Wonder Festival Spotlights ‘Evangelion' Amidst Blazing Summer Heat
Following the winter edition of Wonder Festival earlier this year, the summer version focused on promoting Evangelion , while we all melted from the heat.
As always, Wonder Festival is split into two main parts: commercial and fan-based. The former had very noticeable absences, with the likes of Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, Bandai, and Takara Tomy lacking their typically large stalls.
While Bandai and Takara Tomy did have some small showings, it was more the new Chinese manufacturers that were showing off their impressive wares.
Specifically, the likes of CCS Toys and POSE+, with the former's upcoming Ultimate Dancouga from Super Robot Wars 30 looking incredible up close (shown below).

However, the main focus this year on the commercial side was Evangelion , with a large area dedicated to new and upcoming merchandise as well as more esoteric elements.
One highlight was seeing the original artwork used in Newtype magazine back in the 90s to originally promote the TV series (shown below).
Following the commercial side of things, the fan-based offerings were enormous as usual, with a still steady stream of fan-made Armored Trooper VOTOMS kits, as well as some Layzner and Galient kits thrown in for good measure.
There was also more Armored Core stuff this year, although not so much for Armored Core VI , but more for the older games that have seen a recent resurgence in popularity online. Not least due to the digital re-releases of the first three Armored Core games on PlayStation.

In addition, there was an awful lot of Virtual On kits on show, with one stall offering enormous papercraft versions of things like the mid-game boss Jaguarandi from Virtual On Force .
Talking of Virtual On Force , one stall had every variant from the game, which made for a rather marvellous sight.
One notable point on the fan side was that there was almost nothing from Gundam GQuuuuuuX or Requiem for Vengeance , which is definitely curious, as there were other Gundam offerings, albeit sparse
As with all things Wonder Festival, it's always more interesting to see what the fans are up to, as that tends to influence the commercial side of things a few years down the road.
In any case, it was another great Wonder Festival and reinforced my love for this event, which never fails to impress and intrigue. Although I much prefer the winter event, the current Japanese summer is pretty brutal.

Say, What? — Nintendo Just Dropped A Bombshell About Mario And Princess Peach's Relationship After All These Years
Since the '80s, our favorite mustachioed plumber, Mario, rescued our blonde-haired princess, Peach, from that problematic turtle monster, Bowser. But if you thought they were madly in love and destined to be together forever, think again. Newsflash: Mario and Princess Peach are apparently just friends! Related: No, you didn't read that wrong. After decades of romantic rumors, Nintendo basically revealed the actual status of Mario and Peach's relationship. "Princess Peach and Mario are good friends," the Japanese video game company wrote in a statement this past week, "and help each other out whenever they can." The news was brought to everyone's attention by X user @KirPinkFury, who discovered this bombshell announcement via the Nintendo Today app and shared it to X on July 23. For decades, across multiple platforms and forms of media, Mario has rescued the kidnapped Princess Peach from Bowser, and sometimes he was even rewarded with a kiss. But this viral revelation changes everything we once knew about the Mushroom Kingdom's greatest hero. If this news rocked your world, here's how people online reacted: Related: If you've played Super Mario Odyssey, then you'll remember when Peach rejected him after he traveled across the galaxy to rescue her. People couldn't get over the idea that he was seemingly "friendzoned" after all these years: Related: Some folks were downright shocked and saddened by the news: Related: And finally, somebody joked that maybe his archnemesis Bowser was in charge of the company: Funny enough, technically Doug Bowser is the current president and CEO of Nintendo of America, the American branch of the Japanese company. So, yes. Bowser is the CEO. It'll be okay, everyone. We need an update on Princess Daisy and Luigi's relationship status. We contacted Nintendo for comment and'll let you know if we hear back. Don't expect to blast your way through Ghost of Yotei: "Blades are the heart of the fantasy"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Ghost of Yotei introduces the greatest Samurai technique of all time – just shooting a guy – but the developers have warned that Atsu is no Texas Red, and that blades are still king. Ghost of Yotei takes place hundreds of years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, and as a result, technology has advanced. During the recent Ghost of Yotei dedicated State of Play, footage revealed Atsu can start blasting, as she has access to firearms in the game. However, the developers have assured us that Yotei isn't about to become a shooting game, and good old fashioned sword swinging is still its name. GamesRadar+ features editor Andrew Brown spoke to Ghost of Yotei's creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell and asked specifically about the place of guns in the game. Fox dubbed firearms "not incredibly efficient" in line with how they were back in 1603. He elaborated, "Firearms have a role, and they are incredibly deadly when used at the right time," adding, "but it's not like Gun Kata, where the firearm is the melee weapon. Blades are the heart of the fantasy." However, Atsu isn't completely out of luck when it comes to fighting at range, as she has access to new melee weapons that help with that – namely a spear and a flail that can dispatch enemies in no time. And of course, she'll still have access to bows, which are probably the ideal ranged weapon anyway if you're going to take a stealthy approach – and you won't have to deal with Jin's annoying uncle berating you for it either! Although, in my eyes, nothing beats strolling into a camp and announcing to the whole population that you're here for a scrap. Ghost of Yotei "isn't going to rush you through anything" and "focuses on player freedom more than any game Sucker Punch has ever made," with clues and activities for all play styles.

No, Ghost of Yotei won't force you to swap weapons, even if you should, as the open-world game "would like players best to learn to switch weapons"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Ghost of Yotei co-director Nate Fox has confirmed that you'll be able to play the game in its entirety without switching to a second weapon if you'd like. Ghost of Yotei is taking place hundreds of years after Ghost of Tsushima, and due to this, Atsu has way more gear in her arsenal than Jin ever did. Not only does she have access to guns (which the developers have assured are not going to be overpowered), but she can also equip way more bladed weapons than the original game's own protagonist could. These include dual-wielded swords, a spear, and a flail – but if you want to continue Jin's legacy of just using a sword, the game won't punish you. Speaking to IGN, Ghost of Yotei co-director Nate Fox says, "the game definitely would like players best to learn to switch weapons when it is appropriate, cause it's the most efficient way to play." However, he concedes, "let's face it, people sometimes want to play in the way that makes them feel the coolest. And the game will not hurt you if you do that." Fox assures fans "if you want to play with just two swords in each hand because it looks cool, you can play through the whole game that way" – although he presumably means a sword in each hand, as I'm not sure Atsu is able to hold four swords at once (but she should be, because that'd be sick). This approach seems to be par for the course for the upcoming sequel, as the developers have said that Ghost of Yotei "focuses on player freedom more than any game Sucker Punch has ever made." GamesRadar+ got to speak to Ghost of Yotei creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell as well, in an interview that you can read through here.
