Oman brings home over 1,300 citizens and expats
Oman has evacuated over 1,188 citizens and 281 other nationals from Iran and its neighbouring countries as part of its humanitarian assistance. On Saturday, 294 Omani citizens landed at Muscat International Airport via Türkiye, along with people from other countries, during the fifth phase of evacuation.
The Foreign Ministry thanked all officials, especially those from Türkiye, who contributed to the smooth transfer of people.
Speaking to the Observer, Ahmed al Hooti, a journalist with Al Jazeera who was in the fourth phase of evacuation, said that there were hundreds of Omanis in Iranian cities who were tourists, students, medical patients, pilgrims and the efforts of Oman's Foreign Ministry and its embassies in safeguarding the citizens as well as other nationals were laudable.
'The Oman embassy in Iran reached out to Omanis scattered across the country and asked to share their details through social media. They were advised to be prepared to move to the northern side of Iran and everyone did the same. Some were in Mashhad and they continued to stay there only till they got the information on where to move. After 3 days, hundreds of Omanis left Tehran to other cities where the embassy officials were doing documentation and preparation to leave the country through land borders,' said Al Hooti.
'There were no flights hence some people used cars and people like me used taxis. Others used buses which were all arranged by the embassy. The embassy in Tehran did a wonderful job in moving all Omanis to safe places and later they were transferred from borders where they were able to get flights. Also the Omani embassy in Baghdad too did a great job in supporting the stranded Omanis.'
Mohammed Rafiq, Mohammed Shafiq, Nourin and Sophia, from India's Kerala state, who had arrived in Iran on a tourist visa, arrived at the Muscat International Airport from Iran via Basra, Iraq on Thursday. The group returned to Oman after receiving Iraqi visas following high-level intervention from the Oman government.
"We could see huge columns of smoke and fire billowing out of buildings nearby where we were staying. People were being evacuated from everywhere. When we contacted the Indian Embassy in Iran, the result was disappointing as they told us to follow online updates and to contact them after the weekend," Rafiq said.
"However, the Omanis who were with us took us to the Oman Embassy in Tehran. Although they were not bound to board us, the kind-hearted officials as well as the co-passengers succeeded in accepting us as their own citizens. We were given temporary accommodation."
Rafiq said that the Omani authorities provided them with temporary facilities until Friday and Saturday; and then asked to approach the Indian Embassy.
"We contacted the Indian Embassy, but the response from there was not as expected. Thanks to an Omani citizen who was with us, the authorities again arranged travel facilities for us. With this, we were taken along with the Omanis to Basra in Iraq via Bandar Abbas."
The expat family said that they are deeply grateful to the Omanis and the officials of Oman who intervened in their case. — ONA

Oman Air set to join Oneworld Alliance today
Oman Air will join the Oneworld alliance on June 30, offering integration of loyalty programmes and IT systems, and bookings across partner airlines. Oman Air will integrate its Sindbad Gold and Silver programs with Oneworld's Saphaire and Ruby. Earlier speaking to the Observer, Con Korfiatis,CEO, Oman Air, said, 'Joining the Oneworld alliance significantly enhances our network footprint, through the alliance partnerships, because we'll never be the size of an airline where we fly to every point in the world. We will rely on partners to assist in offering a broader network to offer to our customer base. We already have some relationships with some of the Oneworld members, but it's going to be significantly expanded.' He added, 'Going back double daily into London in October will help in terms of opening up connectivity to North and South America as well, and again through our alliance partners.' According to the CEO, 'In terms of airlines flying into Muscat, that decision has to be made by them. But obviously through their distribution and our connectivity and the broader network, we are driving more passengers onto the aircraft, which allows us to grow as well, whether it's coming in on our partners' flights or it's coming in through us operating more flights and having more aircraft in time as well.' Korfiatis said, 'The new Dreamliner aircraft will be operated to Amsterdam from July 1. We will be looking at more aircraft in 2026-27 and are not worried about not having enough aircraft. If we've got the business and the traffic, the fulfilment of aircraft are not is not going to be a problem.' The airline will offer 15 or 16 percent more seats than last year to Salalah. Old Muscat airport to be turned into leisure hub
Muscat – Plans are taking shape to redevelop Muscat's former international airport into a vibrant aviation-themed destination, with proposals including an aviation museum, shopping centres, restaurants, and other leisure and commercial attractions. Naif bin Ali al Abri, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), revealed that several investment opportunities have been proposed to breathe new life into the historic site, once the primary hub for Oman Air. Speaking to media last week, Abri said the transformation aims to create an economically viable development that honours the airport's legacy in Oman's aviation journey. 'These proposals aim to turn the old airport into a dynamic destination while preserving its historical significance. Oman Airports is currently reviewing the submissions to deter-mine the most suitable and strategic options for implementation.' Highlighting the authority's achievements, Abri noted that 2024 was a strong year for Oman's aviation sector. CAA recorded revenues of RO105mn, reflecting operational efficiency and financial sustainability. There has been marked increase in air traffic with over 540,300 aircraft transiting through Omani airspace – a 14% in-crease compared to 2023. Passenger traffic grew 2% and more than 120,000 flights were recorded during the year. Air cargo volumes exceeded 150,000 tonnes underlining robust activity in the aviation sector. Abri further pointed out that in response to the recent regional crisis, Oman hosted numerous international flights, leading to a 28% increase in air traffic over a 12-day period. In a bid to support growth and enhance service quality, CAA issued new operating permits to 19 foreign airlines in 2024. Significant upgrades were also made to national aviation infrastructure, including installation of a new air navigation radar in Jalan Bani Bu Ali to bolster airspace surveillance. Operational manuals were implemented at both Duqm and Marmul airports, while aviation security and cybersecurity policies were ratified to ensure high safety standards. The national meteorological monitoring network expanded to 80 stations, reinforcing the sultanate's climate and weather forecasting capabilities. The authority addressed and resolved 520 customer complaints in 2024, showcasing its responsiveness and dedication to service excellence.
