Owen Farrell set for British and Irish Lions call-up as Elliot Daly injury replacement

Flying out: Owen Farrell is poised to join up with the British and Irish Lions squad in Australia (Adam Davy/PA Wire)
Owen Farrell is set for a sensational late call-up to the British and Irish Lions squad during their tour of Australia.
The former England captain's addition by father and head coach Andy Farrell is expected to be confirmed on Thursday, ahead of the official squad announcement for Saturday's clash with the New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney.

Owen Farrell will be named as a replacement for Saracens team-mate Elliot Daly, who was injured during the Lions' 52-12 thrashing of the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday.
Daly was drafted into the team late at Suncorp Stadium to start at full-back after an illness suffered by Hugo Keenan, only just recovered from a calf problem, but was forced off in the second half after sustaining an injury to his forearm while attempting to make a tackle.
The versatile England back looked in considerable pain as he received initial treatment on the pitch and then had the area heavily iced on the bench.
Daly subsequently underwent an X-ray and reports on Thursday claimed that he had suffered a suspected broken arm.

He would become the second player ruled out of the remainder of the tour in a matter of days after Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams flew home following a hamstring injury suffered while scoring his second try in Saturday's opener against the Western Force in Perth, with Scotland's Ben White drafted in as a replacement.

The Lions also lost the services of Scottish prop Zander Fagerson to a calf issue ahead of the tour, while the likes of Ireland captain Caelan Doris were unavailable for selection due to injury.
Like Williams, the injury to Daly is significant for the Lions after both players stated strong early claims for involvement against Australia in the three-Test series that starts in Brisbane on July 19.

Andy Farrell appears poised to replace Daly with son Owen, who missed out on selection for the initial 38-man touring squad after a disappointing, injury-plagued lone season in France with Racing 92.
However, there remained plenty of speculation that the 33-year-old - who received a great reception from Lions fans while on punditry duties for Sky Sports during the 1888 Cup loss to Argentina in Dublin - could be called up at a later date.
Farrell's significant experience and positional versatility - he can play either at fly-half or in the centres - made him a strong candidate for involvement, having earned 112 England caps and previously been involved in each of the Lions tours of 2013, 2017 and 2021 under Warren Gatland, making 19 appearances and starting every Test of the drawn series in New Zealand eight years ago.
Farrell recently returned to Saracens - where he previously spent 16 years - on a two-year contract after only a year in France, while he has not played for England since stepping back from international rugby in the aftermath of the 2023 World Cup in order to 'prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing'.

Why Coates is ready to give NSW a Bellyache in Origin

Queensland winger Xavier Coates is ready to shine in the State of Origin decider and scupper the hopes of the coach who shaped him into the elite player he is. Coates is one of several Melbourne players in the Maroons side who will come up against Storm coach Craig Bellamy in his role of NSW advisor to head coach Laurie Daley. It is an interesting dynamic but Coates, 24, has become the try scoring machine he is largely due to Bellamy's influence. "I wouldn't be the same player without him," Coates said. "He has stern conversations with everyone, not just one player. He doesn't hold a hierarchy there at the Melbourne Storm, everyone is the same and if you are not doing your role you will hear about it. "He is a really great coach and he has mentored me very well down in Melbourne and I'm so thankful for him doing that. "It's all down to your preparation really leading into a game. If you want to be a consistent player you have to be performing consistently in training sessions and that will follow suit into games. That is the main thing I take away from Bellsa." Coates has shown his versatility in this series, playing right and left wing in the opening two games. The Maroons have not allowed media viewing of any team training this camp and Coates wasn't giving away which side he would play in Sydney. "I'm not too sure, I have to wait and see. Wherever I play I have to do my job and that's what I want to do Wednesday night," he said. Coates was used to playing right wing before he went to the Storm in 2022 from Brisbane. He has shown great aptitude at both after making adjustments to his technique. "I switched sides and if you move sides, the way you jump has to change," he said. "On the right-hand side, I was jumping off my left leg and when I came over to the left side, I had to learn to jump off my right, so doing that was a little bit of change. "Everyone in the NRL is pretty versatile, they can play multiple positions, left and right, so it was probably a good change for me to get used to the left-hand side as well. The Maroons hung on to win 26-24 in Perth after leading 26-6 at halftime and know they must be better in Sydney. "We all know within the playing group our second-half performance wasn't up to scratch so that's something we want to improve on," Coates said ahead of his 13th Origin match. "We have sat down and done a review of the game and where we can improve, so we will look to better that in this camp and hopefully follow that through to Wednesday night when we play."

Hyett relishing chance to show what England can do

England captain Millie Hyett believes the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series is a fantastic opportunity for her side to show the rugby world how good they are, starting against old rivals Scotland in Round 1. The two sides face off against one another in the opening round of fixtures of the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, South Wales. Advertisement It is the second edition of the U20 tournament, which debuted in Italy last year, when England won two of their three matches. Twenty-year-old centre Hyett, who tasted Premiership Women's Rugby glory with Gloucester Hartpury earlier this year, is keen for England to focus on their own game and let everything else take care of itself. 'I'm excited for [the Scotland game] and I think it'll be a really good battle,' said Worcester native Hyett. 'We know they're going to be physical and turn up on the day, but it's just about playing our game and doing what we're good at. 'It's a really good chance for this U20 group to showcase what they can do. We've been working really hard this past six or seven months and it's exciting to show what we're about on the pitch.' Advertisement Following on from the 2024 Women's Summer Series, 14 players across the six countries went on to achieve senior honours during the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations, including England's Lilli Ives Campion. And Hyett, who took up rugby aged four after growing up with three brothers who all played the sport, highlighted the importance of the Women's Summer Series for giving players the opportunity to stand out and to use it as a springboard to break into the senior team. 'In the top bracket of the older year of U20s, it's a good step and good time to prepare yourself for senior rugby, whether that's for PWR or the Red Roses. It's everyone's dream to play for the Red Roses,' she added. 'Senior coaches are watching this, and we've already seen players like Millie David, Sarah Parry and Lilli too kick on, so it's great that progression is there.' Advertisement With women's rugby on an upward trajectory, the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series is a big chance for stars of the future to gain vital international experience, graduate along the development pathway, while also inspiring a new generation of rugby fans. Spread across three dates during July, England will also face Italy on 11 July before rounding off their campaign against France six days later. Julie Paterson, Chief of Rugby at Six Nations Rugby, added: 'The Women's Summer Series is an essential part of the strategy and commitment of Six Nations Rugby, and the six unions and federations, to proactively support the creation and growth of opportunities in the women's game.'

New-look Matildas stunned by world No.56 Panama

Veteran striker Michelle Heyman has fluffed a last-gasp chance to score the equaliser as the Matildas suffered a shock 1-0 loss to world No.56 Panama in Bunbury. Panama stunned the home crowd when they took a 56th-minute lead through 19-year-old substitute Sherline King in Saturday's wet and windy clash in Western Australia. Australia pushed hard for an equaliser, and it looked set to arrive in the 96th minute when a goalkeeper's save fell at the feet of Heyman. But her reflex left-foot strike from point-blank range sent the ball over the crossbar, with Panama's players celebrating wildly upon hearing the fulltime whistle just moments later. It marked the Matildas' first loss under new coach Joe Montemurro, who had led the side to a 3-0 win and 1-1 draw against Slovenia in his previous two matches in charge. Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Katrina Gorry and Clare Wheeler were all absent from the current international window. Ellie Carpenter, Mackenzie Arnold, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Sharn Freeier exited the squad following the Slovenia series, while Amy Sayer and Charli Grant were rested. Montemurro made a whopping 10 changes to his starting side against the Central Americans, with Kaitlyn Torpey the only player in the starting XI who also started in last week's draw with Slovenia. Panama's day started on a horrible note, with goalkeeper Yenith Bailey lasting less than a minute before hyperextending her left knee while attempting a save. The Matildas controlled possession and territory in the first half, but there were still danger signs. Tanner was at it again in the 41st minute, with her powerful strike from a difficult angle slamming into the post. In between Tanner's threats, the Matildas wasted several good chances. Their best first-half opportunity fell at the feet of Emily Gielnik, who had the goal at her mercy but got her timing all wrong as she attempted to connect with Holly McNamara's dangerous cross. King gave Panama the lead when she latched on to Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah's save to power home a volley. The Matildas enjoyed 66 per cent possession but only unleashed four shots on target for the match.
