ISKANDAR PUTERI, July 15 (Bernama) -- Global data centre operator DayOne is deepening its long-term commitment to Malaysia by positioning the country as a key hub in the regional digital supply chain, with major infrastructure and ecosystem investments centred in Johor.
DayOne Data Centers Malaysia Sdn Bhd general manager Jimmy Yan said the company is currently developing two hyperscale campuses in Nusajaya Tech Park and Kempas Tech Park, each covering hundreds of acres and targeting a combined capacity of up to 500 megawatts.
'Our goal is not just to build data centres, but to embed ourselves in Malaysia's digital economy by localising our supply chain, developing skilled local talent, and building long-term partnerships with both federal and state governments,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview.
According to Jimmy, the project is already generating significant economic spillover, with an estimated RM400 million ringgit in supply chain investments already recorded, driven by the localisation of vendors and partners.
He added that DayOne aims to transition from 'investing in Malaysia to 'Made in Malaysia'', making the country not just a base for operations but a core manufacturing and supply chain hub for the company's global infrastructure needs.
'We are bringing in our ecosystem, not only our hyperscale clients and technology (tech) giants, but also artificial intelligence (AI) startups and application developers to set up regional operations here,' he said.
Jimmy also said the company's presence in Johor is closely aligned with the state's push under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework, further reinforcing Johor's status as an emerging digital powerhouse.
In terms of employment, DayOne is projected to create around 1,000 direct jobs and up to 5,000 indirect jobs over the next few years through its contractors, suppliers, and ecosystem partners.

Sarawak must move beyond upstream O&G, says Petros VP

Joseph says Sarawak's shallow industrial base limits the state's economic resilience because it relies heavily on primary sector activities. – Bernama photo KUCHING (July 16): Sarawak has yet to tap its full potential in the oil and gas sector as the focus remains largely on upstream activities, said Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) Senior Vice President of Growth, Datuk Joseph Podtung. He said Sarawak's shallow industrial base limits the state's economic resilience because it relies heavily on primary sector activities. 'Extract, export, repeat. That's the cycle. No strong mid or downstream development, no supporting service ecosystem, and no multiplier effect. 'If we keep exporting, we miss out on far greater opportunities. Developing domestic industries will create value chains, jobs and innovations. That is how we build long-term resilience. 'This is not about choosing between LNG and domestic use. It's about unlocking more. More for Sarawak's own use. More retained value. More future-proofing. 'It benefits not just Sarawak, but Malaysia as a whole. We are shifting from a volume mindset to a value mindset,' he said during the plenary session titled Sarawak Gas Roadmap: Unlocking the Potential of Natural Gas for a Sustainable Future at International Energy Week 2025 held here on Tuesday. Joseph added that natural gas is the key for Petros to move downstream, develop hydrogen, and power new industries across Sarawak. He outlined four regional hubs as part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, each with its own role in expanding the state's energy ecosystem. In Miri, onshore gas drilling resumes after 30 years, alongside a 500-megawatt power plant due by 2027. In Samalaju, the Bintulu-Samalaju pipeline, set to complete this year, will power heavy industries. Bintulu is advancing downstream with a methanol plant already running. However, in Kuching, he highlighted that despite being the capital of an energy-rich state, it has no pipelines and still depends on imported liquified petroleum gas and fossil diesel. 'Without action now, Kuching risks being left behind in the shift to a low-carbon economy. But Kuching has what matters, access to clean power, liveability that attracts talent, and proximity to 30 per cent of global maritime trade,' he said. Joseph said Kuching's low-carbon development will take place in three waves. The first wave will see the LNG-to-power project begin. LNG will be delivered via a floating storage and regasification unit and a subsea pipeline, supplying gas to a new combined cycle power plant. This will provide reliable, low-carbon electricity for Kuching and the wider Borneo region. The second wave builds on this foundation by developing a low-carbon industrial park to attract high-value industries. These include low-carbon petrochemicals, hydrogen clusters and digital sectors. 'And the final phase will transform Kuching's low-carbon hub into a global destination for investment, focusing on high-value added downstream products, such as low-carbon hydrogen for steel manufacturing, and low-carbon ammonia for fertilisers and other specialty chemicals,' he said. He also revealed that a global master planner will be appointed to develop the master plan for the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub and Deep Sea Port. Petros has previously secured two anchor partners, China Jiangsu International and Sumitomo Corporation to provide capital, capabilities and global investor networks to develop the Kuching Low-Carbon Industrial Hub. 'By anchoring demand in Kuching, it opens the need to further develop offshore resources. We have a demand-led pathway to unlock the untapped reserves of Western Sarawak, both natural gas and the CCS development,' he said. At its full scale, the SGR is expected to attract RM300 billion in investments and generate RM120 billion in annual output, which he said is close to what the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone is projected to produce at RM125 billion. downstream oil and gas Petros Sarawak

Malaysia's stock market slips as investors eye tariffs and slower rate cuts

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — Bursa Malaysia closed lower on Wednesday on continuous profit-taking in selected heavyweights led by the financial services and utilities sectors. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 13.90 points or 0.91 per cent to 1,511.50 from Tuesday's close of 1,525.40 The benchmark index opened 1.63 points lower at 1,523.77 and moved between 1,510.14 and 1,526.29 throughout the session. The market breadth was negative, with 727 decliners outpacing 335 gainers and 432 counters unchanged, while 951 were untraded and eight suspended. Turnover improved to 3.18 billion shares worth RM2.44 billion, compared with 3.07 billion shares worth RM2.36 billion on Tuesday UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said telecommunications counters led gains among FBM KLCI constituents, while consumer discretionary names bore the brunt of the sell-off. However, across the broader market, all indices closed in negative territory, reflecting the cautious mood despite recent domestic interest rate cuts, he added. 'Adding to the subdued tone, Indonesia's successful negotiation of a 19 per cent tariff rate with the United States (US) further dampened sentiment as Malaysia awaits clarity on its tariff status, currently set at 25 per cent. 'This development highlights Malaysia's diminishing competitive edge in regional trade, particularly against Vietnam and Indonesia,' he told Bernama. Mohd Sedek also said market jitters intensified over US President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on the European Union (EU) and Mexico, stoking concerns that such measures could rekindle inflationary pressures following the stronger consumer price index (CPI) readings. 'US headline CPI accelerated to 2.7 per cent year-on-year in June, up from 2.4 per cent in May, prompting investors to reassess expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts. 'A steady flow of negative tariff headlines, coupled with waning hopes for near-term monetary easing in the US, continued to weigh on risk sentiment,' he added. UMK Signs MoUs To Boost National Rare Earth Industry

KOTA BHARU, July 16 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) today signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen the integrated, strategic and high-impact development of the country's rare earth elements (REE) industry. Its vice-chancellor Prof Dr Arham Abdullah said the first MoU involves a Triple Helix synergy-based collaboration between UMK, the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA). He said REE is now recognised as one of Malaysia's five strategic minerals and plays a key role in modern technologies, including renewable energy, electronics, defence and healthcare. 'In Malaysia, particularly in Kelantan, there are significant deposits of non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE). However, geological features such as ion-adsorption clay make the extraction process more challenging and require a sustainable, innovative and environmentally friendly approach. 'This collaboration underlines that the development of the REE industry cannot be done in isolation. Its success depends on strong synergy among research institutions, government agencies and industry players to ensure the technologies developed are sustainable, relevant and scalable at the national level,' he said in a statement. He added that UMK also has a group of young, proactive and competent researchers capable of developing REE solutions across the value chain, which further enhances the value of the signed MoUs. Commenting further, Arham said the second MoU involves bilateral cooperation between UMK and Upstream Downstream Process & Services Sdn Bhd, focusing on technology transfer and direct industry testing. 'As an entrepreneurial university, UMK strives to balance academic research needs with industrial application. This collaboration reflects UMK's commitment to driving the development of the local REE ecosystem in Kelantan,' he said. -- BERNAMA
