AAI to shift residential colony to Nagerbazar

Kolkata: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is set to shift its residential colony from its current location near airport's gate 1 to a site close to the Ordnance Factory in Nagerbazar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The existing colony plot will be converted into a cargo complex, allowing the airport to expand westward across VIP Road. Construction of a tunnel is underway to link the airport operational area with the proposed cargo complex. The focus at the new the residential area will be on transit accommodations for officials and a large campus for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed at Kolkata airport. Decades ago, the plot of the new site, spread across 12 acres, was leased to Air India for residential quarters. Following Air India's privatisation, the land was returned to AAI, paving the way for this redevelopment project, airport officials said. According to plans, the plot will serve a dual purpose. On a 7-acre portion, AAI will construct a transit accommodation facility for junior officials transferred to Kolkata, along with new official quarters for the airport director and the regional executive director (east). A community hall is also planned within this segment to host programmes and official functions. "Most of the quarters in the existing colony are vacant because most of the staff prefer rental accommodation to avail of the handsome house rent allowance. In the new colony, the quarters have been done away with except for the two top officials and a transit accommodation will be provided," an official said. The remaining 5 acres will be developed into a residential and training campus for CISF personnel who handle airport security. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The sanctioned strength of CISF at Kolkata airport is 2,130, of which AAI is mandated to provide housing for 55%. Currently, CISF personnel are housed in scattered accommodations at Narayanpur and Sharad Colony, posing logistical challenges. The new consolidated facility, expected to cost Rs 210 crore, aims to resolve this by offering centralised housing and training infrastructure. The proposed CISF complex will include two multi-storied bachelor barracks to accommodate 1,177 male personnel, and a G+5 barrack for 250 female personnel. Additional infrastructure will include a security training centre, a dog kennel, a convention hall, and a dedicated armoury. Officials confirmed that the proposal for the CISF complex has been sent for approval, and construction is slated to be complete by 2027. "This redevelopment is essential for accommodating the growing CISF strength. It will also ensure improving living conditions for security personnel and seamless transition for newly posted staff," airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria said.

Kolkata Airport To Get A New Terminal, Here's How Domestic Flyers Will Benefit?

Last Updated: Domestic flyers to enjoy more space as the existing terminal becomes fully domestic; new terminal aims to boost global reach by 2030. Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is preparing for a major shift. A new terminal building, part of a Rs 4,200 crore Phase II expansion, is set to handle both domestic and international flights. Once it opens, the current terminal will be dedicated solely to domestic flights. As per Telegraph India, Airport Director Pravat Ranjan Beuria shared, 'Domestic passenger numbers are far higher than international, so this change will improve convenience and capacity." How Big Is the Gap in Passenger Numbers? The contrast in traffic is quite stark. On a recent day, the airport handled over 46,000 domestic passengers on nearly 300 flights, compared to just 4,600 international flyers on 35 flights. 'Domestic travel is clearly dominant. This move will make flying smoother and more convenient," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. What Will the New Terminal Offer? It's expected to handle 11 million passengers annually—9 million international and 2 million domestic. What Happens to the Current Terminal? Once the international facilities shift to the new terminal, the current terminal will gain extra space. This will allow the airport to accommodate up to five million more domestic passengers each year. Facilities like immigration counters, customs areas, and duty-free shops will be moved out, freeing up space for growing local demand. When Will It Be Ready? The project is set to complete by 2030. Meanwhile, officials continue efforts to attract international carriers, especially to Europe. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 11:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘From 26 million passengers to 45 million annually': Kolkata Airport's old domestic terminal to be demolished for new international facility

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata is set for a major expansion, with plans underway to demolish the old domestic terminal and construct a new international facility. Officials said this expansion will help future-proof the airport against rising passenger demand in the coming decades and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub in eastern India. 'The current integrated terminal, spread over 222,973 square metres, is a workhorse, presently handling 8,460 peak-hour passengers — 5,500 domestic and 2,960 international. With an annual passenger capacity of 26 million (2.6 crore), this is expected to reach saturation by 2025–26,' said Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Airport Director, NSCBI Airport. Demolition of the old domestic terminal is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. In its place, a new U-shaped terminal will come up, initially meant exclusively for international operations. Once operational, the new international terminal will add capacity for 2 million passengers annually. To address growing passenger traffic in the interim, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also planned an expansion of the existing terminal's international areas. The departure section will be expanded by 3,000 sq m, and the arrival section by 2,600 sq m. This 71,000 sq ft modular addition will increase total capacity from 26 million to 28 million passengers per annum (2.8 crore), with completion targeted for the end of this year. Sources at the airport said that after the new international terminal becomes operational, the existing integrated terminal, 222,973 sq m in size, will be converted for exclusive domestic use with a revised handling capacity of 34 million passengers annually. The old domestic terminal, built in 1995 with a capacity of 5 million passengers annually and a built-up area of 2.4 lakh sq ft, has remained unused for regular operations since the current integrated terminal opened in 2013. However, the building continued to serve key functions. During the pandemic, it housed a quarantine facility and later operated an RT-PCR testing centre for international travellers (2020–22). It has also been used for Haj flight operations. 'Upon full completion of these projects, NSCBI Airport's total annual passenger handling capacity — combining both the converted domestic terminal and the new international terminal — is projected to reach 45 million. Of this, 36 million will be for domestic passengers and 9 million for international,' an airport official said. Officials said this expansion will help future-proof the airport against rising passenger demand in the coming decades and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub in the region. Epoxy flooring facelift for airport

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Kolkata airport on Thursday unveiled a glitzy epoxy flooring near gate 25 at the northern-end of the departure terminal's security hold area (SHA), replacing the dull, worn-out dark grey and blue carpets with a white, yellow, and grey floor that added a dash of cheer to the terminal's look and feel. Over the next few months, carpets at the other boarding gates will be removed, and the epoxy flooring will be extended to the other end of the SHA. The cost of the floor facelift is Rs 7 crore. The carpets are now laid across 43,000 sq ft of floor near boarding gates that lead to 18 aerobridges in the facility. In use since the terminal's launch on Jan 23, 2013, the carpets long outlived their utility and were in crying need of an upgrade. Nearly 10 crore flyers who took flights out of the airport in past 11 years walked over this carpeted section, causing them to get frayed. They also gathered dust and stains from constant use. "It has not only enhanced aesthetics of the terminal, it will be more durable, easy to maintain, chemical resistant and cost-effective," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. Kol airport flags off DigiYatra for transit flyers

1 2 Kolkata: Some passengers, transiting Kolkata airport on Thursday, had a smoother experience with the commissioning of DigiYatra services in the domestic-to-domestic (D2D) transfer area. The facility can make a big difference to more than 3,500 flyers who travel between the Northeast and other Indian cities via Kolkata airport daily. Passengers who have the DigiYatra app on their cellphones and have their boarding passes uploaded on it will be able to skip the queue at the D2D gate. "The move will ease congestion and expedite security procedures for more than 3,500-4,000 daily flyers who use the D2D facility, many of whom travel to and from the Northeast. The tech upgrade will especially help passengers racing to catch connecting flights," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. The gates were installed in March, but the commissioning was delayed due to regulatory clearances. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata The rollout is expected to significantly boost DigiYatra usage, which is currently around 7,000 or 28% of flyers departing Kolkata airport. Sources said around 500 transit flyers had DigiYatra apps on their mobiles. "We will deploy people to help others start using DigiYatra," an official said.
