China debuts economic data on service robots as humanoid industry grows

the country's growing robotics industry

While China is already the world's leading industrial robot market, accounting for over half of global installations, the country's service robot sector – including professional, consumer, and medical robots – is also rapidly expanding, fuelled by the rise of start-ups such as Hangzhou-based
Unitree Robotics and Shenzhen-based
UBTech Robotics
According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday, the output of service robots in China – used for tasks like delivery and cleaning – jumped 35.7 per cent to nearly 1.5 million units in the first two months of the year.
Service robots outperformed industrial robots in both growth and output. In January and February, the output of industrial robots reached 91,088 units, a 27 per cent increase from a year earlier, NBS data showed.

NBS statistician Sun Xiao said in a statement that the combined output from both segments, along with industrial control computers and systems, contributed to a 9.1 per cent growth in the added value of digital product manufacturing.

Chinese power bank maker suspends production after defects trigger recall, aviation ban

One of China's biggest portable power bank makers has suspended production for at least six months and closed its stores on major Chinese e-commerce platforms after a massive recall of its products and the decision by the country's civil aviation authority to ban unlicensed power banks on flights. Shenzhen-based Romoss Technology, which sells its products in dozens of countries around the world, notified its employees that the company would suspend operations for six months starting on Monday, according to a report by Chinese media outlet Jiemian on Sunday. Meanwhile, its online shops on e-commerce platforms Taobao, and Pinduoduo have been taken offline. Products listed on websites serving overseas clients, including Temu, were also offline as of Monday. Taobao is operated by Alibaba Group Holding, which owns the South China Morning Post. The future of Romoss was thrown into uncertainty after its products were found to have serious defects that could lead to fires. On June 16, the company recalled nearly 500,000 portable chargers from three models due to problems with battery cells manufactured between June 5, 2023, and July 31, 2024. Anker last month recalled over 712,000 units across seven power bank models. Photo: Handout

Hong Kong lawmakers call for facial recognition system at upgraded land crossing

Hong Kong legislators have called for facial recognition technology to be adopted at the upgraded Huanggang land crossing while giving an initial green light to a HK$1.75 billion government proposal to site border clearance facilities in the complex. At a meeting of the Legislative Council's security panel on Monday, some lawmakers also expressed concern that the expanded Huanggang checkpoint, which was designed to handle 200,000 passengers and 15,000 vehicles every day between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, could overload nearby traffic. In addition to co-location arrangements that allow travellers to clear immigration channels in both jurisdictions at a single site, Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung told the panel that a new clearance model would be adopted. The two governments would set up counters side by side inside the port to enhance border clearance efficiency, he said. The 'collaborative inspection and joint clearance' model, currently used at some checkpoints between Macau and Zhuhai, will allow travellers to queue up once for immigration clearance, shortening the time from around half an hour to five minutes. 'These efforts aim to facilitate the efficient and smooth flow of people and goods, and thus strengthen the connectivity between Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area,' Tang said.
