Tax reform expectations watered down ahead of economic summit

Anthony Albanese has all but ruled out changes to the GST as he and a united business community downplay expectations ahead of next month's productivity summit, saying the roundtable should not be overtaken by debate about tax reform. Believing there are more quickly achievable reforms than another protracted debate about tax, the government on Friday sent letters to 37 regulators instructing them to submit proposals by August 1 to reduce red tape.

Australia-US relations descending into a ‘farce' with Albanese at the helm

Shadow Cabinet Secretary Andrew Wallace says the relationship between Australia and the United States is too important for it to descend into a 'farce'. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has downplayed concerns over the strength of the US-Australia alliance, saying he is 'not worried' about relations with President Donald Trump. 'Irrespective of whether the prime minister likes or doesn't like Donald Trump, the prime minister has a responsibility to have a working relationship with the president,' Mr Wallace told Sky News host Danica De Giorgio. 'Clearly the president has got Anthony Albanese in the freezer.'

‘Incredibly tough': Calls for PM to address over-regulation and over-taxation in business

Wilson Asset Management founder Geoff Wilson says one of Australia's largest business problems is over-taxation and over-regulation, calling upon the Albanese government for an end to the 'pleasantries'. This comes amid Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's address at Australia's Economic Outlook 2025. 'It's an incredibly tough environment,' Mr Wilson told Sky News host Danica De Giorgio. 'What we need the government to do is to not overtax and overregulate – and that's the problem that all Australian companies have got at the moment. 'We don't want any more pleasantries, our small, medium-sized, and even large companies in Australia need some action by this government. 'Something has to be done.'
