor financial habits'.
Things came to a head after she became a mother. 'We weren't living lavishly, we were just surviving. But the debt piled up while I wasn't looking,' she said.
To take control of her finances, Jennifer gave herself a 30-day challenge and used ChatGPT as her guide. Each day, she asked the AI tool for simple, practical financial advice and made a point to follow through. The suggestions were simple and straightforward, and the key was in the consistency. 'It wasn't some big financial hack,' Jennifer said, adding, 'It was the act of facing it every day, tracking it, talking about it, looking at it. I stopped being afraid of my numbers.'
The AI suggested steps like cancelling unused subscriptions, selling household items on Facebook Marketplace, and planning meals using what was already in her kitchen. One of the biggest wins came when ChatGPT advised her to review her dormant accounts, leading her to discover a brokerage account she had forgotten about, with $10,000 (Rs. 8.56 lakh, approximately) in it.
Another money-saving tip came when ChatGPT recommended cutting back on grocery expenses by using existing pantry items. Jennifer said that the strategy alone saved her hundreds of dollars.
At the end of the 30 days, she had paid off more than half of her debt. Encouraged by her progress, Jennifer now plans to do a second 30-day challenge to clear the remaining balance.
Allen gave simple advice to people by simply stating, 'Don't wait until you feel ready or smart enough to start. You don't have to know all the answers. You just have to stop pretending it's not happening.'

Punjab to provide biz, marketing education to govt school kids: Harjot Singh Bains
Ropar: Encouraging students to set up their own start-ups during schooling, Punjab school education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday announced that the state govt would provide skill education in business and marketing to all the Class XI and XII students in govt schools from the 2026-27 academic session under the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing the Business Blasters Expo 2025 here, Bains said in a world where hundreds and thousands of applicants chased a single job, Punjab's govt had flipped the script. Under the Business Blasters Expo 2025, students are being encouraged to become job creators instead of job seekers, he said, adding that the Punjab govt would provide all kinds of assistance, both financial and technical, to all the progressive-minded to the Business Blasters Expo 2025, the minister said 10 student-led ventures, selected from govt schools across Punjab, demonstrated their business ideas in a shark tank-style showdown before govt leaders, industrialists, startup founders, and educationists. All teams were successful in getting financial assistance to make their dreams come true. The remaining 30 teams also showcased and sold their products at Expo stalls, he said. Bains informed that an investment of Rs 17 lakh was made to set up innovation labs, where students would now be able to develop their own products, even in collaboration with the IITs. Highlighting the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme, he said the state govt had started a new era of student entrepreneurship. This began as a pilot project in 30 schools in the state, where students were asked to present and pitch their business ideas. One shining example is a girl from a BPL (below poverty line) family at Govt Mullanpur Dakha School, who created decorative flower pots that sold for 20 times their price in Ludhiana. Similarly, a youth from the Anandpur Sahib constituency now buys T-shirts from Gurugram and resells them via Instagram, earning Rs 50,000 a month, the minister highlighted. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He mentioned that the leading 10 teams of students showcased business ideas such as electrical cycles, natural beauty products, handmade dupattas (scarves), driving simulators, artwork framing, natural ingredient masalas (spices), safety sticks, chocolates, herbal soaps, and many other innovative products. AAP leader and former deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sasodia, who was also present at the expo, said the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme would be a milestone. "Going forward, govt school students will need to present a business idea to be eligible to pass. Students must gain practical understanding and real-world learning. Those graduating from Class XII will leave with something they've created, sold, and earned money from. Regardless of their chosen degree or diploma, every student must learn how to earn while studying," he said, Sisodia pointed out that every year, 1 crore graduates passed out in India, but only 10 lakh got jobs, the rest continued searching for private sector employment. Between 2014-15 and 2021-22, according to a Parliament report, 22.05 crore youth applied for jobs, but only 7 lakh got them. This stark gap underscores the urgency of programmes like 'Business Blasters', he added. "Under the Business Blasters Expo 2025, it is now mandatory for students to present at least one business idea as a subject-based project. This programme ensures that every student will not only gain financial literacy and independence but also learn the essentials of marketing and entrepreneurship. This is a historic and visionary step, one that will empower and enable every student to stand tall with capability and confidence," said Sisodia. Rajya Sabha member Vikramjeet Sahni announced Rs 10 lakh to the first 10 teams to establish their ventures. Other business persons, industrialists, and senior officers from the state govt present at the event also assured the students of technical expertise and financial assistance. Pramod Bhasin, founder of Genpact; Anuj Kundra, member of Punjab Development Commission; Anandita Mitra, secretary, School Education Punjab Board; and first jury team members Hemant Kanakia, founder and former CEO of Torrent Networking Technologies; Sairee Chahal, founder and CEO of Sheros; Shray Pathak, head of Technology Business Incubator Foundation, IIT Ropar; and others were also present. Aggregators flouting rules, not providing health insurance: City's app-taxi drivers
Guwahati: Cab and bike taxi drivers operating under various online aggregator platforms in the city have raised concerns over the non-implementation of mandatory health and term insurance provisions outlined in this year's guidelines issued by ministry of road transport and highways for motor vehicle aggregators on July 1. The guidelines mandate that aggregator companies shall provide health insurance coverage of at least Rs 5 lakh and term insurance of not less than Rs 10 lakh for each driver registered on their platforms. However, drivers claim these requirements, which were similarly specified in the 2020 guidelines, have remained unimplemented for the past five years. "Guidelines in favour of the drivers are often neglected. It seems that govt is trying to appease only the aggregator companies. Ensuring insurance for driver is not a new guideline as it was included in the motor vehicle aggregators' guidelines of 2020, but it had not yet been implemented," said Jyotish Deka, a cab driver. "We are not provided with any kind of insurance, even though we are always at the risk of meeting with an accident," said Pankaj Bharali, another cab driver who has been working with aggregator apps for the past six years. In order to get bookings for rides, it is required to purchase a recharge on the aggregator's app. Sometimes, it feels like we are only making these companies rich, while at the end of the day there is only a meagre amount left in our hands to meet our expenses, Bharali added. A spokesperson for one of the aggregator apps operating the city refused to speak on the mandatory health and term insurance provisions for the on-boarded drivers, while there was no response from another aggregator that was approached. Assam State Driver Union (ASDU) president Dhrubajyoti Debnath said, "Several of this year's guidelines are similar to the previous guidelines that are yet to be implemented. We are uncertain about the implementation of guidelines, including insurance for the drivers. We request state govt for the proper implementation of all the guidelines."

Waste to Wealth: Huvina Hadagali municipality earns Rs 9 lakh from compost
1 2 Pics: A bio-fertiliser production unit has been established in Huvina Hadagali, utilizing the waste that has been collected; H Imam Saheb, commissioner of Huvina Hadagali Municipality Huvina Hadagali (Vijayanagara): Here is a notable example of waste management success by a local authority. The Huvina Hadagali municipality has generated Rs 9 lakh in revenue over eight years by converting daily waste into organic compost. "This provides us with dual benefits. Firstly, it minimises waste in the town. Secondly, it also creates revenue for the municipality," states chief officer H Imam Saheb. "The town's hotels, businesses, hostels, and residential areas produce considerable daily waste. The municipality encourages waste segregation into organic and inorganic categories at the source. Collection vehicles transport the sorted waste to the treatment facility," explains MLA Krishna Naik. Spread across 10 acres, the facility features a waste separation system. While inorganic waste undergoes eco-friendly disposal, organic waste becomes fertiliser. "The organic manure we produce is highly sought after by coconut, areca, and coffee farmers in the Malnad region, who are our primary customers," remarks Imam Saheb. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo The eight-year initiative yielded Rs 8.9 lakh in total revenue, comprising Rs 6.6 lakh from organic manure and Rs 2.3 lakh from dry waste, averaging more than Rs 1 lakh annually for the municipality. Following National Green Tribunal guidelines, the municipality processes the collected waste daily. To address the existing waste backlog at the facility, a Pune-based company received a disposal contract. Wherever old waste is cleared, the space is transformed with fruit and vegetable saplings. The municipality has established a tidy park right in the garbage disposal unit. Over 6,000 saplings have already been planted there. The organic and vermicompost are currently being tested for NPK values at a laboratory accredited by the Pollution Control Board. "We handle 12 tonnes of waste each day, transforming organic material into fertiliser. The cost for 40 kg of organic fertiliser is set at Rs 300," states chief officer H Imam Saheb. Deputy commissioner MS Diwakar highlights that this solid waste management facility serves as a model for effective municipal operations. "The waste is not only collected and disposed of scientifically, but it also creates revenue for the municipality by transforming waste into fertiliser. This initiative contributes to a healthier environment," he remarks.
