He was released early from prison in 2021 for good behaviour. During his time in prison, Guede started dating a 25-year-old woman, who later ended their relationship in 2023 and pressed charges against him, according to local Italian media. Guede has been placed under a "special surveillance" regime since last year, when police began their investigation into the alleged sexual assault, Sky News reports. According to a Rome court ruling, Guede must inform the police anytime he leaves Viterbo, his city of residence. He has been fitted with an electronic ankle tag and was banned from having any contact with the woman behind the sexual assault allegations. Carlo Mezzetti, his lawyer, told CNN that Guede was innocent and feared he would not get a fair trial given his previous conviction. Some 100,000 photos, thousands of chats and audio messages between Guede and the unnamed victim are among the evidence set to be presented in the trial, according to the media outlet. Ms Kercher, 21, from Coulsdon, Surrey, was found half-naked with her throat slit in Perugia, Italy, in September 2007. The exchange student from the University of Leeds had been stabbed 47 times. Watch weeping Amanda Knox break down as her slander conviction is UPHELD in final twist of Meredith Kercher murder saga Ms Kercher shared her flat with her American roommate, Amanda Knox. Ms Knox was convicted alongside her then-boyfriend, Italian Raffaele Sollecito - but they both were fully acquitted by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015 following a sensational legal battle. Though Ms Knox remains convicted of slander for accusing her former nightclub boss Patrick Lumumba of Ms Kercher's murder in 2007. At the time of Guede's release, Ms Knox said that Guede has been "able to cause harm to more young women" since his release. She wrote in a post on X: "Guede was never held fully accountable for murdering Meredith, as he was only convicted of rape and of 'participating in the murder.' "Essentially he was charged with being an accomplice for a crime he committed alone. He was sentenced to 30 years. 6 Knox accompanied by security guards arrives in court for the preliminary hearings into the murder of British student Meredith Kercher Credit: EPA 6 Knox and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito looking on outside the rented house where the 21-year-old Brit Meredith was found dead Credit: Associated Press "On appeal, that was reduced to 16. He was released on 'good behavior' after serving 13 years..." Knox has since gone on to become an author and journalist and has spoken openly about her treatment during the ordeal. In 2020, Knox told Good Morning America how she felt she was carrying the burden of Guede's crime. "I continue to this day to be shocked that he is the forgotten killer," Knox said. "The one who was quietly tucked away, convicted of a lesser crime, and does not have to live with the burden of forever being associated with Meredith's death. "I do know that many, many people have suffered a great deal because of what he did.'

4 people shot at a class reunion in Chattanooga, no arrests announced
At least four people were injured in a shooting at an alumni event in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Saturday. A spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department confirmed that all four people were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not provide information regarding a suspect or whether any arrests have been made. The shooting occurred at the Tyner Recreation Complex, where it appears a multi-class reunion was being held for alumni of Tyner High School. The school is now named Tyner Middle High Academy and was reopened earlier this year after the former campus was torn down to make way for a new facility. A Facebook post from the Tyner Alumni Association earlier this month boasted that 38 different graduating classes were participating in this year's alumni weekend. An email to the alumni association requesting comment from NBC News was not immediately returned Sunday. Jeoff Herman, who witnessed the shooting, told NBC News affiliate WRCB that the scene was "real bad." "Everybody was just having a good time," Herman said. "Then all the sudden shots just started going everywhere. Little kids and babies and everything were on the ground."

Freedom Flotilla's Handala sets sail for Gaza to break Israel blockade
Last month, activist Greta Thunberg, MEP Rima Hassan, and journalist Omar Faiad were among those detained by Israel after they attempted to take a 'symbolic' amount of aid to Gaza – a Palestinian region under illegal Israeli occupation. Their Madleen boat, sailing under a British flag meaning it was under UK jurisdiction, was detained in international waters before its occupants were taken to Israel. Now, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has said that a new ship, named Handala, had set sail from Syracuse in Sicily, also with the aim of delivering aid to Gaza. READ MORE: 'Good case' Israel breached international law with Madleen seizure 'This mission is for the children of Gaza,' the FFC said. 'Just weeks ago, Israeli forces illegally seized our boat 'Madleen' and abducted 12 unarmed civilians aboard her in international waters. 'Since March, more than 6572 Palestinians have been killed, over 23,000 injured, and hundreds shot while waiting for food. The children of Gaza now face famine, disease, and trauma few of us can imagine. 'We are not governments. We are people taking action where institutions have failed. We are not backing down.' The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is setting sail again. Join us in Siracusa, Italy — or online — on July 13 at 10:30 CEST (GMT+2) as we launch 'Handala' on its journey toward Gaza. The FFC has a live tracker on its website allowing users to follow the progress of the aid boat. It states: "As the Handala sails toward Gaza to challenge Israel's ongoing blockade, a blockade deemed illegal under international law, there is a real and well-documented risk of interception by Israeli naval forces. "Past Flotilla's have faced violent raids, unlawful detentions, and the obstruction of humanitarian missions. In this context, the tracker is not simply a navigation tool; it is a form of protection. "By continuously broadcasting the location, the tracker allows supporters, journalists, legal observers, and human rights organizations around the world to follow the vessel in real time." The @GazaFFlotilla boat #Handala left the Sicilian port of Siracusa today, on the way to one last stop before continuing onwards to #BreakTheSiege & blockade of #Gaza. Canadian Dr. @yipengGe was on board, helping to bring much-needed medical aid #ForTheChildrenOfGaza — Canada Boat to Gaza (@CanadaBoatGaza) July 13, 2025 In 2010, the Israeli military attacked an aid ship bound for Gaza owned by the Humanitarian Relief Foundation – the Mavi Marmara – in international waters, killing 10 people on board and injuring dozens more. Israel further prevented aid sailings to Gaza in 2011, 2015, and 2018. In May 2025, the FFC blamed Israel after drones allegedly attacked another of its vessels carrying aid to Gaza, the Conscience, in international waters off Malta. Israel cut off Gaza from all imports, including food and medicine, at the beginning of March. It has allowed some aid to enter the region through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (an Israel and US controlled group) since the end of May. READ MORE: The whole world is watching the Madleen's journey to Gaza on social media The GHF's executive director is Johnnie Moore, an evangelical preacher and former adviser to Donald Trump. The GHF controls four distribution sites in the strip, down from some 400 under the previous UN-led system. More than 130 leading charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in Gaza issued a joint call for an end to the 'deadly' GHF aid distribution scheme earlier this month. On Friday, the UN said that at least 798 people have been killed while trying to receive food aid in the Gaza Strip since the end of May – with 615 of those near to a GHF site.
