A new era of Indian Test cricket began with poise and purpose on Friday as Shubman Gill's India stamped their authority on the opening day of the first Test against England at Headingley in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy.
Sent in to bat after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss, India overcame early challenges to finish the day at a commanding 359/3 - their highest-ever Day 1 total in a Test in England.
Scaorecard:
India vs England, 1st Test Day 1
Skipper Gill led from the front with an unbeaten 127, becoming only the fourth Indian to score a century in his maiden innings as Test captain, emulating legends like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. Yashasvi Jaiswal's sublime 101 and a composed unbeaten 65 from vice-captain Rishabh Pant added to India's dominance.
Their combined efforts have put India firmly in control, making a bold statement in their first Test since the retirements of stalwarts Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin.

Debut disappointment for Sai Sudharsan
Much was expected from debutant Sai Sudharsan, but the 23-year-old endured a harsh introduction to Test cricket. Handed cap No. 317 by Cheteshwar Pujara, Sudharsan came in at No. 3 but was dismissed for a duck after just four balls — becoming the first Indian debutant since 2011 to suffer such a fate.

His nervous stay ended when Ben Stokes, attacking with discipline, found the edge through to the keeper.
The early dismissal slightly dented India's promising 91-run opening stand between KL Rahul (42) and Yashasvi Jaiswal. India went into lunch at 92/2, with questions looming about their new-look middle order.

Yashasvi Jaiswal continues dream run
Yashasvi Jaiswal once again proved why he is India's most exciting red-ball batting prospect. The 23-year-old left-hander struck his fifth Test century — and third against England — to continue his remarkable trend of scoring hundreds in the opening Test of every overseas series he's played.
Jaiswal's 101 off 159 balls featured 16 fours and a six. His innings was a fine blend of restraint and aggression, beginning with a fluent drive off Woakes and building into a commanding knock that blunted England's bowling attack. Notably, he added 129 runs with Gill for the third wicket, a partnership that pulled India away from early trouble and toward a position of dominance.
Captain Gill matches Kohli's feat with commanding century
In his first outing as Test captain, Shubman Gill showed exactly why he's been trusted to lead India into a new era.
Calm under pressure, the 25-year-old constructed a majestic innings, reaching his sixth Test century and his third against England.
His unbeaten 127 off 175 balls was a masterclass in timing, intent, and authority. He reached his fifty off just 56 balls — his fastest in Tests — and didn't let up. With 14 crisp boundaries, Gill joined Hazare, Gavaskar, and Kohli as the only Indians to score a century in their first innings as Test captain.
At 25 years and 285 days, he also became the youngest Indian skipper to record a fifty on captaincy debut. His composure, combined with tactical clarity, suggests India's transition may be in safe hands.
Pant adds spark, India finish Day 1 at 359/3
R
ishabh Pant added the late flourish, accelerating after Jaiswal's dismissal to notch up a confident 65* off 102 balls. The Gill-Pant stand remains unbroken at stumps, already worth 138 runs for the fourth wicket.
England's bowlers, barring Ben Stokes (2/43), struggled to extract much from the surface. Brydon Carse took the only other wicket, while the rest of the attack looked toothless against India's batting discipline.
India's 359/3 is their highest Day 1 total in England, surpassing the 338/7 scored at Edgbaston in 2022. It's also the highest Day 1 score by any visiting team in England since 2003, when South Africa posted 362/4 at The Oval.

"He's just the ultimate football player": Arch Manning impressed with NFL star Josh Allen, calling him one of his 'must-watches'

Arch Manning (via Getty Images) Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning is not only generating buzz with his on-field play, but also with how he prepares off of it. Talking at the iconic Manning Passing Academy last weekend, the 2026 NFL Draft prospect unveiled he's been studying film from among the league's elite. At the top of that list? Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Texas QB Arch Manning names Josh Allen his top inspiration at the Manning Passing Academy The NFL MVP has another fan, and this time it comes in the form of someone whose last name holds major football clout. "He's just the ultimate football player," Arch Manning said about Josh Allen. "If something's not there, he's going to make something happen and do whatever he can to make his team win." Josh Allen's journey wasn't typical—throwing 49% in college and being taken as the third QB in the 2018 draft—but his ascent to MVP status provides a roadmap for growth and resilience. And Arch Manning is paying attention. Arch Manning says he's studying Josh Allen, Joe Burrow to improve his own game "I'm watching a lot of Josh Allen and Joe Burrow right now. Those are my guys," Arch Manning added. "They're dogs. I've watched some of their college film. They're just good players, elite competitors, and fun to watch." Though Burrow was also complimented, it was evident that Allen left a lasting impression on the 20-year-old sensation. Arch Manning is more than just any quarterback prospect—he's the fourth generation of an NFL dynasty. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The all new SP125 that comes with advance technology & features Honda Learn More Undo In the footsteps of his grandfather Archie (1971 No. 2 pick) and uncles Peyton (1998 No. 1) and Eli Manning (2004 No. 1), Arch is about to put his stamp on the game. However, it's players such as Allen—rather than family connection—who are assisting in developing his style. This newfound respect is ringing true with fans on both coasts: Bills Mafia, ever more passionate when Allen receives his due, and Longhorn Nation, hungry to see their phenom take on a warrior's mindset as he heads into the 2025 college season. With Allen in his prime and Manning on the threshold of his own NFL career, the cross-generational dynamic is strong. Manning's admiration says something significant about Allen's impact, not merely as a stat-gathering quarterback, but as a leader who commands future stars. US Open: Ayush Shetty clinches maiden BWF World Tour title, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma finishes runner-up at Super 300

Ayush Shetty and Tanvi Sharma in action at the US Open (Image credits - PTI) India's title drought on the BWF World Tour came to an end on Sunday as Ayush Shetty delivered a commanding performance to lift his maiden title at the US Open Super 300. The 20-year-old from Mangalore outclassed third seed Brian Yang of Canada 21-18, 21-13 in the men's singles final, while teenager Tanvi Sharma's exciting run to the final ended in a defeat to Beiwen Zhang of the United States. Shetty, a bronze medallist at the 2023 Junior World Championships, capped off a stellar week that included a gritty comeback against top seed Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals. The Indian, seeded fourth, showed poise and precision in the final, securing victory in just 47 minutes for his third career win over Yang, having also beaten him earlier this year at the Malaysia and Taipei Opens. The contest began evenly with both players locked at 6-all, but Shetty pulled ahead with a string of winners to lead 11-6 at the mid-game interval. Though Yang rallied to level the score at 16-16, Shetty regained control with a series of smart placements and closed the first game with a decisive jump smash. In the second game, Shetty raced to a 7-2 advantage, and while Yang momentarily threatened a comeback, the Indian maintained his rhythm. Leading 17-12, Shetty sealed the win with a crisp cross-court punch and a powerful smash—securing a title that had eluded him in previous finals at the 2023 Odisha Masters, 2023 Bahrain International, and 2024 Dutch Open. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 기부반지 구매하고 함께하는 선한 영향력 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo Tanvi Sharma at the 2025 US Open Meanwhile, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma impressed onlookers with her resilience in her first BWF World Tour final, taking a game off top-seeded Beiwen Zhang of the USA before falling 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in a 46-minute battle.
