Epoxy flooring facelift for airport

Kolkata: Kolkata airport on Thursday unveiled a glitzy epoxy flooring near gate 25 at the northern-end of the departure terminal's security hold area (SHA), replacing the dull, worn-out dark grey and blue carpets with a white, yellow, and grey floor that added a dash of cheer to the terminal's look and feel.
Over the next few months, carpets at the other boarding gates will be removed, and the epoxy flooring will be extended to the other end of the SHA. The cost of the floor facelift is Rs 7 crore.
The carpets are now laid across 43,000 sq ft of floor near boarding gates that lead to 18 aerobridges in the facility. In use since the terminal's launch on Jan 23, 2013, the carpets long outlived their utility and were in crying need of an upgrade. Nearly 10 crore flyers who took flights out of the airport in past 11 years walked over this carpeted section, causing them to get frayed. They also gathered dust and stains from constant use.
"It has not only enhanced aesthetics of the terminal, it will be more durable, easy to maintain, chemical resistant and cost-effective," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria.

Among its various routes, the New Delhi to Varanasi stretch records the highest average speed of 95 km/h, while the Coimbatore to Bengaluru Cantonment line operates at a slower average of 58 km/h. The train's longest route spans 759 km between New Delhi and Varanasi, whereas the shortest runs 296 km from Gorakhpur to Lucknow, offering travelers a range of journey options. The Vande Bharat Express typically has two classes of coaches: AC Executive Class (EC) and AC Chair Car (CC). A standard 16-coach Vande Bharat train includes 14 AC Chair Car coaches and two Executive Class coaches, with a total seating capacity of 1,128 passengers. The AC Executive Class coaches offer a premium experience, with features like 2×2 seating configuration, reclining and rotating seats, and a seating capacity of 52 passengers per coach. The AC Chair Car coaches have a 2×3 seating configuration with retractable seats. Take your pick: Pre-puja bus ride to Siliguri comes for 5,000, flight costs 10,500; train berths sold out
Kolkata: A pre-Durga Puja bus ride from Kolkata to Siliguri may cost you between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000, a bus seat booking app shows. Till 10 days ago, airfares were not much higher, with a Kolkata-Bagdogra flight ticket priced at Rs 5,800-Rs 6,000. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At present, airfares have shot up to Rs 8,500-Rs 10,500. These fares are applicable between Sept 24 and 26. Train berths for the dates are already sold out. The regular fare for such buses, as recommended by STA, is Rs 1,300-Rs 1,500. However, on an average, tickets are available between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,500 during normal times. Highlighting this anomaly in fares, bus lovers' group Kolkata Bus-o-pedia has approached the state, requesting a stop to this exploitation. Transport department sources said they will meet private long-distance bus operators in this regard soon. "Why should reaching home during Durga Puja cost a fortune? Thousands in Bengal plan visits home — from Kolkata to Siliguri, from Howrah to Cooch Behar, and across districts — during puja. For many, this is the only time of the year they get to reunite with family. With train berths sold out months ago and flights often unaffordable, private buses are the only option for many. But this necessity is being exploited by a few private operators, who are charging Rs 5,000 for a Volvo bus ticket from Kolkata to Siliguri — a 574-km route that should normally cost around Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,500, according to STA guidelines," said Aniket Banerjee, general secretary, Kolkata Bus-o-pedia. The group also provided a comparative fare analysis. "The pre-puja fare translates to around Rs 8-Rs 8.5 per km with over 40 seats still vacant on each bus. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In comparison, the Kolkata-Indore Volvo Sleeper fare on Sept 24 to 26 is Rs 3,800, translating to Rs 2.3/km for the 1,620-km trip. Even the Jodhpur-Bengaluru Volvo, one of the longest bus routes in the country at 1,940 km, has a fare of Rs 2,550, translating to Rs 1.3/km. So why are people being asked to pay 3-4 times more to travel less than one-third of that distance? Some operators are still offering Kolkata-Siliguri Volvo tickets at Rs 2,000 on peak dates — proving fair pricing is possible, even in the festive season" the group posted on Facebook. "While dynamic pricing may be justified to an extent, what we're witnessing here is blatant profiteering," Banerjee said. The Kolkata Bus-o-pedia community has urged the transport department to immediately step in and "introduce an upper fare cap in peak seasons, regulate private bus operators through checks and penalties, and ensure durable, affordable public transport remains accessible to all". Experts associated with the transport system explain that the practice of increasing ticket prices based on demand is known as "dynamic fare". "Dynamic fare is also applied to flight tickets. This system allows those who book tickets well in advance to get them at a relatively lower price. Additionally, ticket prices are increased on weekends and other holidays," said an operator at Esplanade. Arun Kumar Ghosh, owner of Shyamoli Transport, said, "It is not possible to operate vehicles at govt-determined fares because the maintenance cost of AC Volvo buses is very high, and fuel prices are continuously rising. That's why we have dynamic fares. Flight fares on the same route are not the same every day. Even for trains, fares vary with Tatkal and Premium Tatkal bookings. Why should buses be an exception?" But most leading operators clarified none of their tickets are ever as exorbitant as in the range of Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 so early before the pujas.

Bengaluru–Chennai expressway: Cars to pay Rs 185-190 one-way on Karnataka stretch
Bengaluru: Car and jeep users using the newly built Karnataka stretch of the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway travelling from Hedigenabele (near Hoskote) to Sundarapalya (near KGF) will soon have to pay Rs 185 for a single journey and Rs 275 for a round trip. In the opposite direction — from Sundarapalya to Hedigenabele — the toll is slightly higher: Rs 190 for a single trip and Rs 280 for a round trip. This comes as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) finalised toll charges for the 71km section connecting Hoskote and KGF (Bethamangala), which has been unofficially open to traffic for over seven months. Tolls will be charged based on distance, with four plazas located at Hedigenabele, Agrahara, Krishnarajapura, and Sundarapalya. Monthly passes for cars cost Rs 6,105 (50 trips) in one direction and Rs 6,260 in the reverse. While the expressway's smooth surface and high-speed limits (up to 120 kmph) have appealed to regular commuters, the toll charges could dampen their enthusiasm. A senior NHAI official said toll collection will begin shortly after system integration and coordination with the district administration. Since the road opened unofficially, violations have raised red flags, particularly the unauthorised entry of two-wheelers, which are banned. Incidents of bikes sneaking through incomplete boundary walls have led to accidents, prompting the NHAI to seek permission to deploy home guards at toll plazas and vulnerable spots. "Two-wheeler riders have been entering through gaps in the fencing. This is a serious safety risk. We've asked for clearance to station home guards until the boundary wall is fully built," the official said. The expressway's use is expected to dip once toll collection begins, but officials are optimistic it will still offer value to commuters seeking faster access to eastern Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
