Vaigaichelvan claims DMK's front has suffered a ‘dent'
The AIADMK's spokesperson and former Minister Vaigaichelvan on Wednesday claimed the ruling DMK-led front had suffered a 'dent.'
In an interaction with the media in Kancheepuram, Mr Vaigaichelvan, who recently met Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan in Tiruchi, said that 'this is the first stage. You will see subsequent stages.' However, he refused to elaborate his main point.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced the expulsion of the party councillor, secretary of the Thoothukudi (south) area and and former Minister S.P. Shanmuganathan's son S. P.S. Raja from the organisation. Mr Raja was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case of allegedly cheating his sister to the tune of ₹17 crore.

Silt removal will be completed soon: Narayana
Nellore: Claiming that his government is giving top priority for drinking water, garbage cleaning and silt removal in municipalities, MA&UD Minister Ponguru Narayana has said that pending works of silt removal in irrigation canals and drains will be completed in the next two months across the State, in view of the ensuing rainy season in October and November. The Minister along with Nellore Municipal Commissioner YO Nandan and sanitary department officials, inspected the ongoing silt removal works in Pogathota area of 45th division in Nellore city on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was decided to complete the pending silt removal works in a time-bound manner to avoid people from facing inundation problem during rainy season. Alleging that the previous YSRCP government diverted Rs 3,000 crore funds related to municipalities to other purposes, but the TDP-led coalition government is giving top priority for addressing drinking water problem, garbage cleaning, and silt removal in all urban areas in the State. Narayana has disclosed that silt removal works were taken up in 45 canals extended for 6.5 km in Nellore city and works are under progress.

Andhra Pradesh govt may refund ₹2,500 crore as HC strikes down hike in industrial power duty
The cash-strapped N Chandrababu Naidu government may have to foot a bill of about ₹2,500 crore as the Andhra Pradesh High Court has struck down an electricity duty levied on industrial and commercial establishments by the previous YSRCP government . The issue pertains to a duty levied on the sale of each unit of electricity. Under the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Duty (Amendment) Act, 1994, the state had levied 6 paise per unit of "electricity duty" on all consumers, except on power sold to the Centre and the railways. In 2022, the then Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government increased this levy to ₹1 for industrial and commercial users through a government order. Andhra Pradesh's textile and ferro alloys industries challenged this order in the court, terming it "discriminatory" to industry as these two industries are heavy consumers of power, which accounts for 50 per cent of their input costs. A bench of Andhra Pradesh chief justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and justice R Raghunandan Rao on Friday scrapped the government order through which electricity duty was enhanced. The order reads: "GOMs No 7, dated 08.04.2022 is struck down. However, the government is entitled to collect duty at the rate of 6 paise per unit, throughout the period from the date when Act of 2021 was published in the Gazette till such time as the rate of duty is modified, in accordance with law." Since the government order has been struck down, it will need to refund 94 paise per unit collected in excess from industrial and commercial consumers. A government source, who did not wish to be identified, told ET: "Industrial consumption of electricity is about 1,539 crore units per year. We will be calculating the dues per user. It will be about ₹2,500 crore." The government is weighing options, including appealing in the Supreme Court and adjusting future bills of consumers. Sri Anantha Laxmi Spinning Mills executive director Paani Kumar Samineni told ET: "The government collected 94 paise excess electricity duty for 18 months till different associations got a stay order from court. This order will help consumers in recovering these dues running into hundreds of crores." The enhanced duty was collected till October 2023.

AAP protests DDA demolition drive
New Delhi: The ongoing demolition of slum clusters by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has sparked political outrage across the capital, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staging a fierce protest outside the office of Union Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Rajouri Garden on Monday. The protest, led by senior AAP leader Sanjeev Jha, accused the government of targeting poor and working-class communities under the guise of development. AAP demanded Sirsa's removal from the Cabinet over alleged 'derogatory' remarks. AAP said Sirsa's alleged 'derogatory' remarks targeted slum dwellers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Sharing videos of the protest on X, AAP wrote, 'The BJP has been calling brothers and sisters of Purvanchal Bangladeshi Rohingyas. Now, Minister Sirsa once again made a hateful statement against Purvanchalis. Today, AAP leaders, workers, and the Purvanchal community surrounded his residence in protest.' Terming the bulldozer action as an 'anti-poor policy,' AAP leaders slammed the BJP-led administration for uprooting families who have lived in Delhi's slums for years. 'These are hardworking citizens who form the backbone of the city, and they are being punished for their poverty,' said Sanjeev Jha, addressing the crowd. The protest took on a more regional tone as AAP leaders alleged discrimination against people from Purvanchal,a large migrant population in Delhi. 'The BJP government is deliberately targeting Purvanchali residents and rendering them homeless. Wherever Manjinder Singh Sirsa goes, he will face the anger of the people,' Jha declared, accusing the BJP of betraying those it had wooed during elections. Residents also voiced their frustration, accusing the government of playing with their trust. 'During elections, everything in our slum was fine. Leaders came, made promises, and asked for our votes. Now they say our homes are illegal?' said one of the displaced residents. 'This is betrayal.' Tensions escalated further as AAP warned that if the demolition drive continued without a proper rehabilitation plan, the protests could intensify. 'If the government keeps ignoring the plight of the poor, this movement will not remain peaceful for long,' party leaders cautioned. Amid the heated atmosphere, security was tightened around Sirsa's office. A heavy police presence was deployed to prevent any untoward incident, and no one was allowed entry into the premises during the demonstration.
