From foundation to setting spray – the products that aren't protecting you & the SPF ‘magic number' you need to wear

THERE'S a lot you can do in 10 minutes – paint your nails, put the washing on, make an omelette…
And in the same amount of time, you could permanently harm your skin through unprotected sun exposure.

When it comes to SPF, not all products are equal, so here's our essential guide

Shockingly, 40% of Brits only buy sunscreen when they go on holiday, and 14% admit to never applying SPF.*
What's more, an estimated 7 million of us admit to being confused about suncare.**
It's no surprise, when celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow suggest only applying sunscreen to the high points of your face, while doctors like Tim Spector suggest sun protection does more harm than good, and trad wife influencers insist we can make sunscreen at home with store-cupboard ingredients.
At the same time, the number of people diagnosed with melanoma in the UK has increased by almost half in the past decade,*** while non-melanoma skin cancer incidences have increased by more than two-fifths.†

Plus, independent testing in the UK and Australia has controversially found some sunscreens don't quite provide the level of protection you might expect.
With such muddled messaging, it's hardly surprising that we're getting it wrong – but it's time to swot up and start taking suncare seriously.
So here's our expert approved guide...
SPF Application 101
If you were to apply the same amount that's used in lab testing - which works out at about two finger lengths of sunscreen to the face and neck, and 6-8 teaspoons of sunscreen for the whole body every time you reapply - the average woman would go through 100ml of SPF for each day spent on a beach.
Most read in Fabulous
'But the way most of us apply sunscreen means we're getting about a third of the advertised protection," explains photobiologist Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatology, who co-created the the UVA star rating system used on sunscreens in the UK.
"So, if you apply an SPF30, you'll end up with a protection factor equivalent to about 10.'
This makes picking a sunscreen you like the formula of – and are happy to apply more of – crucial.
The Perfect SPF Formula
'Ultimately, the best is one that you'll use consistently and correctly, so personal preference plays a significant role,' says Consultant Dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto.
These days, the choices are practically endless when it comes to sunscreen - which makes it even harder to decide which is right for you.
'Creams and lotions can be applied more evenly, providing better coverage, whereas oils and sprays may result in missed spots and sunburn,' Dr Ellie Rashid, consultant dermatologist and KLIRA medical director explains.
Plus, because of the amount of product you need to apply to reach the advertised coverage - products like foundation, setting spray and primer won't give you nearly what you might expect.
If you were applying enough foundation to get the SPF protection advertised on the bottle, you'd be going through a 30ml bottle every three and a half weeks, which would get expensive very quickly.
Hybrid formulas are also often less stable, because of the added ingredients, meaning the sun protection filters degrade faster than those in a dedicated sunscreen.
'Powders also aren't very effective at all, because you can't get a thick enough layer on the skin,' adds Professor Diffey - ruling out SPF boosted setting powders and dry shampoo as your only line of defence.
That doesn't mean they're completely useless.
Hybrid formulas can be helpful for topping up your protection throughout the day once you've already applied a sunscreen.
They're especially good on top of make-up, but be sure to apply more than you think, and re-apply frequently, as you won't be getting the protection factor advertised.
The Magic SPF Protection
Number
With sunscreens ranging from factor 2 to factor 100 lining the shelves - picking the right number might seem as hard as finding the right formula, but there's a much more straightforward answer.
"For general daily use year-round, an SPF of 30 is recommended for most people as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays.
"If you have fair skin, are prone to burning or have a family
history
of skin cancer, you should opt for SPF50," explains Dr Mahto.
"The same goes when spending time outdoors, at the beach or during sports."
No sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so combine it with other protection, such as wearing hats, sunglasses and seeking shade,' she adds.
So, there's no arguing, if you're going on a summer holiday, you should be taking the factor 50 with you.
More SPF, More Protection?
Another important thing to note, is that you can't layer SPFs to increase the protection value - for example, using a factor 15 foundation over an SPF50 sunscreen doesn't give you factor 65.
However, layering products will help ensure any gaps missed in the initial application are covered, and get you closer to the highest factor product all over.
It's one of Professor Diffey's top tips. "Apply sunscreen half an hour before going outside, then reapply it as soon as you get out," he says.
"That way, you're doubling the thickness of the layer of sunscreen and are more likely to cover up bits that you might have missed the first time.'
Because your first layer has absorbed before you apply the second, the overall coverage won't feel heavy or hard to rub in.
When you need to reapply depends on the sunscreen, so check the bottle. But the general rule is, reapply after swimming, towelling or at least every two hours.

Trinny London See The Light SPF 50+ Moisturiser, £46
This is the face SPF I reach for year round.
It truly feels like a lightweight moisturiser, even the packaging looks more like skincare than an SPF.
As well as the high UVA and UVB protection, it contains antioxidants to help reduce existing hyperpigmentation and brighten skin.

This is a brilliant, affordable non-greasy SPF
Credit: Bondi Sands
Bondi Sands Everyday Non Tinted Face Fluid SPF50+, £7.99
This budget as been my go-to affordable recommendation for years, and it still gets rave reviews - you'd be hard pressed to find a more sophisticated formula for under £10.
The packaging makes it great for travel, and the sun-cream scent immediately puts me in holiday mode.

For breakout prone skin, this SPF doesn't block pores
Credit: Bioderma
Bioderma XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible, £19
This formula is extremely thin, so it doesn't feel cloying or oily on skin, and it absorbs in a matter of seconds so it's great for wearing under make-up as you don't have to wait for it to dry down.
Best of all, it's non-comodogenic so won't cause spots, which is a godsend as I just have to glance at the wrong product and I'll break out.
MOST COMMON SPF MISTAKES
No matter how sun safe you are, there's always room for improvement. These are the most common mistakes you might be making, according to Dr Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist at Self London
Not using enough - many people use too little sunscreen. An adult needs about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover the entire body adequately.
Missed areas - areas like the ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and back of the hands are often overlooked but need protection too.
Not reapplying enough - sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying, even if it's labelled as water-resistant.
Waiting until you go outside - chemical sunscreen should be applied 20-30 minutes before going outdoors to allow it to absorb and provide effective protection.
Expired products - sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time. Always check the expiration date and replace any old products.
Only relying on sunscreen - while sunscreen is crucial, it should be part of a broader sun protection strategy that includes seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

Amanda said: "While I rang 999 he was still able to talk a little bit - they were asking what happened and he said he'd got a headache and went dizzy. "He went to call our two year old, and he said her name wouldn't come out of his mouth." Clint was rushed by ambulance to Scunthorpe General Hospital 's stroke unit where he complained that he was unable to feel the left side of his body. When she tried to return to the hospital at 8pm, however, she was told she wasn't allowed to visit her partner of 24 years - but she was assured he was fine. The following morning, however, her worst nightmares came true - doctors said Clint was only responding to touch and that a bleed on his brain had continued overnight. He was taken to intensive care, but Amanda had to make the difficult decision to turn off his life support after 10 days when she was told there was 'no activity' in his brain. The most dangerous sex positions that cause thousands of injuries & they're more vanilla than you might think

YOU might think it's the kinky stuff that causes bedroom accidents but experts say it's actually the most common sex positions that are landing Brits in A&E. New research has revealed the sex positions most likely to cause 6 The top most dangerous sex positions have been revealed The study, by sex education experts at Joy Love Dolls, analysed data from more than 1,000 people across Europe and the US who had sustained a sex-related injury. And the results might just come as a surprise. Here are the top most dangerous sex positions. Doggy Style 6 Doggy style was the most dangerous position for women, Doggy style came out on top as the most dangerous position for women, causing over 20% of injuries. Read more on sex advice And it's no minor tumble either. Women reported a range of injuries from bruises and sprains to vaginal tearing, with one in four vaginal tears linked to this go-to position. For men, doggy was the second most dangerous, responsible for nearly 16% of male sex injuries, with cramped muscles, back pain, and even penile fractures among the most common issues. One in six penile fractures happened in this position. Most read in Fabulous Missionary 6 Missionary was the most dangerous position for men It's missionary that takes the crown for men's worst nightmare in the bedroom. The front-facing position accounted for nearly one in five sex injuries in men, and is the leading cause of penile fractures. It also left many nursing bad backs, sprains and sore muscles. Georgie answers your sex questions Women didn't fare much better with missionary either, it ranked second for them, causing 16.3% of injuries, including 24% of Hips, legs and lower backs are all under strain in the deceptively simple pose. "If you experience discomfort from how you are positioned during missionary sex, try incorporating cushions or a rolled-up towel/blanket to provide some support where you need it most, like under your hips, knees, back or shoulders." Switching positions 6 Switching positions can lead to an unexpected hazard Another unexpected hazard was switching positions mid-romp, which might feel spontaneous but accounts for almost 10% of female injuries. It also leads to 14% of bruises and 10% of vaginal tears. Standing 6 Standing sex can be extremely dangerous Standing sex, while sounding adventurous, is a major back-breaker, especially for men. Nearly half of all injuries from this position are due to back pain. For women, it's a little less risky but still responsible for over 4% of injuries. Scotty says: " A great tool to assist you standing is a sex swing, like this from Ann Summers. " To use it, you hang the stoppers over an open door then close it to keep them locked in place. " If you are the receiver, you can use it to brace your arms and legs in a multitude of ways that will keep you secure, with it's main use being seating yourself into the straps to support your body so that your partner can keep their focus on pleasuring you. Cowgirl and Reverse Cowgirl 6 Reverse Cowgirl proved much more dangerous for men Cowgirl, where the woman is on top, made the top five for both sexes. Men were more likely to suffer down below, while women saw injuries to their knees and hips. One in four men said it even led to fractures. Scotty said: "Make sure to stretch beforehand, when riding keep in mind how your anatomies fit together. "Position yourselves in a way that makes it the most comfortable by leaning forward or backwards to keep the penis inside as much as possible and communicate with your partner. "You can also use cushions to help support you both." Other risky moves include standing 69 and oral sex, with both positions unexpectedly landing people in pain. Sex educator Amy Nguyen from She said: 'It's fascinating, people assume the 'Rough sex is one of the biggest culprits, which highlights the need for better communication in the bedroom. You have to check in with your partner, or you could wind up hurt. 'Shockingly, only 3% of men and 5% of women said they told their partner about the injury afterwards, that lack of openness is worrying.' Over 60% of people admitted they'd been injured during sex, and more than half said they had sought help from a doctor. Amy added: 'Some of these injuries, like back pain or muscle cramps might seem minor. "But others, like tears and fractures, can be serious. Don't be embarrassed to get checked out.' And for those keeping score, vaginal soreness was the most common injury for women, while for men, it was good old-fashioned back pain. So next time you hop into bed, you might want to rethink that 'safe' go-to move. Your body will thank you later. Sexpert Scotty warns fingering can also be a danger. He said: "Our hands carry a lot of bacteria, so when it comes to stimulating our partner internally with them, it's important to make sure that your hands and nails are clean as possible to avoid cause infections. "Also keep your nails trimmed to avoid cutting your partner. "A great alternative is to incorporate a toy - try pleasuring your partner with a g-spot vibrator that mimics the shape of a curved finger to perfectly stimulate the g-spot, like the Friction is generally not a good thing during sex as it opens you up to more risk of injury with the sensitive skin being tugged at that can cause tears and friction burn. Scotty recommends hand jobs as a popular way of pleasuring your partners with penises, and though saliva does come in handy, it has a habit of drying up too fast, so your best bet is to invest in some lube to keep things slippery and safer, like a

The reality star shared: 'SO! Just had a routine check up and found I have gum disease that is now destroying my bone? 'A few teeth have very little bone left which is actually quite scary. Apparently I'm just really unlucky/ could be genetic and I need to tackle asap!!' Read More on Binky Felstead Binky continued: 'I've got so many questions, what am I supposed to do other than this every day? Is there anyone out there I can see to zap this asap? 'Teeth have always scared me over anything.' The mum-of-three revealed in a second post that a lot of people had got in touch with her in similar situations. She said: 'I'm going to see a hygienist every three months and they're going to take videos and pictures of my teeth. Most read in News TV 'Need to use these brushes twice a day with the gel (gel for 2 weeks) and just make sure I'm on top of it.' Binky Felstead cruelly mum-shamed after birth of third child Opening up on the cause of the gum disease, Binky uploaded a photo of herself from one of her pregnancies, and wrote: 'Apparently this is very common in pregnancy . 'So I'm guessing that's what caused it.' Commenting on Binky's announcement, Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer for . My number one tip for maintaining healthy gums is to make sure you prioritise your at-home oral health routine, which I'd recommend includes brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing. 'You may find an electric toothbrush helps to give you an effective clean at home if you suffer from arthritis or a condition which could impact your dexterity, and water flossers are a fantastic way to enhance your routine – providing an easier solution to traditional floss. Gum disease Gum disease is where the gums become red, swollen and sore, and bleed. It's very common, but it's important to get it checked by a dentist. Symptoms of gum disease include: your gums bleeding when you brush your teeth, floss or eat hard foods such as apples your gums becoming swollen, red and sore Gum disease can lead to: bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth your gums shrinking your teeth becoming loose or falling out 'You may want to also consider using a mouthwash to help to fight bacteria , and brushing your tongue with your toothbrush will further support this. 'Incorporating flossing into your toothbrushing routine is a great way to ensure a thorough clean, removing food debris and plaque from between the teeth and gumline. 'The benefit of flossing is that it helps you to clean areas you can't always reach with your toothbrush, which can help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.' She continued: 'Gum disease is also common in women due to hormonal influence, meaning women may experience increased susceptibility to gum disease during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause , due to fluctuating hormone levels.' Like Binky, she shared she felt pregnancy was a contributing factor to her gum disease diagnosis, which again, is common in women and it is medically referred to as Gingivitis, which is a milder form of gum disease, particularly common during the second to eighth months of pregnancy. 4 Binky shared a photo of various toothbrushes and paste on a table, and told her legion of fans that she has gum disease .
