Who is the NFL employee shot in NYC mass shooting? What we know so far.

USA Today5 days ago
It was a horrific scene in Manhattan on Monday night: A gunman walked into an office building in Midtown and opened fire, killing at least four people (including a police officer) and injuring others. Per authorities, he then killed himself.
The building was 345 Park Avenue, where NFL headquarters are located among other businesses. And it turns out that among the shooting victims was a league employee who was injured by the gunman, whose name was Shane Tamura.
Who was it? What do we know about all of this? Here's everything we know so far as this story continues to develop:
Who was the NFL employee who was shot by Shane Tamura?
The person has not been named. But in a memo from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that was sent, the person was "seriously injured" and is "currently in the hospital and in stable condition." He added that NFL staffers are at the hospital.
What else did Roger Goodell say about the Shane Tamura shooting?
Here's the entire memo:
Was Shane Tamura targeting the NFL specifically?
Per CNN:
Papers found on the shooter's body indicate he had grievances with the National Football League and its handling of CTE, a brain disease linked to head trauma, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told CNN.
What is CTE?
As USA TODAY Sports wrote in 2022:
CTE stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive degenerative brain disease, according to Boston University's CTE Research Center, which has led much of the research on the disease. The condition is caused by a history of repeated hits to the head and emerges months or even years after the head injuries were sustained, according to Boston University.

NYC shooting would never have happened if mental illness were handled properly

If New York is to be the stage for mad people to commit their spectacle acts of violence, then we need to talk seriously about mental-health reform. The Nevada gunman who opened fire in midtown Manhattan last week, killing a police officer and three others, should never have made it to New York. A competent mental-health system would have stopped him years ago and 2,000 miles away. The 27-year-old shooter had been hospitalized involuntarily twice in Nevada, first in 2022, at the age when serious mental illnesses tend to manifest, and again in 2024. In between those short-term holds, he had police encounters, including an arrest for criminal trespassing and exhibited troubling behavior like driving unregistered cars. Just a month before the shooting, in June, a tip was reportedly called in that he had bought excessive amounts of ammunition at a gun show and an aftermarket trigger, a gun piece designed to give a shooter better control and accuracy. In a rambling suicide note blaming the NFL, the shooter believed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, though reports of his history of any concussions are mixed. The NYPD found antipsychotic medication prescribed to him in his car. His violent behavior, which antipsychotics effectively reduce, suggests he hadn't been taking them. All this suggests a young man experiencing signs of early psychosis and who had deteriorated enough to draw the attention of government systems. As is all too typical with these cases, though, there appears to have been no supervision or oversight, no mandated treatment and no long-term hospitalization. The shooter's deterioration, from his first involuntary commitment to his purchase of ammunition and firearms, all happened in Nevada. So did his release — twice — from holds that should have promoted more sustained interventions. Nevada ranks 43rd in the nation for inpatient psychiatric bed capacity. With so few beds, hospitals can only admit so many patients, which means some patients won't be committed, even when that's precisely what they and the community need. Short-term stays of 72 hours or less fix little. They don't set up a care structure around a person to facilitate stability. Upon discharge, there's no guarantee of treatment compliance, especially in a state where court-ordered outpatient care is rarely used. Some have asked how the shooter, with a mental-health history, was able to get hold of a gun. But gun laws are only as good as the mental-health records that inform them. And if a mental-health system fails to intervene forcefully enough, scant service records will ever be generated. A mass shooting requires a greater degree of organization than a subway pushing. But like the subway violence New Yorkers have become tragically accustomed to, the Midtown shooter's victims were strangers to him, and he was known to the system, which failed him and the public. Those mental-health systems failures were Nevada's, not New York's. But the shooting tragedy provides lessons relevant to the debate here. First, untreated serious mental illness, though more visible in New York City, is a national problem. If New York continues to strike the fancy of ambitious murderers looking for the largest stage on which to perpetuate their atrocities, New York has a uniquely large stake in national mental-health reform. President Donald Trump's recent executive order on homelessness called for more use of civil commitment nationwide. Progressives blanch at that, but it's what will be needed if we're to make headway in reducing mental illness-related violence. Second, in the case of most such violence, the problem isn't stigma or insufficient public empathy for the mentally disabled. It's insufficient engagement with those who are most sick and most at risk, many of whom don't believe they are sick at all. Third, while asking mental-health systems to stop all violence somehow related to untreated psychosis is unrealistic, asking them to help reduce the risk is, or should be, a core responsibility. But systems tend to go about that task in completely the wrong way. Too many taxpayer-funded mental-health programs claim to prevent mental illness but do so by conducting mass screenings of the population for general distress. Examples include Mental Health First Aid and school-based programs, which have expanded dramatically since COVID. When everyone is marked for concern, the system floods with noise, making true signals of danger harder to recognize. A more effective mental-health system would be both smaller and larger than the one we have now. It would be more ambitious and certainly involve the robust participation of the national government. But it would be more focused on the hardest cases. Stephen Eide is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal. Carolyn D. Fundraiser to fulfill tragic security guard's ‘wish' for his kids after he's killed in NYC mass shooting

A fundraiser for the children of security guard gunned down in last week's mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan has topped $60,000 — as kin hailed him as 'a pillar of strength' for his family. After blacks in Cincinnati beat white adults, why was there no nationwide, racial outrage?

Recently, a large group of black youths began pummeling white adults in downtown Cincinnati. The original altercation apparently broke out between a black and white male in he-said/he-said fashion. But that dispute soon turned into a virtual free-for-all. Numerous male and female black youths sucker-punched a middle-aged woman. Others continued to kick or body slam the victims. There were many disturbing aspects to the beat-downs. One, the violence broke out along racial and age fault lines. After the initial dispute, groups of black youths swarmed solitary older white bystanders to pound them. Two, the surrounding assembled group of black youths not only failed to intervene to restrain the bullies. They also recorded the beatings for social media and were heard cheering on the one-sided violence. Three, there was neither a police presence nor any timely Good Samaritan interventions. Four, oddly few of the usual black spokespeople who habitually comment on interracial violence were to be seen. During the fake Jussie Smollett attack, self-appointed leaders from Al Sharpton to Kamala Harris immediately issued warnings about so-called systemic white racism that had reared its ugly head to victimize Smollett. Yet when it was revealed Smollett had concocted the entire charade — and even hired his own assaulters — there were few if any retractions from those once so eager to shout 'racist!' Such demagoguery is a well-known pattern dating back to the days of the Tawana Brawley rape hoax, the Duke Lacrosse charade, the Covington kids ruse, the Michael Ford 'Hands-up-Don't Shoot' fabrication or the NASCAR noose fable. Racialists too often concoct white racist attackers and go silent when the evidence proves fabricated — only to be primed to manipulate the next hoax. Five, the media and authorities did their best to either hide or play down the violence. City leaders, the chief of police and the media variously blamed the mass black-on-white violence on 1) social media, 2) the original dispute, 3) alcohol, 4) the lack of civilian intervention to stop the violence and 5) a festival atmosphere — anything except endemic racial hatred shown toward whites from the crowd of black youths. Six, had a gang of white toughs beat middle-aged African-Americans senseless, recorded it and cheered on the violence, there would have been immediate national outrage. Nor did anyone wish to raise the taboo topic of inordinate black crime rates, disproportionate to respective demographic realities. In rare interracial violent crimes, the asymmetrical ratio of black-on-white versus white-on-black assaults ranges from three to five times greater. Seven, the quiet of the left-wing media to the reprehensible violence stands in marked contrast with their usual rush-to-judgment racialism in two near-simultaneous incidents. When a shooter entered a New York City corporate headquarters last week and executed four innocents, CNN falsely raised the speculation that a 'white male' was perhaps responsible — despite the photograph of the suspect, who was as clearly male as he was not white. Media and municipal officials jumped to explain the violence as due to the killer's alleged past traumatic brain injury or because of his access to a semi-automatic weapon — or anything other than his hate-filled plan to murder an NFL executive. The left then exploded, alleging the ad was a supposed Hitlerian reference to white eugenics. Yet the eugenics movement in America was mostly a product of left-wing progressives, from Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger to Democratic President Woodrow Wilson. And the ad's sponsor, American Eagle, had previously used all sorts of models from all racial backgrounds. All might agree that the ad simply shows both tight, sexy jeans and a naturally attractive wearer — period. The country is descending into a tribal morass of double standards and racial fixations. The diversity/equity/inclusion industry, the defund-the-police madness and the perpetual left-wing hunt for 'white racism/white privilege/white rage' — from the prior Pentagon hierarchy to the lunatic fringe of Jasmine Crockett, Joy Reid and Zohran Mamdani — have all legitimized double standards while lowering the bar of the once unacceptable. When our careerist left-wing elites seek to divide us by race and make it essential, not incidental, to our identities, that tribalist message filters throughout communities. The ensuing signal is that 'payback' violence is OK — on the expectation that there are no consequences for interracial violence — as long as the victim is white and the assaulter is not.
