Probe sought into dalit man's death in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Three days after a dalit man was found hanging from a tree with both hands tied with a rope at Sennakkalpalayam near Dharapuram, dalit organisations on Sunday condemned police for dismissing it as a suicide case and urged the district superintendent of police to conduct a fair probe into his death. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now K Murugan, 42, a daily wage labourer from Sennakkalpalayam, was found hanging from a tree in the locality on Thursday (June 26). When alerted, the Alangiyam police sent the body to the govt hospital at Dharapuram for postmortem. The body was handed over to his family members the next day, when it was cremated. Senior police officers said the postmortem findings did not indicate any sign of external force in Murugan's death. His family members also did not raise any suspicion over the death. Police subsequently registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Dalit activists, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Tamil Puligal Katchi and other dalit organisations on Sunday alleged foul play behind Murugan's death. They accused police of not conducting a proper investigation and forcing the family to cremate the body in haste. V Govindaraj of Vizhuthugal, an organisation working for the welfare of people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, said there was foul play behind Murugan's death. "We are planning to petition the district collector, seeking a proper inquiry into Murugan's death."

We are worried AIADMK is making a historic mistake: Thirumavalavan

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Tuesday expressed concern over the political course the AIADMK has taken. 'We are worried that AIADMK is making a historic mistake. We will not allow them (Hindutva forces) to poison this land. Many are trying to divert Tamil Nadu towards Hindutva politics. Many who speak fake Tamil nationalism also are speaking in the same tone. We should not give space for that,' he said in Chennai. The VCK leader feared the AIADMK cadres are being turned into RSS activists. His remarks came against the backdrop of the recent Murugan Devotees conference held by the Hindu Munnani in Madurai in which AIADMK leaders had also participated. Participating at a function organised by his party to bestow awards on various personalities, he said B. R. Ambedkar was instrumental in ensuring that Hinduism, 'which does not foster brotherhood within', was not declared as the State religion in India. Mr. Thirumavalavan asked if those accusing him of erasing 'sacred ash' on his forehead were ready to protest in favour of Scheduled Castes who are not being allowed inside temple (Droupathi Amman temple) in Melpathi in Villupuram. 'I accepted sacred ash because it was offered. Can I sport it always? I didn't accept it because I would get good Karma nor did I want to insult the gesture,' he said. Mr. Thirumavalavan said, 'I am not asking you to accept me as your just accept me as your brother.' 'Tamil land has five types of landscape and Murugan, who hails from Kurinji is the leader. He was born like us, lived like us and ruled the people. We have literature to support this. But he has been turned into 'Subramanian'. No Brahmin will name their children as Murugan - they will name them Subramanian or Skandan. Murugan from Sangam literature is different from the mythology,' he contended. Mr. Thirumavalavan said, 'How can I sit and watch as the follower of Dr. Ambedkar and Periyar (E V Ramasamy) when our identity and history is stolen and new stories and identity are created to discriminate and divide us? We haven't started a party just to go to and State assembly.' Dr. K. S. Chalam, former VC, Dravidian University (Ambedkar Sudar awardee), actor Sathyaraj (Periyar Oli), Thozhar Thiyagu (Marx Mamani), Dr. Pa. Jambulingam (Iyotheethasar Adhavan), V. Vaithilingam former CM, Puducherry (Kamarajar Kathir), Tamil scholar Prof. A. Shanmugadas (Semmozhi Gnayiru), P.A. Kaja Moinudeen Bagavi (Quaid-E-Millath Pirai) received awards.

Teen ends life after teachers allegedly scolded him for not doing homework

A 15-year-old boy ended his life in his home near Tiruchendur on Monday night after his teachers allegedly scolded him for not doing his homework. Police said M. Muthukrishnan, 15, of Paramankurichi Samaththuvapuram was studying in Class X of a government-aided high school in the same area. He ended his life in his home on Monday night. His parents alleged that their son's teachers scolded him with cane for not doing the homework and hence he had ended his life. On getting information, Tiruchendur Taluk police rushed to the house of Muthukrishnan and sent the body to Tiruchendur Government Hospital for a post-mortem. The police also reportedly recovered a 'suicide note' from the shirt of the boy in which he had allegedly accused the headmistress and three teachers of the school responsible for him taking the extreme step. As the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi cadres, who gathered at Tiruchendur Revenue Divisional Officer's Office on Tuesday evening, demanded registration of cases against the teachers and the headmistress under the SC/ST Act, RDO Sukumar and Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Kumar held talks with them. When the officers told them that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of ongoing investigation, they refused to accept it saying that they would not receive the body until cases were not registered against the teachers and due compensation was given to the family of Muthukrishnan. Ramadoss should reject BJP and ‘politics of hate', promote peace between the Vanniyars and the Dalits, says VCK MP

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi general secretary and Villupuram MP D. Ravikumar has urged PMK founder S. Ramadoss to reject the BJP and the 'politics of hate' to protect peace and promote development in northern districts of Tamil Nadu, where the Vanniyars and the Scheduled Castes live in large numbers. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Ravikumar said his appeal to Dr. Ramadoss — which came after the PMK founder spoke fondly of VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan in an interview — was born out of the concern that Dr. Ramadoss and the PMK should not 'inadvertently' aid the growth of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. 'The Vanniyars and the Scheduled Castes are two largest communities in the northern districts. If Dr. Ramadoss rejects the BJP, the national party would find it impossible to form a government in the State. It cannot win [in elections] without taking root in the northern districts,' he said. While Mr. Thirumavalavan had repeatedly rejected any alliance with the PMK or the BJP, Mr. Ravikumar said his appeal to Dr. Ramadoss should not be seen in the context of the 2026 Assembly election, but in the larger context of ensuring peace and calm in society. Mr. Ravikumar said Dr. Ramadoss's rejection of hate politics against the Scheduled Castes would pave the way for fraternity and peace among the Vanniyars and the Scheduled Castes in the villages. 'If the PMK ends the politics of hate against the Scheduled Castes, the atrocities against the Scheduled Castes will come down. Those who cause trouble to the Scheduled Castes in villages do so because of the shade of protection given by the PMK,' he said. 'Even in the Melpathi temple issue, it was the PMK's advocate, K. Balu, who spoke in support of the social exclusion of the Scheduled Castes from the temple. If the PMK lets go of this kind of politics, the atrocities will come down automatically,' he felt. The Villupuram MP added that the 'Vanniyar community has a proud history of playing a leading role in progressive politics in the State — it has been an important part of the Dravidian Movement and the Left politics. The Vanniyars do not harbour as much hate against the Scheduled Castes as other communities in the southern districts. If Dr. Ramadoss softens his stance, the Scheduled Castes in the northern districts can rest easy, and this will result in the overall development of the region.'

Vaigaichelvan claims DMK's front has suffered a ‘dent'

The AIADMK's spokesperson and former Minister Vaigaichelvan on Wednesday claimed the ruling DMK-led front had suffered a 'dent.' In an interaction with the media in Kancheepuram, Mr Vaigaichelvan, who recently met Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan in Tiruchi, said that 'this is the first stage. You will see subsequent stages.' However, he refused to elaborate his main point. Meanwhile, the AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced the expulsion of the party councillor, secretary of the Thoothukudi (south) area and and former Minister S.P. Shanmuganathan's son S. P.S. Raja from the organisation. Mr Raja was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case of allegedly cheating his sister to the tune of ₹17 crore.
