Kaizer Chiefs news: Club World Cup reject, tax scandal hits hard

Kaizer Chiefs are eyeing former target and Mamelodi Sundowns Terrence Mashego, who was left out of the PSL Champions FIFA Club World Cup squad.
This was easy to predict after the 28-year-old amassed just four league appearances last campaign as Aubrey Modiba, Divine Lunga, and Asekho Tiwani often rotated.
Mashego is reportedly keen on leaving the Tshwane giants to secure a starting role – Kaizer Chiefs are happy to accommodate.
Kaizer Chiefs veteran Gaston Sirino is in hot water with the South African Revenue Service, who have reported R6.1 million in unpaid tax. The Uruguayan has ten days to settle the payment.
'According to the records of the South African Revenue Service, you have failed to pay your tax debt for one or more tax years and tax periods… you are requested to make full payment within 10 days from the date of this letter of demand,' a statement revealed.
'Failure to make full payment or use the above remedies may result in the following actions and possibly others: Sars may appoint any third party who presently or in the future will owe you money or hold money for you to settle your tax debt with this money.'
'A civil judgment is being entered against you, in which case a warrant of execution may be issued for the sheriff of the court to attach and sell your assets.'

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star enters rehab to address substance abuse

Seeking help Former Kaizer Chiefs star Kgaogelo Sekgota has entered rehab in order to deal with a substance abuse problem that's affected his football career. Photo: Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix Former Kaizer Chiefs player Kgaogelo Sekgota, who had the football world at his feet at the beginning of the decade, has entered rehab in a bid to deal with substance abuse. This is thought to have scuppered a potential move to Morocco, where a club was keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, who currently plays for Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC. After impressing in the colours of Polokwane United in his youth, Sekgota found himself in Lithuania, playing for FC Stumbras. He then transferred to Portuguese Primeira Liga club Vitória, but lasted one season. He returned to South Africa in 2020, and after playing for Bidvest Wits and Moroka Swallows, he moved to Kaizer Chiefs in 2021, then to Stellenbosch FC, Magesi FC, and finally Upington. During that time, he struggled with his discipline.

Springboks vs Italy: Three players who will be on a mission

The Springboks certainly won't be short on motivation when they take on Italy in their second Test in Gqeberha on Saturday, 12 July. While the Boks secured a 42-24 win in Pretoria in their first Test of the season against the Azzurri, there is much to improve on by their standards. While there were players who were on fire, there were also those whose performances wouldn't exactly be a feature in their career highlights reel. So, with another clash against the spirited Italians coming up, here are three players to watch (for different reasons). The Springbok fullback will become the eighth South African to earn 100 Test caps on Saturday. Needless to say, it's a remarkable feat, so it goes without saying that he'd want to have a blinder come the weekend. And it's certainly something he can do. When he's good, he's great. And if he fires in his full-circle moment, it will be an unforgettable occasion. Le Roux made his Test debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and his milestone will see him join Eben Etzebeth, Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, and Percy Montgomery in an elite group as Bok centurions. The flyhalf was in top form against the Barbarians, nailing all five of his attempts off the tee in extremely testing conditions and sparking the Boks' attack after coming on for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the second half. Given all the flak he's copped for his goal-kicking, that area was the most inpressive factor in an overall shining personal performance in a wet and windy Cape Town. His starting berth alongside scrumhalf Grant Williams is a mouth-watering one. And, given the wizardry magical Manie can create, we can see this as another opportunity for him to do what only he can and send out yet another reminder of his abilities (not that it's needed at this point). The Stormers loose forward was initially omitted from the Bok squad, and that alone should fuel him when he comes off the bench. Speculation was rife when Roos was left out of the initial 54-man squad. But, following Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom's injury and Roos' call-up, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus explained that his initial omission was 'nothing personal' and that they simply opted for players in better form. That alone should have a galvanising effect when he provides impact off the bench against the Azzurri. Springbok Team: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Canan Moodie, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Manie Libbok, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Ruan Nortjé, 4 Salmaan Moerat (captain), 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Thomas du Toit. Replacements: 16 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 17 Ox Nché, 18 Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 19 Cobus Wiese, 20 Evan Roos, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 23 Ethan Hooker. Orlando Pirates news: Stars consider future, Transfer path narrows

Thabo Moloisane remains on Orlando Pirates' long-term radar, and the centre-back admits he's thinking about his future. 'When you have interest in your name, it shows you're doing something right,' he told SABC Sport . 'God is in control — we'll see what happens.' With Bafana ambitions on his mind, Moloisane is staying patient, but Pirates might be forced to act soon as other clubs begin circling. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues around Relebohile Mofokeng. Despite growing interest from Europe, the club has yet to comment publicly. Last year Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos predicted that the 2024/25 campaign would be Mofokeng's last with Orlando Pirates, a belief that the player's father hopes will become reality. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba said. [Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' say's the Orlando Pirates' player's father. 'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.' Appollis' arrival and his father's public plea for a move overseas have only made the situation more complex. Could a decision come before pre-season ends?
